Good Luck BARNSTORMERS!
Butch Hobson is hopeful that
the 2013 season, his third as
manager of the Barnstormers,
will bring an Atlantic League
championship to Lancaster.
BY BURT WILSON

T
he Lancaster Barnstormers
appear to be very good, once
again.
Stormers skipper Butch
Hobson has assembled a team that has
no apparent weaknesses. The Barn-
stormers reached the playoffs in 2011
for the frst time in fve seasons.
Last year, after a record-setting regu-
lar season, they reached the champion-
ship series. They suffered a heart-break-
ing loss to the Long Island Ducks when a
bunt single plated the winning run in the
ninth inning of the deciding game.
Now, the question is, can they take the
next step and deliver the Atlantic League
title to Lancaster?
Im going to always believe that Ive
got the best team on the feld, Hobson
said, and Ive got the best team in the
league and Ive got the team to beat.
I promised the fans here theyre
going to see the same quality of play (as
last season), the same quality of aggres-
siveness and well win the champion-
ship.
The Barnstormers spring roster is
flled with elite players. Eleven have
major league experience and 12 others
have reached the Triple-A level.
They also have the reigning Atlantic
League Player of the Year (outfelder
Blake Gailen) and the leagues Pitcher of
the Year (Dwayne Pollok).
This team looks great, said frst
baseman Daryle Ward, one of those
former big leaguers. I like the kind of
attitude we have in the clubhouse. The
guys are loose and having fun and were
gelling together.
Infeld
Ward will be part of an infeld that
includes:
Travis Denker, who batted .515 and
had four home runs and a league-record
12 RBIs for the Barnstormers in the
playoffs last year. Denker will probably
start the season at second base but can
also play frst and third;
Kody Kirkland, penciled in at third,
hit 17 homers for Lancaster last season,
and is healthy after battling back from
injuries last year;
Kevin Howard, who hit .381 in 31
games for the Stormers in 2011 before
being signed by Toronto, is set to start at
short;
And Olmo Rosario, who can play
second, third and short and was MVP of
the Can-Am League when he played for
Hobson at Nashua in 2007.
The Barnstormers have four outfeld-
ers, who Hobson says will play every

D
wayne Pollok has a quiet
confdence. He puts in
his work, doesnt bring
attention to himself. Does
whatever it takes for him to be suc-
cessful. Does whatever he can to
help his team.
Pollok started last season in the Lan-
caster Barnstormers bullpen, pitching
middle relief. Some would have sulked.
Pollok just did his job. When a spot
opened in the rotation, Pollok stepped
in and had one of the best seasons ever
for a Barnstormers pitcher.
The 6-4 right-hander won his frst
seven decisions, the frst time a Lan-
caster pitcher had ever accomplished
that feat. He fnished the season 14-4,
tying for most wins in the Atlantic
League and posted a league-leading
2.30 ERA. In 145 innings, he walked
just 29 and allowed only eight home
runs, while striking out 113.
This season, to the delight of Lan-
caster manager Butch Hobson and the
Barnstormers faithful, Pollok is re-
turning to anchor the Stormers staff.
He loves to compete, Hobson said
of the San Antonio native, who is pen-
ciled in as the opening day starter. He
loves to pitch. Hes a great guy and hes
a good clubhouse guy.
After pitching for the Barnstormers
last season, Pollok played in the Ven-
ezuelan Winter League where he was
7-2 with a 2.36 ERA, which resulted in
him also being named Pitcher of the
Year in that league.
Despite those accomplishments,
Polloks focus trumps frustration
nAfter a highly accomplished
2012, hes still waiting for an
affliated deal. But Lancasters
ace is ready to bring new knowl-
edge to the mound this season.

