Volume 13, Number 15

A r e We the O ne ?
And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples and said to Him, "Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?" Jesus answered and said to them, "Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me" (Matthew 11:2-6).

There was an advertisement in the newspaper for a car that I thought I might want to purchase. I went to the dealer and asked to see the car. The salesman told me that he did not know where it was located on the lot and proceeded to direct me to other cars under the pretense of looking for that car. I think they call such a technique the Old Bait and Switch. I left the car lot, a bit perturbed. Shortly after arriving at home, I received a call from that salesman. He had searched and found my phone number. He wanted me to return to the dealer and look at another car. I plainly told him that I would not ever return to his place, or ever buy a car from him. I explained that I had been looking for something, and he did not have it. Further, his dishonest actions had only turned me even more against him. Now, that dealership will probably sell a lot of cars to a lot of people. Some people are glad to look at just about anything. Some will be open to several options, as long as the price is right. Many are not. Guests come through our doors by invitation or by curious searching. They may even check the Looking for a Church Home section of the visitors card. Others will not even make it to the building for a visit. In every case judgments are made. They are looking. They want to find something. Will they find it in us. Are we the one they are looking to find? Jesus pointed his inquirers to two things. He called on them to see the benevolent actions given to those who had obvious needs. He also noted that the gospel was being preached. It was then their choice. We can do the same, and be the one they should be looking to find. Russ
