APRIL 2013 Volume 5

From Our Principal

Dear Bailey Lake Families, Parent Input on Classroom Placement 2013-14 Considerable work is done to ensure the proper placement of each student from one grade level to the next. The principal begins the process in the spring with input from teaching staff and parents. Teacher input: Teachers fill out a placement form for each student which includes information on special assistance, known disabilities, achievement levels in math and language arts, test scores, areas of strengths, areas of academic difficulties, and special interests of the child. In addition, there are comments regarding initiative, self-control, and work habits. The teachers use this information to build and balance class lists, keeping in mind the number of teachers provided to staff the building and provisions on the CEA contract relating to class size. Parent input: Information from parents must be submitted during the planning and informationgathering period. District Policy prohibits parents from requesting a specific teacher, but parents may describe their childs learning style to help us place the child in a suitable learning atmosphere. Parent input letters (in writing) must be received by Mr. Gualtieri by FRIDAY, May 3, 2013. Notification of student placement will be made in late-August. Sincerely,

Market Day Pick-up

From Our PTA President

Dear Bailey Lake Families,
As I am looking at the April calendar, it is really hard to believe that our children have just had the last break of this school year! Spring Break is over, and, hopefully, spring is finally here! Filled with many fun activities, March, a national reading month, proved to be a great success. A big thank-you to the Bailey Lake Read-to-Me Committee, Rebecca Walker and Judy Haas, for organizing and coordinating the Balto and the Great Race reading schedule and dress-up week. The children loved it! Seuss Night, a big and traditional part of this month, was another wonderful event of games and activities dedicated to reading and math. Thank you to Amy Darnell, the events chair, our great staff, parents, and all the volunteers who spent their evening bringing joy to the children! Speaking of children, even a small commitment can provide great benefits to our kids! We still need to fill a few PTA Board positions as well as some program chair positions. The PTA supplements the curriculum with many programs that enrich our students, and makes it possible for teachers obtain additional classroom items. Without your help this would not be possible. Contact Kim Hardtke at hardtke@comcast.net or sign up in the school lobby. A few activities coming up are Kindergarten Orientation on April 16th, and C.A.T.S day, our school-wide service learning day, on April 26th. All 2012-2013 Reflections participants and their families are invited to the Reflections Awards Reception on April 9th at 6 p.m. Congratulations to Phoebe Savoie and Mya Brown for winning the State level in Dance Choreography and Movie Production in the Primary division. Way to go!

Now Is Your Time to be Part of our Success!

The PTA is currently seeking Board/Chair position nominations for the2013-2014 school year. If you would like to nominate someone, or yourself, please contact Kim Hardtke at hardtke@comcast.net. We cannot have all the wonderful PTA events for our kids without volunteers!
- please consider joining the fun! The following is a listing of the Board/Chair positions with brief descriptions of the duties. Further information can be found on the PTA website. Please let Kim know if you have any questions. Thanks, in advance, for your consideration.

On March 2, three Bailey Lake students shared their love for art by donating their framed artwork to the Ryan Kennedy Memorial Fund, which is raising money for a new park in Clarkston, called A Place To Dream. Buckshots Restaurant hosted a kid raffle and silent auction. The three Bailey Lake students artwork pieces raised $215. The total amount raised that evening was $15,000, thanks to the generosity of the Clarkston Community and beyond. The students are hoping to inspire additional artists to participate next year

Congratulations Mrs. Minot!

Every year, Clarkstons PTA Council awards one employee from each PTA unit with their Difference Maker Award. This award, given in honor of Founders Day, recognizes the difference the winners have made by actively empowering staff, parents or students, advocating for all children, demonstrating initiative, ingenuity or creativity in addressing an issue important to the school family or community and supporting the work of the PTA. This year, the BLE PTA has chosen Mrs. Daneil Minot (4th grade teacher) to receive this award. Mrs. Minot was nominated for, among other things, her work as the data representative for BLEs new Standard Based Grading System, her research in adapting the Pivot Viewer program for use at Bailey Lake which tracks the individual progress of students at many levels, as well as her constant dedication to each and every child she teaches. From volunteering to do free tutoring, to personalizing her instruction to each childs needs, to supporting our school and PTA, Mrs. Minot is a huge asset to Bailey Lake and we are thrilled to see her receive this award. She will receive this award at the May School Board Meeting. Everyone is welcome to attend and support her. Congratulations Mrs. Minot!

Does Your Child Have Food Allergies?

The odds of you answering yes to that question have been increasing steadily over past years. We have many children with various food allergies at Bailey Lake, which can be very challenging. The questions and concerns seem endless. Managing these allergies is hard at home, but can be much more stressful when your child is at school and not with you. To address these issues and raise awareness among our entire school community, we are forming a Bailey Lake Allergy Group. We are in the infancy of planning, but envision our group supporting one another, sharing information and recipes, raising awareness of our fellow classmates and their families, developing ideas to celebrate Food Allergy Awareness Week in May, and possibly even forming a team to walk in the FARE Walk (Food Allergy Research and Education formally FAAN) in October of 2013. We will be contacting our families with food allergies shortly to begin forming the group. We look forward to hearing new ideas and supporting one another. If you would like to get involved prior to receiving our upcoming email, feel free to contact Kim Hardtke, hardtke@comcast.net or Nikki Morgan, nik5779@yahoo.com.
