Magazine Title The title of my magazine is called 'Breakout' in which I feel the indie rock genre represents as most of them appear to break out of nowhere to create great hits which are very popular with music listeners. It also represents that you don't really see many indie rock artists in the UK charts at all nowadays so maybe they intend to break into the charts. These artists also bring something different to the normal chart music, so they bring more variety. This attracts Indie- rock fans as they like something different to the usual chart music, so the difference in genre will attract the 2. Graphology & Page Layout I kept the Graphology and Layout simple and based on other magazines in order to portray a style similar to currently used indie rock magazines such as Kerrang!, Q and NME in order to portray the information in a professional way. This would maintain the attention on the artists and features in the magazine. I maintained the same colour schemes throughout the magazine to make it consistent like other magazines, but challenged these things by using a black background on the cover and contents to explore a darker side. I based the contents page on a kerrang contents page to follow the conventions of a page layout of a real professional magazine to follow the professionalism of a normal magazine.

On the Double Page Spread, I followed the conventions by using 3 columns on the article, and indented the first letter of the introduction to the artist to make it stand out, which is what most professional magazines do. I also used a fold so the reader will know where the page folds.

3. Costumes, style and iconography I dressed my model in an outfit that represented the aspects of both rock and indie. The outfit itself was more rock based with a leather jacket and dark jeans, whereas the hair was more indie themed, with a boho themed plait on the underside of her hair that was visible in the photos. Boho is often

associated with indie music. My artist doesnt follow the iconography of any other artists as I wanted to make her look unique to any other artist, which follows the convention of indie rock music as each artist is unique to themselves. 4. Camera Work and Framing The Cover Shot was a medium close-up shot which is conventional to that of an indie rock magazine, on which the shots vary between close-ups and mid shots on the most part. I stuck to natural poses and angles for my model following feedback that my photos were awkward and indie rock kinds of poses are natural anyway. I decided to make my model smile to show that under all of the fame, she is just a normal person, following the convention that most indie artists are down to earth. 5. Fonts I have used a broken font (28 days later) to show the rock side of the magazine. It represents that the music is loud and broken, as in the music tarnishes the norm of chart music which is polished and clean whereas indie rock music isnt as polished. This challenges the fonts of indie rock magazines like Q who use bolder more monochrome fonts in their mastheads and cover lines to appeal to my audience. This masthead was inspired by Kerrang! magazine. An exclamation mark is also used just like Kerrang! in order to add to the statement of the magazine. This will make it stand out on a shelf because it is unconventional to the norm of indie rock magazines.

For the fonts for the article itself, I used the convention of the magazine as it is a plain monochrome font (Myriad Pro) so it is easy to read. 6. Genre and how the magazine cover, contents and spread suggests it I based my magazine on a mixture of magazines, Kerrang!, Q and NME in order to show elements of indie and rock magazines. This is to still bring out elements of the genre to the reader, sticking to the graphical features of the magazine, such as using 3 colours for my magazine and using natural poses for my artists. Cover: Based it on a conventional indie rock magazine, Q, with an image of Florence on the front:

This format draws attention to the artist more than the branding of the magazine. I have used a pull line on both magazines as that is what the convention is for most indie rock magazines. Contents:

This shows both the indie and the rock genre of the magazine. The broken font has been carried through from the contents page and social media has been carried through and an editors paragraph has been used as a form of communicating with the reader. This follows the convention of the fact that the genre produces down to earth music and that it is a friendly genre. Spread: I went against the convention of an indie rock magazine with the dark background as indie rock is usually a white background. I based it on a dark Paramore double page spread in Kerrang. However, my magazine ended up a lot darker as I edited out the scenery. This shows the dark rock side of the magazine due to the dark colouring.

7. Colour scheme The colour scheme is the typical for an indie rock magazine, black, red and white. This follows the typical conventions of an indie rock magazine as the likes of Q magazine carry this through most of their covers. This will make the reader feel that they have chosen the right genre to fit their music tastes. However this also goes against the convention as Q usually uses a mainly white background for their cover, contents and spread and I have used a black background.
