INQUIRERS CLASS FOR NEWCOMERS AND LONGTIME MEMBERS

BY JON HALL Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, The first three Monday evenings in May will be a great time to learn about the Episcopal Church and how our Christian faith meets our real world. The Rev. Emily Hillquist Davis and I will lead this Inquirers Class for newcomers and longtime members alike whether you are curious to know more about the Church or looking for a refresher course for your faith. We are encouraging this group to enjoy this gathering as an opportunity to get to know others who have been attending St. Martins in the past year. We will begin each evening with an informal dinner. There will be no charge for dinner and there are no materials to purchase before classes. May 6, Monday, Monday 6-7:30pm (The Episcopal Church) * An overview of the history and governance of The Episcopal Church. * What Episcopalians believe to be core values of the Anglican faith in the Catechism on BCP p. 843, the Nicene and Apostolic Creeds, and the 39 Articles of Religion on BCP p. 867 and how these have shaped our faith. May 13, Monday, Monday 6-7:30pm (Spirituality & The Book of Common Prayer) * Theologically, Anglicans understand that Gods grace is recognized and celebrated during times of devotion, corporate worship, and ongoing discipleship. The Book of Common Prayer (BCP) contains wonderful scripture, offices or prayers for individual or group use, and pastoral services for the life of the community. * Episcopalians are people of the book with the Bible as a prominent scriptural resource and the BCP as our helpful liturgical resource. May 20, Monday, Monday 6-7:30pm (Living Faithfully in the Real World) * How do we learn to see others as God sees? An 18th century priest, William Law, talked about this in terms of the process of Christ and is open to us for the duration of our life. * So what now? How does scripture, practices of the Christian community, and life-long formation continue to shape our faith and service to God and to one another?
Contact the Rev. Jon Hall at jhall@stmartinschurch.org

UNITED THANK OFFERING

BY LAURIE ANN FLORY St. Martins Spring UTO Ingathering will be Sunday, May 5, 2013. The United Thank Offering, or UTO, has been a financial partner in the mission work of the Episcopal Church since 1889. Through the decades the United Thank Offering has expanded with changing leadership and expectations. Through prayer and thankful giving of our gifts, we reach out into the world. It is a part of our heritage and an important part of the Episcopal Church history. The money collected supports missions and ministries, domestically and internationally. Just a few examples of UTO grants in recent years have included solar power for an African orphanage and medical clinic, a community tractor for sustainable food production, camps for children of incarcerated parents, musical instruments for music appreciation in rural communities, a playground for children with special needs, and a sewing program for vocational training. The mission statement of UTO is Put gifts into the Blue Box with thanksgiving, prayer, and generosity; take blessings out of the box for grants extending the churchs faithfulness to Gods mission. On the day of Ingathering, our donations, mostly in the form of coin-filled Blue Boxes will be collected and blessed. If you havent done so, please pick up a Blue Box located in Park Hall. The Blue Box can serve as a daily opportunity to give thanks to God. Keeping the Blue Box out on the kitchen table can be a gentle reminder to be thankful. For me, sometimes the remembering (even with phone alerts and calendars) can be difficult in our busy lives! The important things, like taking time to be thankful, can easily be overlooked. Just like my children, I have days when I could use a reminder to be more thankful. Therefore, I have devised a plan to motivate myself: Families with young children might be familiar with the story, Elf on the Shelf. This story comes to life in many homes around Christmastime. An elf doll reports back to Santa each night and magically perches himself or herself in a new spot each morning. Each morning for a month the children were delighted to search for our Elf Lollipop. Perhaps as parents, no magic involved, we can move the Blue Box around each evening for a month leading up to Ascension Sunday and let the children search for it in the morning. There is great joy in sharing thankfulness with our childrenand in turn helping others through simple coin donations! As written on the UTO website: http://www.episcopalchurch.org/uto, Those who participate in UTO discover that thankfulness leads to generosity.
th There will be a Blue Box collection bin in the lobby, Remember to bring your Blue Boxes to church Sunday, May 5th. for a period of time after the Ingathering. Also, if you prefer to write a check then please make it payable to Saint Martins Episcopal Church. Thank you!

PROJECT LINUS
Did you know that Project Linus, named for the Charles M. Schulz character, has an active Chapter here at St. Martins? These blanketeers as volunteers are known provide new, homemade blankets to seriously ill or traumatized children. For more information contact Susan Merchak or Sherrie Algren.

THE ROCK
BY SHANNON SIRUR The Rock came together March 3 for some good food, good company and FUN! We spent a good portion of the time playing a game called Wallyball! This game is like volley ball but with a cool twist. The point of the game was to get some exercise and get our hearts pumping, but it turned out to be an exercise in working together, listening to each other and giving positive feedback to one another. We learned that you get as much as you give. The same is true in life but also with the Lord. We will be playing that game again and again. IT WAS A BLAST! We then went down to the Nursery where we all did some creative brainstorming on what the students thought that room should look and feel like when kids arrive. The Nursery will be one of our service projects we hope to start this summer. Everyone had a ton of wonderful ideas. If you have any ideas please send them to ssirur@stmartinschurch.org. Thank you as always for the dedicated parents of St. Martins who continue to make this ministry a priority in their daily lives!

LIVE AT THE 505.

