    INTRODUCTION English Literature Components are introduced to the school students with hope to bring a positive impact to the English language learning process. Ironically, literature components have become the biggest threats to the students of SMK. Sungai Asap. This is due to the poor competency in English language. Generally, students of SMKSA are in the low proficiency group and have negative perceptions towards English language. These two factors hinder the students from reading the literature text and giving the English teachers a hard time to teach literature in the classroom. Thus, ELS advisors and English Language Panel came out with an idea to integrate literature in the English Week: Phase 2 programme. English Week: Phase 2 with the theme ‘Express Yourself Through Literature’, aims to show the fun side of English literature. The main focus for phase 2 is to introduce the literature texts and integrate fun learning literature activities. Students will have the chance to engage in exciting activities such as choral speaking, choir, drama and poetry in action. These activities will capture the students’ attention and provide alternatives instead of dry tiresome reading activities in the classroom. English Week: Phase 2 will be held from 24th April 2011 until 28th April 2011. The theme is ‘Express Yourself Through Literature’. RATIONALE It is important to change the students’ perception towards literature for the components will be tested in the examinations. Moreover, literature is actually a good way to attract students in learning English language especially with all the activities that the teachers could carry out with the poems, short stories and novels. This programme is an eye opener for the teachers and students that various teaching and learning methods could be applied in the literature period. Contextualise techniques are important so that the students will get the chance to explore the text and relate it with their everyday life, compare and contrast, arrange the story-line, perform the components and etc. By engaging these activities, students will have the chance to show off their talents, improve their soft skills and boost their confidence in speaking. TARGET Intermediate Proficiency Level Students Low Proficiency Level Students OBJECTIVES OF THE ENGLISH WEEK PROGRAMME 1. To change students’ perception towards literature 2. To guide the students in answering the literature questions (examinations) 3. To build up students’ confidence in spoken English 4. To boost the students’ enthusiasm in learning English Token of appreciation English Week crews would like to wish a heartiest thank you to 1. The Principal of SMK Sungai Asap, Tn. Hj. Wan Mohd Khalik B. Wan Ibrahim for the undivided support to the English Week crews and programme 2. The Administrators, Mr. Mohd Zailani Md. Nor ( PK 1), Mr. Zamri Zakaria, Mdm Che Rosbi Che Lah for the guidance and advice before, during and after the programme 3. Mr. Hashim and Mr. Amali for helping us with the PA systems 4. Mdm. Siti Zuriati for her advice regarding banners, decorations and supplying us with watercolours etc 5. Fellow teachers for the full cooperation and collaboration 6. Counselling Unit for their generosity in providing us with the old NSTP newspapers 7. SMKSA staff for the printing, photocopying and etc 8. Members of English Language society 9.