Pollok did not get a deal with an organiza-
tion affliated with major league baseball.
You would think especially after the
year last year and then what he did in
Venezuela (he would get a deal), Lan-
caster pitching coach Marty Janzen said.
The scouts, youd think would see him
in Venezuela. I dont understand it. Its the
politics of baseball. I guess if youre not
21 years old and throwing 95 (mph) ...
Pollok himself has taken it in stride.
It is what it is, he said. Its the game of
baseball. Theres a little bit of frustration
going on, but I just love playing the game.
So whoever gives me the shot to play, Im
going to go out there and do my best.
And whatever comes of it, Im going
to go out there and control what I can.
And whatever I cant control, thats in
somebody elses hands.
Polloks attitude and talent are wel-
comed back by the Barnstormers and
he has also added some knowledge this
winter in Venezuela.
Learning how to get those veteran hit-
ters out, was what he was doing. Youve
got to be really smart when you go out
to face those guys. And youve got to be
focusing on your game every time out.
So, I think going to winter ball like
that in the offseason has really prepared
me to come back to the states and per-
form well here.
Pollok, 32, played four seasons at
Texas A&M before being selected by the
White Sox in the 27th round of the 2003
draft.
He is 52-45 with a 4.01 ERA in 10
minor league seasons, 387 games. Pollok
saved 38 games for Class A Winston-Sa-
lem in 2004. He spent all or parts of four
seasons in Triple-A and has also pitched
in Mexico.
He considered pitching in Asia, but felt
that it would be easier to get an affliated
deal if he was in the states.
But until that call comes, he will pitch
for the Barnstormers.
Luckily theres a great team here in
Lancaster that gives me a chance to go
out and play and keep doing what I love to
do, he said.

hat more does Blake
Gailen have to accom-
plish to catch on with a
baseball team thats affli-
ated with a major league club?
Last year, playing for the Lancaster
Barnstormers, Gailen earned three
MVP awards.
The outfelder was voted the team
MVP by Barnstormers fans. After
hitting .338, he was named the Atlantic
League MVP, and he was chosen by
Baseball America as the Independent
Leagues Player of the Year.
Gailen, 28, was rewarded with a con-
tract from the Colorado Rockies. But
despite playing well this spring, he was
cut on the fnal day of the teams minor
league camp.
I was surprised to hear he got
released, Barnstormers batting coach
Lance Burkhart said. What else can he
do? Hes very good in the clubhouse. He
works hard. When you sign out of the
independent league, youre kind of play-
ing against a stacked deck.
Gailen himself is not bitter and
retains a positive attitude about the
situation.
They didnt have space (on the
roster), said the laid-back California
native, who is a cut-up off the feld,
keeping the locker room loose with
jokes and impressions. Unfortunately,
for a guy like myself, who they dont
have any money invested in, Im the one
who goes. Thats just the business.
Gailen, who hit 22 home runs (ffth
in the league) and had 89 RBIs (fourth
in the league) last season, is also not
discouraged.
I did well enough (in spring train-
ing) to have made a team, so it wasnt
about that, he said. They didnt send
me here (back to the Barnstormers)
because of my talent. They sent me
here because they literally did not have
a place for me.
So the Rockies loss is the Barn-
stormers gain, at least for now. This is
the best place for me, if Im in indepen-
dent ball, Gailen said.
Were glad to have Blake back,
Stormers skipper Butch Hobson said.
He a very good outfelder. You saw
what he did offensively. He has a good
approach at the plate. He takes what the
pitcher gives him and doesnt try and
do too much. And for someone his size,
(Gailen is 5-9) he has some pop.
And hes a very good outfelder
defensively, too.
Many times last season Gailen raced
into the left-feld corner to retrieve a
ball and hold the batter to a single, or
throw him out at second when he was
trying to stretch a single into a double.
Gailen, who played his college ball
at UNLV, also led a league in batting
in 2011, hitting an astonishing .406 for
Lincoln in the American Association.
That earned him 29 games at the end of
the season with Arkansas, the Dodgers
Double-A affliate.
Then last season he helped the Barn-
stormers come within a run of winning

the championship. Now, hes
back in Lancaster but hes
hopeful that what he did
earlier this spring with the
Rockies got noticed.
You never know who
saw you play, he said. You
especially hope the right
eyes in the Rockies organi-
zation saw you.
Or perhaps one of the
Rockies opponents will re-
member him when a player
gets hurt or moves up a level
and they need to fll a slot.
Its out of my control,
Gailen said. All I can do is
keep playing. If I dont play,
I wont be able to advance.
And Butch works to get guys
affliated deals. Theres a
pretty high turnover as far
as guys getting out of here.
In the meantime the
Barnstormers will appreci-
ate his talent even if other
teams do not.

