Conference Log Student Name: Adam Culp Conference 1 (Individual Conference) Time: 10:40-11:00

Date: January 28th, 2013

Conversation Notes: Student stated that he is a transfer student from community college. He is undecided in his major In his former College, he did reflective writing, research writing, compare/contrast, & persuasion He stated that personally, he is more inclined towards creative writing. When writing, he said he has trouble picking topic, and that his lack of planning makes it difficult for him to create clear narratives. In the past, he was taught a few ways to plan, such as outlines and bubble maps. He also has engaged with process oriented writing a bit, but does not have much experience creating multiple drafts. As for his own writing process, he stated that he does not have any specific practices that he can think of which define his working process. In terms of his inquiry route for this class, he is interested in physical fitness, the medias impact on health and wellness, and supplements. When re-reading the reflection he wrote, he indicated that he was uncertain about the specific questions that are driving his interests in these topics.

My Response & Suggestions: At the end of our conference, Adam and I decided that our initial efforts to work on his skill as a writer begins with examining his writing process in more depth. My initial recommendation is to keep a log of what he does when he writes and how long he spends writing. I also suggested that his work may benefit from the using an outline to gather and organize his ideas and that if he identified his purpose for writing more clearly, the writing will probably have more focus. Since the reflection on inquiry topics did not allow him to pick one clear topic, I have asked Adam to follow up with me via email in 48 hours to indicate the topic he is most interested in. To conclude the meeting, I suggested that we should meet again after he completes his next draft in order to assess his writing process and create more specific goals to improve his writing.

Conference Log Student Name: Alyssa Molina Conference 1 (Individual Conference) Time: 2:00-2:20

Date: January 30, 2013

Conversation Notes: She is a pre- nursing major. Stated that she took 1101 at UNCC and is familiar with our curriculum, our engagement with process oriented practices, and portfolio based assessment. In her 1101, she write reflections, a This I Believe essay, a lit. narrative, and an ethnography. She stated that her favorite type of writing to do is analytical writing. As a writer, she wants to expand word choice, increase her sense of audience awareness, improve narrative structure, reduce repetition, and improve conclusions. For her writing process, she stated that she talks about her writing with other to develop ideas and usually jumps around to develop different parts of her paper as she is writing it. While she begins writing assignments well in advance, she tends to revise while writing. Possible inquiry topics for this class include: Does the government have the right to regulate our consumption habits; How do we teach wellness in schools; How does the media shape our perception of wellness; How is food regulated.

My Response & Suggestions: At the end of our conference, Alyssa and I decided that one of her main struggles as a writer is her lack of focus when planning, as well as the topical jumpiness of her narrative. We decided that one solution may be to create a more focused writing process that involves clearly identifying her purpose and the discussion points she wants to address to pursue her purpose. When discussing her reflection, we concluded that food regulation was the topic driving her interests the most. I advised that she begin looking into this topic more by focusing on one aspects of the food industry, such as the processed food or meat industry. To conclude, I asked Alyssa to follow up with me next week to see what she learned about food regulations and what types of questions her research raised for her.

Conference Log Student Name: Precious Sheff Conference 1 (Individual Conference) Time: 9:20-940

Date: January 31st, 2013

Conversation Notes: Precious is a transfer student who took 1101 at another University. She is majoring in psychology major with a minor in urban youth In her former writing course, she said that she did what she called documentation writing (annotated bibs?), reflective and creative narratives, POV essay, research. In her writing process for this essay, she said that she thought and wrote one paragraph at a time and called a friend after composing each paragraph. She revises her work before submitting it. She likes to listen to music while working (classical). As a writer, she wants to improve at narrative structure. She feels that her ideas a good, but the topics jump around a lot. She was also concerned about the level of formality, but after reading her reflection, we noted the academic tone that was used throughout the piece. For her inquiry project, topics of interest include: organic food, food competitions, bottled water, pharmaceutical drugs, food production, and fast food. She expressed a strong interests in the side effects of drugs/drug testing/ drug regular/FDA regulation,. In the conclusion of our meeting, Precious decided that her inquiry focus will be on FDA regulations of pharmaceutical drugs. My Response & Suggestions: Precious and I noted that she has a very through writing process she takes notes on her ideas, writes in phases, dialogues with others about her work, and revises often. That said, we both decided that her writing did seem a bit disorganized at times, and jumped around topically. As of now, topical organization and incorporating transitions to connect ideas is something she should strive to improve. I also recommend changing her approach to planning a bit so that she is able to visual the narrative as a whole rather than planning one paragraph at a time. I suggested that Precious being exploring some of the issues surrounding FDA regulation policies, laws, safety testing, labeling, etc. This will help her formulate more questions.
