Ghana - Internet and Broadband Market - Overview and Statistics

Ghana was among the first countries in Africa connected to the Internet and to introduce ADSL broadband services. The sector is highly competitive with more than 140 licensed ISPs, although the bulk of the market is in the hands of only a few. Until recently, internet user penetration was below 10% of the population, mainly due to the poor condition of the national fixed-line network and the high cost of connectivity. However, developments are now speeding up following the introduction of wireless and 3G mobile and wireless broadband technologies such as HSPA, WiMAX and iBurst, and the arrival of three new international fibre links between 2010 and 2012 which has ended the monopolistic pricing of international bandwidth. The re-privatised national carrier, Ghana Telecom has begun to be more effective in driving the broadband market by expanding its retail as well as wholesale offerings under the new Vodafone banner.

Key developments:
The country is now served by four international submarine fibre optic cables, which is bringing down prices for broadband internet access.

Ghana - Mobile Market - Overview, Statistics and Forecasts

Synopsis
Since launching the first cellular mobile network in sub-Saharan Africa in 1992, Ghana has become one of the continents most vibrant mobile markets with now six competing operators, including regional heavyweights such as MTN, Vodafone, Bharti Airtel (formerly Zain) and Millicom (Tigo). The entry of Nigerias Globacom as the sixth player in 2012 has delivered another boost to the sector. Subscriber growth, however, has come at the expense of the average revenue per user (ARPU) which has fallen below US$5 per month for some of the operators. While the voice market is approaching saturation at more than 90% penetration in mid-2012, enormous potential in both subscriber and ARPU terms exists for 3G mobile broadband services which already represent the vast majority of Internet connections in the country.

Key developments:
Sixth mobile network launched; 3G mobile broadband services represent majority of Internet connections.

2011 prepaid mobile price analysis

Ghana has a competitive telecommunications market i. It has five mobile operators: Vodafone Ghana, Expresso Telecom Ghana, Tigo Ghana, MTN Ghana (the dominant), and Airtel Ghana. Six products were analysed. Airtel Ghana, the cheapest operator in the country, slightly reduced its tariffs between January 2011 and February 2011 with the reduction of the off off peak on net prices. MTN Ghana, the dominant operator, after reducing the Talk-a-lot on net price between March 2011 and April 2011, increased again the same prices in July 2011. However, one month later, in August 2011, tariffs dropped again with the introduction of My Zone. Finally, between November 2011 and December 2011 it introduced a flat rate for the Talk-a-lot reducing the off-net prices and bringing them to the same level with net prices. Tigo Ghana dropped the prices between October 2011 and November 2011 when it launched a flat pre-paid tariff. Vodafone Ghana is the most expensive operator in the country and it did not change its tariff plan throughout the year.

Fixed-Line Telephones Are Still Relevant STEPRI

Fixedline telephones in Ghana need strong and innovative policy interventions to revamp the sector. The government is allowingthe interventions should explore ways of increasing investment in the subsector to expand the coverage, and improve the quality of the infrastructure.