ravis Denker is having fun
playing baseball again.
Denker joined the Lancast-
er Barnstormers last season
for the teams fnal 48 games, plus the
playoffs, and in the process rediscov-
ered the joy he got from the game
when he was younger. Oh, and he also
played really well for the Stormers.
Now hes back with the Barnstorm-
ers for the 2013 campaign, ready to
continue the excitement and success he
had in Lancaster last season.
My plan for this year is to just to
really enjoy or have fun every day,
Denker said.
In the past, when Denker played
in affliated ball, having fun was not a
priority. He was always checking the
depth chart, seeing who was in front of
him at the levels above his.
Now, with the independent Barn-
stormers, thats no longer a concern.
(Stormers skipper) Butch (Hobson)
puts together a team and says, Go out
and play and play to win, Denker
said. Nothing else matters. Thats
kind of what we all want. Old fashioned
baseball, almost.
Growing up, baseball was really the
only sport Denker played. That and,
surfng and skateboarding like every
other California kid, he said.
At 12 he found out he was good at
baseball when he was invited to join an
AAU travel team that participated in a
national tournament.
He also got instruction from a neigh-
bor, Chris Bironus, now a scout for the
Rangers. That led him to playing in a
league with other elite players. As a
result, he was selected by the Dodgers
in the 21st round of the 2003 draft.
Denker played in the Dodgers sys-
tem until he was traded to San Fran-
cisco in 2007. In 2008, he got the call
from the Giants asking him to report to
the majors.
It was amazing, he said of going to
the big leagues. It was a dream come
true. All that hard work leading up to
that. I wish I could still be there. But
God has a plan for me, (and) I feel like
(Lancaster) is where he wants me.

Jerry Owens, who hasnt played baseball since 2009, is glad to be back in the game with the Barnstormers.
BY BURT WILSON
Sports Writer
J
erry Owens wants to play baseball again.
The former major leaguer, who has not
played in over three years, nearly retired.
Now hungry to get back in the game, hes
making a comeback with the Lancaster Barn-
stormers.
I defnitely missed it, Owens said of his time away
from baseball. I missed playing. I missed the routine,
the camaraderie. I love the game. I can play a Sunday
day game and go home and watch Sunday night base-
ball.
Owens didnt take very long to show his teammates
he still had it. In the Barnstormers frst exhibition
game, Owens took off at the crack of the bat, racing
from his position in center feld to right-center to make
a diving catch to rob Camdens Eric Lis of an extra-
base hit.
When I saw that ball, I thought thats defnitely in
the gap, Barnstormers hitting coach Lance Burkhart
said. That was an unbelievable catch.
That kind of athleticism allowed Owens to excel in
sports growing up. He played football, baseball and
basketball through his sophomore year of high school
when he decided to give up baseball to concentrate
on the other two. His baseball coach told him, I think
youre making the biggest mistake of your life.
Owens was good enough as a wide receiver to earn
a football scholarship to UCLA, which is where he
learned about working hard and being mentally tough.
Growing up I was always the best and never had to
earn the job, he said. But now at college everybody
was the best player at their school and now were all
in the same room. I really learned how to deal with the
adversity of not necessarily being the guy.
And in college when youre 17 or 18 as a freshman,
youre going against 22-year-old seniors. Maturity-wise
those guys are men and Im still a kid. Ability-wise,
were all on the same playing feld. But mentally, they
were so far ahead of me. I had to grow up fast athleti-
cally from a mental standpoint.
And I had to learn how to work
hard, up at 5 a.m. running. My freshman
year at UCLA was integral in my career
because I had to learn how to just be an-
other guy. And how hard are you going
to work to get to the next level?
He played two seasons at UCLA,
when he decided he also wanted to play
baseball. He considered playing both
football and baseball for the Bruins. But
the coaches told him if he played both
sports, he probably would not get a pro
shot at either. And the baseball coach
could not guarantee any playing time
since he had not played in four years.
After a sprained ankle, the ffth in a
series of nagging injuries, kept him on
Somethings Bruin in the outf ield
nFleet-footed center felder Jerry Owens, a
former major leaguer and UCLA recruit, is a
new addition who brings speed to his position
and to the top of the Barnstormers batting
order.

