1st Assignment

CHAPTER 4: Motivating your followers

Introduction: One of the functions of a leader is to keep their followers motivated It is important to give the followers a sense of direction, a sense of importance and generally a belief in what they are doing. When employees in a company understand the importance of the task at hand and the kind of positive effect it might have on their professional and personal lives, it makes them perform better. Members of political parties often support their leaders because they really believe in the aims and objectives of the party and how it can help the country. But motivating someone is a complex task. Motivating a group of people even more complicated. Over the years, dozens of theories of motivation have been developed and studied, each one of these taking a different view of motivation.

The Assignment Question: Make a Group comprising of 3-5 Members, and Answer the following question: You have just been made the General Manager of Tech-ore, a software export company based in the city of Lahore, Pakistan. The company has usually developed software for Car manufactures such as Suzuki and BMW. Since the last 5 years, the sales of the company have been declining due to tough competition from India. Just recently, Suzuki stopped using Tech-ores products and shifted to a company based in India. Due to the declining sales, there have been massive lay-offs in the past 3 years and whereas 300 people used to work for Tech-ore before, only 110 remain today The morale is at an all time low. The employees are de motivated and there is a lack of creativity, something which is very important in the software Industry. As the General Manager, you are in a Leadership position and it is your task to keep your employees motivated and help them go through this tough time. Using any or all of the 3 classical theories of Motivation, namely 1. Maslows hierarchy of needs 2. McClelland achievement motivation theory 3. Herzbergs Two factor Theory Try to explain on how you would help motivate the remaining employees in the company and turn around the fortunes of Tech-ore.

Proper use of English: You can use word to improve your spellings and grammatical mistakes. Teams with good English skills would receive 1 mark Neatness and presentation: This is very important Creativity: How creative can you be while making this assignment? This can be anything different, something that stands out! Originality: It is very important to make your work original. Copy/pasting from websites is not allowed. Answer: This is not an easy assignment but it would help you understand on how to apply these theories in real life. The best answer would receive maximum Marks

Rules: You cannot work in a group of less than 3 people or more than 5 Hard copy of Group assignment should be submitted by Tuesday 23rd April 2013 Assignments submitted after this date would receive zero Marks.
