Relevance of Battery Storage for Rural Electrification and Powering Telecom Towers

Puneet Rustagi April 2013

The Need

Thats why Husk Power created small decentralized off-grid systems smallscale, local energy

Our Vision
We aim to provide electricity to 10 million energy deprived people across the world in over 10,000 villages by installing 3000 plants by 2017. We will also power telecom towers as part of village outreach vision

A very large opportunity

Electrification rate in rural India is 52%; By 2030, only 30% of the rural communities will be connected through grid; Telecom operators need reliable power because energy has become the largest cost driver; 40% of opex on power and fuel; Power deficient communities and telecom towers are mostly colocated;

The Solution
A solar and biomass hybrid power system which works along with a battery storage system to provide households and telecom towers with electricity.
Solar power system Telecom towers

Battery Storage Bank

*Only for telecom towers; for the households the battery is placed in their houses

Community entrepreneurs extend power into the community

Biomass power system

Introduction to Husk Power Systems

Founded in 2007, first 40kWe went live in Aug 2007 Strategic partnership with Shell Foundation for capacity building, establishing heath and safety procedures and training infrastructure. Manages close to 100 biomass and solar offgrid power plants as of Mar 2013; all of them are in Bihar, India Serves more than 350 villages and over 150,000 low income households in India Trained over 300 operators and mechanics

Key features of the business model

Husk Power builds, operates and owns the plants as well as the battery storage bank

System is designed in a away to minimize per unit costs as well as capital costs.

For Telecom towers, we run a power cable from the plant and power is sold on a per unit basis

For household consumers, power is sold on a monthly fee basis

Utility of energy storage devices

Helps to increase the reliability of power which is critical for the success of business; Provides more time for repair and maintenance in the event of downtime;

Helps to combine different sources of power and utilize them to manage the demand together; advantage of synergy from different sources;
