If X is a random variable that is uniformly distributed on the interval 4 x 12 then the CDF of X is: 8 :x<0 < 0 1 : 4 x 12 (a) f (x) = : 8 1 : x > 12 8 I narrowed it down to Answer C. :x<4 < 0 1 : 4 x 12 (b) f (x) = : 8 Online I found the formula for the CDF of a continuous 1 : x > 12 8 uniform distribution and substituted: :x<4 < 0 x 4 : 4 x 12 (c) f(x) f (x= )= : 8 F(x) = 0 for x < a 1 : x > 12 8 x-a/x-b for a < x < b :x<0 < 0 1 for x > b x 4 : 4 x 12 (d) f (x) = 8 : 0 : x > 12 8 :x<0 < 0 x 1 : 4 x 12 (e) f (x) = : 8 1 : x > 12 2. For what value of k is the function p(x) = kx2 a pdf on the interval 1 x 4 ? (a) (b) (c) (d) (e)
1 21 1 2 1 3 1 12 1 63

Unsure how to solve.

3. Suppose the wait time, x (in minutes), on a telephone call to the IRS is exponentially distributed with (pdf) p(x) = .05e .05x what is the average wait time a person can expect on a call to the IRS? (a) 2 minutes (b) 15 minutes

(c) (c) 20 20 minutes minutes

(d) 28 minutes (e) 35 minutes

I looked online under exponential distribution and found a formula for the mean: ^(1) So I substituted .05 for and solved the problem.

4. Suppose a pdf is given in the graph below. Find P (X

1)

I drew the line in red and just estimated that it was 2/3 of 1.

(a) (b) (c) (d) (e)

1 2 1 3 1 4 2 2/3 3 3 4

5. Given the 8 pdf: :x<3 < 0 1 :3x9 f (x) = 6 : 0 :x>9 Then the median for this distribution is: (a) 3 (b) 4 (c) 5

(d) (d) 66
(e) 7

When I looked online, it said the formula for median distribution is 1/2(a+b) so I substituted and got 6.

6. Given the pdf in the graph below the mean for this distribution is

I was really confused by this problem. I tried drawing the red and just estimated it to be 1/2 but I don't feel like I did this problem correctly.

1 (a) 1/2 (a) 2

(b) (c) (d) (e)

1 3 1 4 1 5 1 6

7. Given the pdf f (x) =

4e 4 x : x 0 0 :x<0 Then the corresponding CDF is: 1 4e 4x : x 0 (a) F (x) = 0 :x<0 4x 1 e :x 0 (b) F(x) (b) F (x)== 0 :x<0 4x 1 e :x 0 (c) F (x) = 1 :x<0 4x 1 4e :x 0 (d) F (x) = 1 :x<0 e 4x 1 : x 0 (e) F (x) = 0 :x<0

I eliminated answer choice A and D because 1-4e^(-4x) means x would not 0. I eliminated answer C because 1 would not make x< 0. Left with answer B and E, I eliminated E because when I plugged in a random variable for x (I used 2), it was a negative number, thus did not full x 0.

8. For what value of k is the following graph a pdf?

(a) (b) (c) (d) (e)

1 2 1 5 1 10 2 15 4 15

No clue. I don't even feel condent guessing,

9. Suppose X is an exponentially distributed random variable with Find P (2 X 10): (a) .35 (b) .47 (c) .52 (d) .67 (d) .67 (e) .92

= .35.

First of all, does P mean pdf? I looked online for an exponential distribution formula for cdf and found one that stated: 1 e^(x) I tried substituting in .35 for and tried it in my calculator: 10 1e0.35xdx 2 But it didn't come out with a solution offered. So I tried the one for pdf: *e^(-*x) 10 0.35e0.35xdx = .466 2

I don't think I solved this correctly. I was confused and just plugged this in randomly into:
10. Suppose8 the CDF of a distribution is given by: :x<0 < 0 x4 : 0 x 1 F (x) = : 1 :x>1 Use this to nd the mean of the distribution. (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (e)
4 5 3 4 2 3 2 5 1 1/5 5

b f(x)dx a So I plugged 1 (x^4)dx 0 and got 1/5, which was an answer choice.

11. Suppose the test scores in a class are normally distributed with an average test score of 78 and standard deviation of 15. What is the probability that a student chosen at random from that class got a score between 84 and 90? (a) .4435 (b) .6327 (c) .2314 (d) .1327 (d) .1327 (e) .1554 12. Suppose X is normally distributed with = 400 and (a) .2045 (b) .1554 (c) .3554 (d) .0491 (e) .5153 (e) .5153 13. Suppose you sell shirts for $5 and hats for $3.If x is the number of shirts sold and y is the number of hats sold then your total revenue for these two items can be described by: (a) R R=f(x,y)= 5x + +3y (a) = f(x,y) = 5x 3y (b) R=f(5,3)= x + y (c) R=f(5x +3y)=15 (d) R=f(x)= 8x (e) R=f(y)=2y = 250. Find P (300 X 670)

I used my calculator.

I used my calculator.

I eliminated answer E, D, C because I thought they didn't make sense. I chose A because I feel like you would need to multiple $5 by x (number of shirts sold) to nd how many shirts sold, and multiply $3 by y (number of hats sold) to nd how many hats sold. To nd the total, you would just add the two together.

14. Suppose f (x, y ) = 2x2 y 2 (a) 50x2 (b) 24x2 (b) 24x^2 (c) 36x2 (d) 6x2 (e) 30x2

4x2 y then f (x, 5)

f (x, 3) =

I used substitution. I got f(x,5) = 30x^2 and f(x,3) = 6x^2. So 30x^2 - 6x^2 = 24x^2.

15. Suppose we have the following table which gives Revenue as a function of h, hotdogs sold and s, sodas sold. If R=f(h,s) = 4h + 3s, then the missing entry x is: Soda R 2 Hotdogs 3 4 5 1 11 15 19 23 2 14 18 x 26 3 17 21 25 29

(a) 22 22 (a) 22
(b) 32 (c) 20 (d) 16 (e) 26

I looked at column 2 and noticed that each of the numbers were increasing by 4. So I just added 4 to 18 to get 22.
