2 Problem Description:
General Information: 1. The project is the Transbay Transit Center located in San Francisco, CA. 2. The problem is divided into 4 phases: Modeling, Model Quality Control (QC), Estimating, and Scheduling. Each phase will require different tasks and address different portions of the project. Please read instructions carefully and provide all requested information in the proper format. 3. As indicated in the pre-problem statement, teams may use any software available, but the deliverables need to be in the format indicated. 4. The presentations will be the time to demonstrate/show how teams arrived at their solutions.

Phase I Modeling:
Goal: Evaluate the ability to interpret 2D plans and create an accurate and functional 3D model. Introduction & Tasks: Using the provided 2D documents, prepare two separate models of the following in your choice of modeling platform. Models should be well organized and accurate. 1. Substructure Model needs to include the following a. Foundation sizes & locations b. Train Platform wall heights, slab thickness, & location c. Walls thickness & height d. Columns size, height, quantity e. Lower Level Concourse slab thickness, beam sizes, opening sizes and locations 2. Exterior Skin System Model skin type GL-1 in accordance with architectural plans. a. The GL-1 system is comprised of four (4) repetitive sections. b. Points will be awarded for each correctly modeled typical section. c. Points will also be awarded for correct application of each section to complete the entire GL-1 system. 3. Landscaping Model appropriate landscaping scope based on the

following

Information Provided: 1. Substructure 2D plans structural .dwg and .pdf format 2. Exterior skin 2D plans architectural .dwg and .pdf format 3. Landscaping 2D plans - .dwg format

Deliverables:
1. Substructure 3D model- Native format (.rvt, .pln, etc) & Navisworks (.nwd) 2. Exterior skin 3D model - Native format (.rvt, .pln, etc) & Navisworks (.nwd) 3. Landscape 3D model - Native format (.rvt, .pln, etc) & Navisworks (.nwd)

Phase 2 Model Quality Control:

Goal: Evaluate provided 3D models to determine both modeling and reporting accuracy. Introduction & Tasks: Each team will be given two different (architect & structural engineer) structural steel 3D models of the Transbay Transit Center and IFC exports from each model. All models contain errors. The errors between these models differ. The challenges to the team are to identify the errors within the model using model checking techniques. Note: You can reconcile up to 2 models.

Information Provided: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Revit Lower structural steel model - .rvt and .ifc Revit Upper structural steel model - .rvt and .ifc ArchiCad structural steel model .pla and .ifc Structural Steel 2D Drawings - .pdf format Model Discrepancy Report Template - .xls format Structural Steel Estimate Report Sheet - .xls format

Deliverables: 1. Complete Discrepancy Report - .xls format, include screenshots, for the Revit model. 2. Complete Discrepancy Report - .xls format, include screenshots, for the ArchiCad model 3. Provide a narrative describing the quality control process for models used.

4. Report the total tonnage of structural steel for elements identified . Use Estimate Report provided by Webcor Builders.

Phase 3 Estimating
Goal: Teams will be evaluated on their ability to analyze subcontractor data and utilize the provided model. Introduction & Tasks: Use the provided model and subcontractor information to create drywall estimate for the Lower Concourse Level. Information Provided: 1. Drywall contractor sub sheet - .xls spreadsheet indicates work activities & information required 2. Lower Level concourse model - .rvt, .pln, .dwg, .ifc formats Deliverables: 1. Unit costs for each work activity and all wall types. .xls format 2. Linear footage and total cost for each wall type based on model.

Phase 4 Scheduling
Goal: Teams will be evaluated on their ability to analyze and apply productivity data and utilize the provided model Introduction & Tasks: Use the provided model and subcontractor information to create drywall estimate for the Lower Concourse Level.

Information Provided:

1. Substructure 3D model- .rvt, .pln, .dwg, .ifc formats 2. Substructure Estimate - .xls format 3. Productivity & task information - .xls

Deliverables:
1. 4D Animation - .avi movie & native format 2. Model-based schedule native & pdf format

3 Presentations
1. As stated in the problem introduction, teams will act as the general contractors preconstruction team and address their solutions and presentations to the judges, who will be acting as the owner/developer. 2. Teams will be allowed 20 minutes for presentations, followed by 10 minute Q&A. 3. Presentation order will be determined by random draw at 7:30 AM. 4. At this time, teams will submit their presentations to the judges on a provided flash drive. Judges will return at time of presentation. 5. Teams may stay for other team presentations, but teams may not view presentations prior to their designated time. 6. There will be limited set-up time, so please confirm that computer-projector setup is working correctly.