BY EMILY HILLQUIST DAVIS L IVE AT THE 5 O 5 Music on 3 Saturday Evenings in April at our 5 :o5 PM Eucharist April 13 Tibetan Singing Prayer Bowls played by Lura Koch April 20 & 27 Hymns accompanied on guitar by the Rev. Brooke Myers who will also celebrate Eucharist while Rev. Emily goes on pilgrimage to the Isle of Iona off Scotland. Easter season brings new opportunities for our Saturday Evening Worship. On April 13 th, Meditation Musician Lura Koch returns weaving the soul-stirring music of her Tibetan Prayer Bowls throughout the 5 05 . The singing bowls evocatively underscore the emotional content of spoken passages, and draw out, for example, the drama of the Gospel or the Communion Prayer. Come on April 13 th and let these healing tones resonate in your heart and soul. The Rev. Brooke Myers, Rector of Holy Communion in University City, has set our entire hymnal to chords for guitar accompaniment and regularly leads music at our Diocesan clergy gatherings. Brooke always makes it easy to sing. His hymn selections often delight me & broaden my appreciation of our hymnody. I sure regret missing this opportunity to worship with Brooke at my favorite service. He will be leading music and celebrating the Eucharist at the 5 o5 PM Saturday Evening Alternative Worship on the 2 last Saturdays of April when I will be far away. If you like to sing and are open to participating in worship less formal than on Sunday mornings, give the 5 o5 a shot on April 20 & 27. Yours by the grace & power of our Lord Christ,

BY BEVERLY KINKADE End of Life Issues Should Not be a Guessing Game!

(assisting priest)

No one in their rational mind would dwell on the fact that we could die any minute, of any hour, any day. We predominantly think that the world around us can be controlled and risk eliminated, fate mastered. Where is God in that type of thinking?? The facts are, according to AARP, that 60% of Americans die without leaving a will or any document to convey their instructions. During this annual time of reflection, starting with Ash Wednesday however, we ponder the sobering words, Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust. These words are not meant to scare us, but to prepare us. In some ways, the positive attitudes above can work to our disadvantage. We are surrounded with media messages of rising life expectancies, medical improvements, guides of prosperity. But we live in a bubble of self-deception. Lets pray to God that we all live healthy and prosperous lives, but the truth is we need to Prepare Our Way to Zion, and there is no better time to do this then when we are well, cognitively and physically. Dont be one of the 60%. Let your church help you.

BOOK CLUB DESTINY OF THE REPUBLIC

BY RUBY DOWNS Book Club will meet on Tuesday, April 23, from 7:008:30 in Packwood Library to discuss Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard. Obtain a copy of the novel and come join the discussion. Newcomers are always welcome! Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard The extraordinary New York Times-bestselling account of James Garfield's rise from poverty to the American presidency, and the dramatic history of his assassination and legacy, from bestselling author of The River of Doubt, Candice Millard. For a man forced into the presidency, the legacy of James Garfield extended far beyond his lifetime, Future book selections are: May 28 - Dreamers of the Day by Mary Doria Russell and Destiny of the Republic revisits his meteoric rise within the military and government with meticulous research and intimate focus.

Garfield was a passionate advocate of freed slaves, a reformer at odds with RepubliJune 25 - The can power brokers and maUnlikely Pilgrimage chine politics, a devoted faof Harold Fry ther, and a spellbinding by Rachel Joyce speech-giver. Four months after taking office he was shot twice by an unhinged officeseeker, Charles Guiteau, and a nation already recently fractured by war shattered, leaving the wounded president at the center of a bitter, behind-the-scenes struggle for power. Examining the medical reform spurred by Garfield's unsanitary medical treatment, and reflecting on the surprising political reform brought on by his former political enemy Senator Roscoe Conkling, Destiny of the Republic passionately brings President Garfield's unknown-but-widely-felt legacy into focus.

Camp Phoenix
BY WALKER TRIESCHMANN I loved Camp Phoenix because we got to hang out with people our age for a whole week and do some fun stuff like swimming, horseback riding, archery, team building, and activity groups. At night we went to our cabins to settle down and finally sleep. A random schedule at camp would be wake up, breakfast at 7:30am, archery, team building, horseback riding, lunch at 1:00pm, then activity groups, swimming, prayers, dinner at 7:00pm, campfire, then finally bed. My favorite activity would be campfire because we get to sing and dance with the camp staff (who are awesome!) and counselors (also awesome!). We also have a prayer in between some songs. Another thing that I like about camp is the food! The favorite food that I had at Camp Phoenix would be the chicken burger. At meals we would say a prayer then start getting food and eating. When a bell chimed we could get seconds or thirds (if there was enough). For more information, check out their website at campphoenix@DioceseMo.org.

THANK YOU
Due to a failure of the sump pump in the unfinished basement on Tuesday, there was standing water across the floor in that area. Fortunately, most items were stored on shelves or pallets as it is not uncommon for water to seep in during heavy rains. There were some things on the floor plus area rugs and furniture. Once the sump pump was replaced, there was still a lot of water to move to the drain. Clem Brooke, the Junior Warden, who oversees the building plant, and Lincoln Drake of the Facilities Committee worked all afternoon to mitigate damage and remove water. As word got out people began arriving to help with the great mop up. Thanks to John Lange, Scott Pattengill, Bob Ecker, Alan Esper, Kay Fletcher, Rich Brown, and Greg Andersen as well as Lincoln Drake and Clem Brooke for dropping everything to respond to this emergency.