Owens: Takes over in center f ield
the football sidelines, he left the game. He trans-
ferred and ended up playing baseball at the Mas-
ters School, a small Christian NAIA school in his
hometown of Santa Clarita, Calif.
Being a lefty, he thought he would pitch. But he
couldnt fnd the strike zone. The coach sent him to
center feld and hes been in the outfeld ever since.
His stats were good enough that he was drafted
by the Montreal Expos in 2003 and he played two
seasons in their system before being traded to the
Chicago White Sox.
In September of 2006, he made his debut in the
majors. I literally just started crying, he said of
the call from his agent telling him the White Sox
were putting him on their big league roster.
I called mom right away. I was so excited. Look-
ing back where I was when I was 18 and had a goal
of being in the NFL. Now, seven years later, Im
getting called to go to the major leagues. It was just
a crazy journey.
He played well in those games at the end of 06,
hitting .333 in the 12 contests. The next year, he was
a regular in the White Sox outfeld. In 93 games, he
hit .267 and stole 32 bases.
In the spring of 2008, when the center feld job
was his to lose, he injured his groin on the frst day
of camp. And later that spring, reinjured it. So he
rehabbed at Triple-A and spent the rest of the sea-
son there, except for a September call-up.
In 2009, he once again started the season at
Triple-A. He was called up in early April to fll in
for an injured Dewayne Wise. He played 12 games
before being released and signing with Seattle. He
hit .323 in 100 games for Tacoma, the Mariners
Triple-A affliate. But until he arrived in Lancaster,
it was the last time he played.
He missed the entire 2010 season when he hurt
his arm playing for Washington in spring training
and had surgery. He didnt get healthy until the
summer of 2011.
By that time things in his personal life had
changed. He married and had a daughter and was
living in Phoenix. He was considering settling down
and retiring from baseball.
But his relationship dissolved and he moved
back to California. Last summer, when he told a
friend, Im going to probably retire, the friend
responded, Why? Owens didnt have an answer.
Thats when he dedicated himself to getting back in
shape to play baseball again.
I was out of the game long enough to miss it
enough to have the drive to come back, he said.
But while I was out, I got to rehab and raise my
daughter from the time she was born. So, it was a
blessing both ways.
Now, hes a Barnstormer. Hes a very good cen-
ter felder, Lancaster manager Butch Hobson said.
A big part of his game is bunting. Hes going
to be big for us at the top of the lineup. Hell get on
base. Hes got a good eye at the plate. And hes still
fast.
But the biggest thing is, hes got the desire to
play again.

GOOD LUCK BARNSTORMERS!
16 APRIL 16, 2013 BARNSTORMERS 2013 Lancaster, Pa
frst at-bat, he was nearly hit by a pitch
thrown by Matt Herges. His frst hit
came off Mark Hendrickson in Miami;
A broken-bat double down the line,
he recalled.
And his frst home run came off
lefty Scott Schoenweis on an 0-2,
back-door slider. Unfortunately, it was
his only home run. He was in the bigs
for a total of 24 games. He hit .243 in 37
at-bats.
Sent back to the minors by the Gi-
ants, he has since played in the Red
Sox, Padres and Mariners systems.
Last season after playing 64 games
back in the Dodgers organization at
Double-A Chattanooga, he was re-
leased. Thats when the Barnstormers
welcomed him to Lancaster and its
been a mutual lovefest since.
Its a great place to play, Denker
said. I had a great time (last season,
and) I actually fell in love with baseball
again.
In 175 at-bats, Denker hit .297 last
season for the Barnstormers with 11
homers, 15 doubles and 35 RBIs.
Were really happy to have Travis
back, Hobson said. He was tremen-
dous for us last year.
Denkers postseason was even
better than his regular season for the
Barnstormers.
He had two or more hits in seven
of the eight playoff games, batted .515
with four homers and tied a league
record with 12 RBIs.
He has good at-bats, Hobson said.
Hes a very aggressive hitter, very
aggressive swinger. Hes going to give
us that power bat and hell be a .290 to
.300-plus hitter.
And hes versatile in the feld, play-
ing third, second and frst last season
for Lancaster.
And despite the fact that he is an
ex-major leaguer, Denker still works
hard. I think his attitude is what
makes him good, hitting coach Lance
Burkhart said. Every day he comes to
the feld, he knows what he needs to do
and he gets his work done.
Denker is not sure how much longer
he will play but he is making sure that
this season he will take the time to
enjoy the game and the camaraderie of
his teammates.
My wife is letting me play so Im
just going to keep going as long as I
can, Denker said. Im just trying to
do my best here and if I can get picked
up, that would be a blessing. If not Im
just going to enjoy my time here and
just get better.
The Barnstormers already think
hes good enough and are happy to
have him in Lancaster.

