It was great to see all of the smiling faces back to school after March Break. I hope that all families enjoy the Easter weekend.

Over the past five years, the Upper Canada District School Boards Champions for Kids Foundation has distributed more than $600 000 to families in need across Eastern Ontario. Here at Arklan, we have accessed money from this fund to help many of our kids join things like soccer, hockey, music lessons, Cubs and Girl Guide groups as well as help pay for medical things like glasses and hearing tests. This year Champions for Kids will be hosting a lottery consisting of three sizable prizes; a 2013 Jeep Wrangler, a Disney trip for 4 and a large screen T.V. ple of students from Colombia for five weeks. The two girls had never seen snow before, but when I spoke to them at the end of last week they are looking forward to warmer weather already (just like the rest of us). This is the second opportunity for us to learn about the South American country as Arklan hosted five students before Christmas. Welcome girls and we hope you continue to enjoy your stay!

Its an exciting time for children beginning Kindergarten this September, as well as their parents! In order to make this a positive experience for your family, we would like to extend an invitation for you and your Kindergarten child to visit us later in the spring. On Wednesday May 8, from 6:30 to 7:30 PM Arklan School will be hosting a Welcome to Kindergarten evening, beginning in the library and moving into the kindergarten rooms. If you havent already done so, please pre-register your child online at www.ucdsb.on.ca.

Your childs safety is top priority!! According to the Boards Safe Arrival Policy, it is the duty of parents or guardians to report their childs absence by calling the school, sending a note in advance (when the reason is know ahead of time), or sending a note with a sibling. Also, please provide current and suitable contact telephone numbers and update them promptly if they change. Thank you for your assistance.

Field trips are already in the works! This is just a reminder that any parent/guardian who is interested in volunteering on a field trip (or in the school) is required to have a current (less than 1 year old) Police Record Check on file at the school. The forms are available at the school office and are to be submitted to the OPP station to be processed. Any parent who already has a current Criminal Reference Check on file at the office, may extend the duration of time that it is valid, by signing an Offence Declaration form. These forms are also available at the office and do not need to be handed in to the OPP station.

As we participate every year, once again Arklan students will take part in Pitch-In Community Clean Up Week coordinated by the Carleton Place Business Improvement Association. This event takes place during the week of April 21-27. Every student, along with their teacher, will participate sometime during the week, by cleaning up their own yard, as well as the areas surrounding Arklan School. Its just another way that Arklan students show their community spirit!
