Qualities of a Good Teacher

Most people would agree that education is an agent of change in a society. The
role of teachers as educationists is therefore very important in determining the program
of a nation. But, in recent years, the qualities of teachers in educating the younger
generations to be disciplined, knowledgeable, educated with good moral values and the
last but the least they must be employable is a great concern. In short, the future of the
nation depends whether our teachers are capable of producing students who are not
only good citizen but productive to the nation. A wise saying goes “A teacher is a light
house which shows the right path to people in darkness”.

In history, we witnessed many examples of great teachers like Socrates,

Aristotle, Luqman and Hasrat Muhammad who had changed the world. These people
are great teachers because they possess many excellent characteristics. To me, there
many characteristics help in shaping an effective teacher such as creative, being a role-
model, positive attitude, patience, friendliness, sense of humor and etc.

Being creative is of paramount important as an effective teacher because

creativity will not only attract students to learn but enjoy learning. Learning becomes a
fun on something enjoyable. In the process, teachers should have confidence and belief
in themselves to try new techniques such using computer technology (Power Point),
music or etc. to show their creativity in helping the students to learn at ease. Besides,
they can use poem, songs, and most importantly the sense of humor to make their
lessons interesting on catchy. In short, they should adopt various different teaching
styles and techniques to cater the needs of their students.

Another characteristic of effective teachers is that they should be a role model to

their students. In other words, they must gain the respect and love their students.
Students go to them whenever they have problems and they will be very willing to give a
hand no matter under whatever condition. They care about their students not only
during the lesson but also go beyond the walls of their classroom.
 Besides compassion and love to the students, they could have helped students
even through a mental breakdown. This shows patience is very vital in making an
effective teacher. They have to be patience to keep explaining to the students until all
the students really understand the contents of the lesson. In the classroom, they must
have patience to wait until a distraction calms down the students.

Being approachable and friendly is equally important because teachers will not
be able to help their students if they are not friendly, to show friendliness, teachers must
remember the name of every student. They should be able to identify the student’s
strength and weakness. This will make their job easier in helping the students to learn
and make improvement in the studies. Most importantly, effect teachers must appreciate
the abilities of their students. They must be friendly enough to listen to the students’
problems and understand them an eventually know how to motivate the students to
learn and perform better in their studies. At times, they need to be friendly with students’
parents in order to solve students’ learning problems at home. In many cases, they have
to help students to over come problems at home relating to their performance at school.

Thus, it can not be denied that qualities of a good teacher are important in school
to ensure excellent qualities of students. In fact, the qualities of teachers will help to
improve the academicals performance of the students and the achievement of schools
as an effective intuition of learning.