Outfeld
Besides Gailen, who led the Atlantic
League with a .338 average last season,
the outfeld will have Joe Mather, who
spent all of last season with the Chicago
Cubs and was in spring training this
season with the Phillies;
Ryan Harvey, the man known for his
monster home runs, was second in the
league last season with 27;
And former Chicago White Sox
speedster Jerry Owens, who is making
a comeback after not playing for three
seasons, will play center and lead off.
We have speed, we have power,
Hobson said. We have guys who can get
on base and guys who can hit the long
ball. And were going to be pretty good
on defense.
Pitchers
On the mound, the right-hander Pol-
lok returns to anchor the starting rota-
tion. Righties Jay Buente, Will Savage
and Alan Johnson, who is back from last
years staff, and lefty Lenny DiNardo
are the other
starters, Hobson
said.
The manager
said that initially,
the Barnstorm-
ers will close by
committee.
Weve got the
versatility to be
able to do that,
even mixing and
matching in the
ninth inning,
until someone
shows me he deserves to be the closer,
Hobson said.
Hobson mentioned Yoslan Herrera,
Jhonny Montoya, Robert Hinton, Jason
Urquidez, Derrick Loop, Tim Dillard
and Eric Wordekemper as possible late-
inning guys.
In the middle innings he will count on
Brain Grening, Jason Richardson, Brian
Tallet and possibly Nate Reed, a young
pitcher from the Reading area who im-
pressed in spring training. He said Ross
Peeples, the only inaugural member of
the Barnstormers still with the team,
could fll any role needed.
McCaskey product and former major
leaguer John Parrish is with the Barn-
stormers and will
be added to the
roster at some
point but will not
be ready by open-
ing day. Parrish is
rehabbing from
shoulder surgery.
I like what
weve assem-
bled, Hobson
said of the pitch-
ing staff, and
the things that we
can do with that.
Theyre experienced guys and 98 per-
cent of the time theyre strike throwers.
I like guys that pound the strikes zone. I
dont care how many hits they give up.
Walk, walk, three-run bomb, thats not
good. Solo bombs, thats OK. Thats going
to happen.
Catchers
Petey Paramore has excelled han-
dling the catching duties all spring. Fran-
cisco Hernandez, who returns
from last season, was to be
the starter but he has been
stuck in his native Dominican
Republic with visa issues.
Both are switch hitters and
both will see a lot of playing
time.
Bench
Aaron King, who is con-
verting from a pitcher to an
outfelder, Japanese infelder
Tsuyoshi Takashima and Jeff
Lundell were competing for utility roles.
I dont want to say were stacked,
Hobson said. I think were a good, solid
veteran club.
The team, at least on paper, looks
poised to contend. But this is not the
Barnstormers team that will be here
at the end of the season. Players leave
when they get signed by affliated teams,
others get hurt, and still others wont
perform as expected. So the goal is to
get off to the best start and get the most
wins possible while this team is intact.
After that, the key to the season,
the key to every season in the Atlantic
League, is how good are the replace-
ments and how quickly do they arrive?
But Hobson is very good at flling
those vacancies. He has good connec-
tions and players want to play for him.
I heard from a ton of people (that)
Lancaster is the place to be and Butch is
the guy to be playing for, Owens said.
His goal is to get us out of here (and
back to affliated ball). But he also wants
to win. So this is the team Im on now. I
play for Butch and I play for the Barn-
stormers.
My goal every single day I walk in
here is to be the best player I can be for
this team.
Most of Hobsons players have that at-
titude, and because of it, this may be the
year the championship trophy returns to
Lancaster.
