I would not have thought it! - exclaim a great many visitors to Budapest on their first impressions. Though a capital of 1,7 million inhabitants, Budapest succeeded in remaining a hidden treasure yet offering a lot.

The first officially recognised closed wine district of the world was founded in 1737 in Tokaj, Northeast Hungary. This is where the wine which our national anthem praises comes from. A true comapanion of Hungarian foie gras, Tokaji Asz is a real Hungaricum described by Louis XIV of France as theWine of Kings, King of Wines. He was not the only monarch to enjoy Hungaricums. The porcelain manufacture of Herend also shipped to kings and queens. Porcelains made by hand made their way to Queen Victorias court. The plinka distilled from fruits picked from the tree is a Hungaricum too. The strong beverage can be consumed before or after the meal. But not to the extent that you stop being coherent in case youd want to spend some time solving one of the most well-known Hungarian inventions, the Rubik Cube.
