UNIT 49: Developing Movement Skills

Name: Shannon Mowat Student Number: S120682 Submission date: 20th November

What is Dance?

DANCE

Dance is a collection of strategic movements of the body with or without a partner(s).

THE DANCER

Skills and qualities

I believe that a dancer should be confident, healthy, flexible and have a good memory in order to perform to the best of their ability.

Preparing to Dance Why warm-up?

There are three main reasons why we warm up. The first is to increase heart rate to get oxygen to the muscles quicker, you can do this by jogging round the room. To prevent injurys such as the pulling or tearing of a muscle, this can be done by performing either a static or dynamic stretch. The last reason we warm up is to get you mentally prepared which may help to increase your ability to remember steps and also improves coordination

Why cool down?

The three main reasons we cool down are to lower the amount of lactic acid the build up in the muscles from exersion. To ensure your body gets back to its resting heart rate. Finally to prevent any achy muscles or joints that may have been strained in the sport.

What to wear?
The clothes you are advised to wear clothes that dont constrict movement such as leggings, tracksuit bottoms or a T-Shirt. You may also be advised to take out all jewlellrey to ensure that it doesnt catch on any other students and cause injury.

Learning to Dance Planning a programme for skills development

Choose one area which you would like to improve and write a plan to achieve this:

Aim/Objective: Being more enthusiastic towards my performance and making sure I put all my effort into every lesson.
Steps you will take to achieve this: Have a more positive outlook on lessons and try to get on with work to the best of my ability without making as many complaints.

Action plan: - Get more sleep. - try to have a healthier diet. - Always be prepared. - Set my self earlier deadlines for work to avoid it piling up and causing stress.

Date completed:

Describe each one and give an example of each one in your own dance:

Travel

Travelling is transferring the the body height or placement using a range of different movements. E.g Stepping or Sliding.

Turn
Rotating the entire body either a quarter, half, or fully. This can also be performed as ajump.

Transfer of weight
Moving the weight from one part of the body to another. E.g Going from a standing to leaning over on one leg.

Gesture
A body movement that potrays a concept or mood.

Stillness
A motionless pose usually chreographed at the start or end of a sequence. Also people who are on stage but not dancing have to maintain a pose to ensure the focus is on the people dancing not on the people in the background.

Jump
Pushing the body into the air in an upward motion. There are many different way to jump these are; 2 feet to 2 feet, 2 feet to 1 foot, 1 foot to 2 feet and 1 foot to 1 foot.

Which dynamics did you use in your dance and what was the effect?
In my dance I was paired with Amy and we were fighting over a pen. We choreagraphed it so that we used aggressive and violent movements in order to make the sequence to look more believeable. It also helps engage our audience so they are more compelled to continue watching. We had to be careful whilst doing this as even though the moves where meant to be agressive we had to ensure that it still looked like a dance that had cohesion and believeability.

Describe your travel sequence

In our performance me and Amy walked to a point then transferred body weight to our knees as we 'struggled' on the floor. Throughout to performance body weight was transferred from person to person too, buy having either Amy leaning over me and vice versa.

Describe how you used the choreographic devices above in your own composition.
We used several of these dynamics, such as action as we fought for the mystery coveted item in the form of a pen. Levels as we had a section of elegant leg work on the floor and one being down on the floor and the other higher up above them as the finishing pose. Also the leg work explained above was in unison.

What do we need to think about when performing?

A performer should be thinking about what moves come next and how, if performing while in practice how certain moves can be improved and/or developed. The performer also needs to keep in mind space between the other performers or making sure they are utilising all the space that is available to them.

Observe the video of your performance. Read the following grade descriptors and grade yourself accordingly: P=Needs improvement, M= Developing and D= Accomplished. Then give reasons for the grade that you have awarded yourself.
