The Importance of MAFA

MAFA for me stands for so much more than just a coalition of schools in the Midwest. It is the embodiment of maintaining and effectively communicating the Filipino culture here in the Midwest. As the Midwest, we are already at a disadvantage because of the number of Filipinos in our vicinity in comparison to the East and West coast. However after my last three years of experiencing MAFA and all it has to offer, I have realized that numbers do not matter. What matters most is the dedication, time, and passion a person has to put forth in preserving and maintaining the Filipino culture here in the Midwest. Being born in the Philippines and coming to the United States as a baby has put me in an interesting predicament, and has made me re-evaluate my personal connection to the culture. When Filipinos from the Philippines ask me where I am from, I tell them I was born in the Philippines, but raised here in the States since I was barely a year old. They would respond with, Oh youre basically an American then. Whenever this happens I always tell them that it doesnt matter where you are born or how long you have lived in a particular location; so long as you live the culture and lifestyles of your heritage. MAFA is a perfect example of that concept. It is an organization that resides in the Midwest made up of 19 colleges/universities. Each school being a part of the whole and trying to do just that, maintain and preserve the Filipino heritage in the United States. It takes dedication to continually run and organize events to expose the Filipino culture for the public. Dedication for the schools E-Board to continually communicate with each other and other schools of the Midwest to better improve the Filipino Culture here in the Midwest. I personally admire the time, dedication, and passion for the schools that try to go to each others events. For example the actual MAFA conference, Battle of the Bamboo, and or Philippine Culture Nights, though the location for these events varied in distance for schools, it always amazes me as to who you see there. When I was a freshman at the MAFA conference in Ohio State I met people from all over the Midwest that I never knew would dedicate the time to travel. There would people from Minnesota, St. Louis, Illinois to name a few. I had so much respect for their boards and their members for taking the initiative to travel the distance. MAFA for me is a unifier for everyone with a Filipino background to come as one, and events such as those were the glue to bring everyone together.

Finally MAFA for me is something that goes beyond any tangible object. It represents friendships and lifetime bonding. The networking that goes on within this organization is phenomenal. It is hard to imagine that someone you barely knew a year ago, can potentially be one of the most important and influential people in your life. The MAFA family concept and goal was truly a brilliant idea. It is the epitome of networking and getting to know someone at a more in depth level. It also gave those who didnt have brothers and sisters growing up someone to call kuya or ate. Moreover, the people in this mini MAFA organization became people you could truly trust and relate with the Filipino culture. MAFA has been one organization that has been amazing at exposing the passion people in the Midwest have for their Filipino Culture. It is still around today because it has been successful thus far. Hopefully it continues on this strong precedent to further expose the Filipino culture to more people in the future. It would be a great honor to be a part of this fantastic organization. Making friends that will last a lifetime, knowing you are making a difference in your Filipino Organization, and most importantly making the motherland proud that we as a group of Filipino Americans are preserving our heritage in a country such as the United States. For me MAFA is home away from home. No matter where you are or whom you are with, you will always be around those who share similar aspirations and background as you.

Communication V. Effective Communication

I believe there is a clear difference between a good outreach chair and a great outreach chair. Communication is vital to the success of MAFA and how it operates. Because MAFA is involved with most of the states in the Midwest, communication is needed to maintain this healthy relationship between schools. Just like in any relationship, communication is key to maintaining this bond between two people. This metaphor is ideal at trying to distinguish the differences in communication and effective communication. Although both require a sender to place a message to a receiver, there can be differences as to how the message is interpreted/received. Communication is the mere process of sending a message or signal to a person in hopes of getting a response. This would be the typical role of an outreach chair; simply passing along a message to a respective

