Table ED 8 Hyd - 01
Proper evaluation of trench flow capacity must take finished grade site slope into consideration. Site slope parallel to trench slope may have a positive or negative effect on trench flow capacity. Regardless, it is important to evaluate its effect to assure either an adequate trench depth and slope is being installed or just to maximize efficiency and cost of the installed trench as it relates to the desired design flow parameters.
Trench flow capacity shown in the accompanying table and graphs is determined by applying Mannings Equation for the standard EconoDrain trench slope of 0.5% and surface roughness coefficient of 0.013. The trench section outlet end area is utilized in the equation and the area occupied by the grating or cover is excluded.
Application of the Slope Adjustment Factor, Fk is applied according to Equation A: Where: Q Fk Ss St equals trench flow in gallons per minute (gpm) is the slope adjustment factor from the system Trench Flow Capacity table is the site slope, feet per feet (dimensionless) is the trench slope, feet per feet (dimensionless)
(equation A)
Example 1
A standard EconoDrain # 8 trench is to be installed in a concrete slab with an additional 0.2% slope parallel and in the diection of trench flow. The trench length is 40 feet and will traverse the full length of the concrete slab. The desired design flow capacity at the end of the trench is 900 gpm. Determine the proper trench size for the given conditions.
Trench sectiin 0820 has a trench flow of 894 gpm (1.99 cfs) per Table ED 8 HYD-01. Five trench sections will be required to fulfill the 40' trench length requirement.
Test the capacity of Trench section 0820 by applying the Slope Adjustment Factor, F k:
Fk from the Trench Flow Capacity Table ED 8 HYD-01 for section 0820 is: 12,636 NOTE: gallons per minute (gpm) is converted to cubic feet per second (cfs) by dividing the gpm result by 448.831.
St = 0.005 Ss = 0.002
The results yield a 17.4% flow capacity increase due to additional site slop.
Now, test a section having a flow capacity of approximately 747 gpm or about 83% of the targeted flow of 900 gpm.
Section 0817 trench flow capacity is given on Table ED 8 Hyd-01 as 753 gpm. Determine the value for Fk from the same table.
Trench Section 0817 falls short of the targeted flow criteria of 900 gpm. Try to get closer to the target flow by testing section 0818.
This test indicates Trench Section 0818 can be utilized to attain a minimum flow capacity of at least 900 gpm.
Therefore Trench Sections 0814 to 0818 will be used to form the 40 lineal foot trench drain. The overall trench depth will be from 10 in. to 12.5 in. Trench discharge flow will be 945 gpm. The trench flow can be expressed in cubic feet per second (cfs) by multiplying the flow expressed in gpm by the multiplier 0.002228. Therefore 945 gpm is equivalent to 2.1 cfs.
