Course Overview
Extensive reading is a compulsory subject in English Department which is given for
the fifth semester students. This subject introduces the students about how to read as
much as possible in and out the classroom. They also get to catch the meaning of the text
and enjoy it. The students will also be introduced various materials that can be used in
improving their reading. According to Palmer (1964:11), extensive reading means reading
book after book. A readers attention should be on the meaning, not a language, of the
text. Additionally, Palmer contrasted with intensive reading, by which he meant to take a
text, study it line by line, referring every moment to our dictionary and our grammar,
comparing, analyzing, translating, and retaining every expression that it contains.
Course Objective
By the end of the semester, the student can read as much as possible material they
like, comprehend the meaning, enjoy and report it orally. They also are hoped to be
independent reader who can freely give and share opinion and knowledge toward their
reading journey. Also they are hopefully able to enrich their vocabulary and knowledge,
compare, analyze, translate and retain every expression that it contains in their reading
