This is a true story about a young
widow, poor and outcast, who
experienced real love and evolved
from a beggar to a bride. It can also be your story…
It’s hard to grasp the depth of meaning tucked
away in just four, short chapters, yet the book of
Ruth has been described as the Crown Jewel of
the Old Testament. Certainly, it has historic
significance, being that David was Ruth’s great-
great grandson. Yes, it’s also a love story
unparalleled by any modern day high definition
movie. But as I read and meditated upon it, a
much more personal message came to my
understanding. This book is about you. This
book is about me.
The book of Ruth is a love story. First,
between a bitter mother-in-law and her
courageous daughter-in-law. Both lived under
the devastating loss experienced by widowhood.
When Naomi decided to travel fifty miles back
to her hometown, Ruth displayed a loyalty too
strong to break. She left her own family,
country and gods forever.
Upon arrival at Bethlehem, it’s quite obvious
that she’s different from them. They are Jews
and she is, well, an outcast; a Moabite.
Nevertheless, her love for Naomi and desperate
need for food found her gleaning barley in a
field. The owner noticed her. He asked the
workers about her and learned that she’s related
to one of his relatives – Naomi.
The next three events were very important for
Ruth and will be for you, too. Ruth means
“friendship” and the progression of this friend-
ship represented something life-changing.
1) Ruth meets Boaz.
2) Boaz invites her to eat.
3) Boaz and Ruth marry.
Remember that. Meet, eat, marry. Ruth went
from being a beggar to a beauty to a bride and
