How can your environments impact who you are and the choices you make? Pick one of the following scenes from the play. Think about how the situation affected the Monster. Think about how if the scene unfolded differently, the Monster may have changed. Rewrite one of the following to show how they would have impacted the Monster and his choices in life if the situation had been different. 1. 2. 3. 4. When Frankenstein sees the monster for the first time and his reaction is to run away When the monster is in a town, where dogs and towns people are after him When Felix shoots the monster When the monster kills William

Rewriting Frankenstein

Your scene should have between 2-4 characters. 1 or 2 of these characters may be your own characters (not from the play). Your scene will have two parts: 1. What happens to the monster (the situation) 2. His choices as a result (the impact) Which scene will you rewrite? What is the situation in the scene? What do others do to the Monster? When the weary monster begins to explore the small cottage near the monsters hovel, he realizes that it belongs to Felix, whom is a young man that lives with his sister, Agathe. During the monsters observing of the home, he begins to watch Agathe on his own whilst Felix is gone out hutting and later on startles and petrifies her when he begins to talk to her as she became conscious that hes there. When Felix comes back, he judges the monster by his looks (in which he does look vile) and therefore presumes that he is attacking Agathe and apparently she is struggling. Therefore, without hesitation, he pulls out his musket and shoots Frankenstein. Agathe isnt happy, as she didnt get the opportunity to explain to Felix the situation. She doesnt want to kill him and this is partially because she has gotten to know him from the inside, as she is blind, and therefore isnt capable of judging him. However, despite his conversation with Agathe, the monster thinks that she also is seeking for revenge and therefore runs away with his shot arm. The most likely reason he thinks that Agathe wants revenge is because there is a negative and incessant reaction from everyone he meets.

How does this affect the Monster? What impact does it have on his life? What choices does he make as a result? Now that this incessantly negative reaction by people is constantly repeated, the monster feels as though everyone is betraying and abandoning him, and despite his conversation earlier on with Agathe, he is still convinced that no one will support him and therefore now, as a result, he has chosen to make plans to impulse revenge. However, since the monster has a soul, he is able to grow mentally, rationalize, and make decisions by himself as he has feelings. He is aware that humans are not likely to accept him and that the rational thing to do was to live in isolation or to find someone else like himself, and therefore he makes the choice to keep searching for one and give up on his revenge plans. The monster does have a lot of human qualities and cant face the rejection, and as a result he is impacted negatively with his mixed emotions.

How will you change the situation? How might things How will this affect the Monster? What impact will it happen differently during the scene? have on his life? What choices will he make as a result?

In order to succeed you need to:

NOTE ON STAGING SET DESIGN A simple cottage, with vines that reach the rounded thatched roof that is surrounded by trees in a forest, providing great privacy. Inside: A wooden table, 4 chairs surrounding the table, and a jar of water with 2 cups on the table. The interior of the cottage: A wooden table located at the center of the room, surrounded by 4 chairs. In front of the table is a large bay window, near the center of the cottage and another slandered medium one to the far side. A dark wooden door with a large circular door knocker (for Felix to enter and exit) Props A gun for Felix (Musket (Placed in the right corner of the room)) A jug of water along with a few pieces of freshly picked blueberries. Costumes Monster: Ripped navy blue pants and a plain white shirt. Agathe: A long floral dress with a few ripped edges and dirt

Name: Sophie Kabbabe Date: Felix: White v-cut shirt, dirty brown trousers and a musket. LIGHTING/SOUND/SPECIAL EFFECTS SOUND Bursting door sound/effect when Felix enters the cottage, shooting noise, sad emotional music when Agathe dies. LIGHTING Little light focusing on Agathe during her last thoughtful words. When Agathe dies, there is dim lighting. _____________________________________________________________________________________ I chose these specific props because I wanted a living room with a mixture of a dining room atmosphere because in the cottages interior design I made it a bit spacey so it enables the monster to fit into areas around the cottage and it would make him feel calmer and more welcomed rather than the dark woods which he has been escaping from because he is being attacked. I chose to include a jug of water, mainly because Felix would go and bring it to Agathe and that place is near where the Monster is hiding. At this point the scene begins to advance because later on the Monster is heard by Agathe _____________________________________________________________________________________ CHARACTERS Monster: The Monster on the outside is very vile which is why society wants to shoot him but on the inside the Monster is a very caring person. The Monster cannot speak good English at first and does not develop it throughout the scene. The Monster is muscular, large, and very strong. Felix: Is very tempestuous and has no patience. He is willing to do anything for Agathe and is very muscular. Agathe: Blind, but knows where everything is if she works with a slower pace and patience. A very caring person and can be very emotional. _____________________________________________________________________________________ A Sacrifice For Love After the Monster roams incessantly in the endless forest, he finally comes across a senescent cottage. Luckily, the large bay window of the home is marginally opened as the people inside seem to prefer to inhale fresh air, enabling the Monster to vaguely hear the conversation going on inside. He notices that there are two mature individuals, a woman and a man, conversing together. Inside the cottage. Felix picks up his functional musket and gets ready to leave and go hunting. Agathe is sitting at her convenient table, preparing the dinner for the night. She begins early, as she is blind, and therefore needs to take a slower pace, however despite her difficulties; she is still able to prepare piquant food. Felix: Those are some scrumptious looking handful of blueberries you got there, Agathe. Agathe: I surely agree! They are newly harvested, and Im sure theyll go well with whatever meat you will be able to catch and prey on.

