TO THE INSTRUCTOR Thank you for selecting Story by Story PLUS: Beginner to use with your students. I hope you enjoy using this book as much as I enjoyed developing it! Story by Story PLUS was designed on the premise that students learn to read by reading. It is an engaging reading textbook for low-beginner students of English as a second language (ESL/EFL) and native-speaking adults who are learning to read (Adult Literacy). The stories can also be used for children who understand English and need reading practice and reinforcement. Story by Story PLUS enables your students to do the following: 1. Develop their reading comprehension, vocabulary and fluency; 2. Build confidence when reading; and 3. Develop strategies to read texts independently. The topics and vocabulary in Story by Story PLUS are what students would encounter in English-speaking settings in everyday life, at home and at work. The activities are designed to build both confidence as well as

language. Story length ranges from 100 to 300 words, with increased difficulty as the units progress. It is assumed that the student has received adequate basic reading instruction and knows how to read simple English words. The Appendix contains select vocabulary that ESL students often encounter but do not remember offhand, including: cardinal and ordinal numbers, days of the week, months of the year and the seasons. As reading is much more than just decoding, the activities in Story by Story PLUS are designed to encourage and facilitate students comprehension and engagement with the text. The types of activities included this book have been shown, in sound research, to improve readers' comprehension and language development. Each unit features the following activities: 1. Pre-reading Questions Each story is preceded by questions related to the story, to help students mentally prepare for what they will read. When used as discussion questions, the pre-reading questions help the instructor assess students background knowledge on the given topic.

2. Graphic Organizers Simple graphic organizers encourage students to interact with the text actively and construct text meaning. The graphic organizers in this book also help students to construct and understand the relationships among ideas found in the story. 3. Check Your Understanding The comprehension questions are appropriate for basiclevel students. In order to build confidence at this level, answers to the questions can be easily found or inferred from the text. 4. Build Your Vocabulary Vocabulary words are taken directly from the stories. Students make use of context to understand the meaning of vocabulary words and choose appropriate words for each sentence. Students can be encouraged to look up the meaning of vocabulary words in the dictionary, as needed, and to write the meaning or translation next to the word. 5. Develop Your Writing All writing tasks require students to include at least three vocabulary words in the story. This helps them to think

about word meanings and facilitates recall. Writing topics are directly related to unit readings. 6. Strengthen Your Grammar Grammar topics are kept short and simple, to help students develop confidence and build on success. Grammar lessons tend to build on previous lessons, but can be used as self-contained lessons. Each lesson takes 40-50 minutes. In case of time constraints, some activities can be assigned for homework. I am committed to providing students as effective and engaging a literacy experience as possible.