MAFA school. A great outreach chair with effective communication will tell, explain, demonstrate, and inspire others. Its not hard to send a message to someone and expecting a response, however its another thing when the sender leave little to no room for misinterpretations. An example of communication in a relationship would be, Im coming to picking you up at 7 and I might be late. Little did the receiver of this message know that the sender had errands to run beforehand and bit off more than he could chew. Therefore, when this person arrived to pick up his girlfriend at 7 it was already 8 and an argument breaks out. Lack off communication and not informing the receiver of other commitments led to this argument. Similarly for MAFA or in your particular Filipino Org, hypothetically if youre planning for a huge event there leaves little room for error. Money plays a big factor in these events and knowing how to utilize and budget the funds is key to getting the most bang for your buck. If an e-board merely told the organization, We have a thousand dollars worth of funding for this culture night. Do what you think is necessary to in order to have the best PCN we can possibly have! This leaves such a high margin for error and misinterpretation. An effective communicator would instead say, Listen up Org. We have a thousand dollars to spend for this Philippine Culture night. We need to budget and spend this money wisely because it is the remaining funds we have for the rest of the semester. Furthermore we already have some of the items on this list that should not be bought. We need to utilize these funds where its most cost effective and where we will get the most bang for our buck! We need to get this done within a week! I know itll be difficult, but in the end it will be worth it. Now if you have any questions and or doubts please do not hesitate to ask the board because we want this to be as successful as it can be. In that response it addresses how the money will be spent, what not to spend it on, when to get all the supplies in by, and provides a constraint and sense of urgency for the group. No one is perfect so the person also addresses that if there are any questions or doubts that the group should not be afraid to speak up and question. This will inspire the group to speak up for themselves and question the authority of the e-board. In order to have effective communication amongst a group of people, there needs to be a sense of mutual understanding. Therefore leaving room for questions to solve misinterpretations is key for getting those who are afraid to speak up to finally open to the group. Effective communication is crucial in MAFA. Making sure a message is sent successfully with little

room for doubt is needed in order to have a healthy relationship with the 19 schools. Being in college is no small accomplishment. It requires dedication and time management. Moreover, everyone is caught up in his or her own little bubble and activities. Making the most of everyones time and efforts is needed in order to get the maximum output in meetings. Effective communication goes a long way in passing the desired information. Finally effective communication alleviates any chance of misunderstandings and errors that may rise between sender and receiver. How to improve communication between schools Currently there are 19 schools that are active in MAFA. Each school varies in how involved they are and this reflects how involved their representatives are as MAFA reps. Understanding how the situation stands is important and it will guide how to approach this matter. Each person involved in MAFA as his or her own schedule that can vary from activity to activity. Therefore it is crucial to understand that having daily check ups and messages from them will be nearly impossible. Being realistic is important when tackling this kind of issue because if the solution is unreasonable, then no one will want to participate in the fix. Setting a certain time and date ahead of time will help others plan for the deadline. Being a MAFA rep is just as important as being part of the MAFA e-board because in extension they are the MAFA leader in each school. Therefore in order to build a better relationship with the Philippine organizations and MAFA board, there must be effective communication with their MAFA representative. I also believe it is vital to get an idea of what each persons schedule is like. Each MAFA representative will have different times of day where they are free, I think if we can compile a chart or weekly/monthly schedule with MAFA rep availability it will enhance the communication the board will have with each school. We can better plan when to meet with the reps and it will also provide a time constrain for how much time we have to speak with them. In terms of communication I believe having a discussion board, thread, or Google hangouts will improve the communication between MAFA reps and the e-board. At least with this since everyone is so scattered across the Midwest, we will have the opportunity to recognize how everything is going amongst their organization and if they have any advice or concerns for the MAFA group. That way the board will stay in

touch with each school and also it will leave a window of opportunity gain a closer relationship with each representative. I believe that one must be open and readily available for questions/concerns in order to have a good relationship among the MAFA reps. If there are issues or questions looming in their minds, its best to try and understand their situation and use correct language when addressing their woes. Nothing is worse than misinterpreting their doubts and approaching them with malice and tenacity. Instead let them vent whats on their mind and then clear up any doubt that is still present. From there at least there is an understanding between sender and receiver; harking on the concept of effective communication.