Felix: Well Im feeling more impulsive and stimulated than ever; we need to prosper in order to live a luscious life and tonight will finally be the night in where we will lavish with a feast, Im sure of it. Agathe: Well someone seems motivated, dont worry, Im willingly inclined to help make tonight pleasant. By the way, can you please go and get the glass and jug of water over there? I reckon Ive put it there; well thats what I remember at least. It will get you hydrated and psyched up. Felix: Sure, whatever you desire. Felix heads to the other end of the table, where he can directly see through the center window. This causes for the Monster, which has been cautious the whole time, to become fearful that he may notice him and therefore conceals himself next to the large bay window. He makes sure he positions himself well so that he still has an adequate view of what is going on inside. Felix begins to think he is hearing a little bit of wheezing as he comes closer, however he is still unconscious that someone is there so instead of peering through the window, he glances at it momently and then walks back to Agathe to hand her the jug of water so she can pour some into the glass for him. Agathe: What took you so long and why so mute? Felix: Forget about it, I just thought Id heard an unfamiliar noise that made me feel like someone was there. Agathe: Well I wish that were true. It just brings back unforgettable memories of us two back in the days where we werent isolated from society. You should know better, Felix that would never happen! Well youd better head off and occupy yourself with some hunting; dinner needs to be ready soon. Felix: Yeah.Youre right, I surmise. I really should stop fussing about something so unrealistic. Well, goodbye, and see you soon. I promise youll evoke delightful sensations once the nourishing dear or other luxurious meat comes. Agathe gets up and heads to the door, in where she hugs Felix goodbye. Felix then leaves, and now Agathe, whom is alone now, walks steadily back to the table, with agony, making her begin to feel rather weary. She feels the table and takes a seat nearest to the table. The Monster is unaware of the fact that she is blind and therefore becomes a little petrified, so he re-positions himself more carefully but accidentally knocks over a few leftover glass bottles outside. Agathe then thinks she hears a sound, stands up and furthermore steps out of her seat, and begins to ruminate that someone may actually be there. This makes her feel rather frightened since she cant see and Felix isnt there to give her any details of what may be there and what exactly is taking place. Agathe: Whowhos there? Please show yourself. The Monster gets the impression and presumes that it may be safe to surrender himself to her after he hears her affectionate voice and therefore staggers himself into the home and pursues himself next to Agathe but notices she doesnt move that much. Monster: Me am friend. No hurt. Please. I no like the thrashing. It hurt. I innocentdont worry. Agathe becomes startled and moves back a little, however still remains in a state of calmness. Agathe: Well for a starter, I cant see you since Im blind but you sound really sweet, thanks for offering to help. If youre free, Ill be happy for you to enjoy a nice cup of tea with me. Please make your self feel comfortable and take a seat. Apologies for my rather impolite reaction to your presence at first its because I havent seen anyone, other than my brother, Felix, for so long so you surprised me. Monster: It okay. Please, tell me more about yourself, no worries, Im sure Felix will be blissful for you to keep us company during dinner, tonight. You will be able to meet him as soon as he comes back from hunting some food for us. Ill have to explain your situation of unfortunately having to flee, but we had to too, so we totally understand. Mind me ask, why did you have to evade? Monster: Ok I can explain. I want friend. I love. I go to village to look and find but no one like me. They loathe me. They say I vile. I no like. Agathe: Felix, calm down, and explain to me whats the problem? I was just about to introduce you to him! Hes so endearing! Felix, at this point, has become very tempestuous. Felix: Agathe! Have you lost your mind? MOVE! Quickly! Im going to shoot him and end his life once and for all. Please Agathe, move, do it at least for the villagers! Agathe steps in front of the monster, enveloping herself and securing him. Agathe: NO! I wont let you harm someone so innocent! Monster: Agatheeeeeeeeee! Nooooooooooooooo! What you do? Nooooooooooo! Why? She innocent. Nooooo! Felix then realizes what he has done and pours with sweat. The room is filled with despair. Felix falls to his knees and tries to talk to Agathe very quickly. Felix: Agathe! Oh my God! Agathe! Please say something! Dont leave me! Please! Ill do anything for you, just please dont leave me! Agathe takes one last breath, and falls into her sleep, departing her life, for good. Felix then begins to experience remorseful feelings, as he knows its his fault, for he is guilty. An hour later, after they both stare at Agathes lying body, Felix speaks up. Felix: What have Idone? Monster: Why? Me say innocent. Look at what you do. She so nice. Felix: I wish I were like her. Youre right, she wasnt just nice, she was also the most courteous, sympathetic, and understanding person Ive ever had the opportunity of knowing. No one can ever replace such a marvelous sister. and now that shes gone, I dont know what to do. The Monster has mixed emotions as he is placed in a situation in where he is happy that someone finally loves him, to the point where they sacrifice their own life, but again he is upset about the state she has left Felix in and how she left him, for he no longer has anyone. Monster: I know. We listen to what she say. We live together. You hide me. She will look at us from above and she will behappy.
