Group 7 RUSSIA History of Russia: was also alternatively called the "Russian Federation".

Russia is the largest country in the world, covering more than one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area. Russia is also the world's ninth most populous nation with 143 million people as of 2012. The name Russia is derived from Rus, a medieval state populated mostly by the East Slavs. However, this proper name became more prominent in the later history, and the country typically was called by its inhabitants which could be translated as "Russian Land" or "Land of Russia. Culture There are over 160 different ethnic groups and indigenous peoples in Russia. Language: Russia's 160 ethnic groups speak some 100 languages. Russian is the only official state language, but the Constitution gives the individual republics the right to make their native language official in addition to Russian.[210] Russian is one of the six official languages of the UN.[ Religion: Orthodox Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Buddhism are Russia's traditional religions, and are all legally a part of Russia's "historical heritage".[214] The Russian Orthodox Church was the country's state religion prior to the Revolution. It remains the largest religious body in the country. Estimates on how many believers the church has fluctuate widely in different sources. Health: The Russian Constitution guarantees free, universal health care for all its citizens.[223] In practice, however, free health care is partially restricted due to mandatory registration.[224] While Russia has more physicians, hospitals, and health care workers than almost any other country in the world. The health of the Russian people has deteriorated dramatically since the fall of communism, due particularly to cardiovascular disease.

As of 2009, the average life expectancy in Russia was 62.77 years for males and 74.67 years for females.[227] The biggest factor contributing to the relatively low life expectancy for males is a high mortality rate among working-age males. Deaths mostly occur due to preventable causes (e.g., alcohol poisoning, smoking, traffic accidents, violent crime Major Health Issues: -Smoking Russia is the world leader in smoking. According to a survey reported in 2010 by Russias Health and Social Development Ministry, 43.9 million adults in Russia are smokers. Among Russians aged 19 to 44 years of age. - Alcohol consumption Alcohol consumption and Alcoholism are major problems in Russia. It is estimated that Russians drink 15 litres (26 pints) of pure alcohol each year. - HIV/AIDS HIV/AIDS, virtually non-existent in the Soviet era, rapidly spread following the collapse, mainly through the explosive growth of intravenous drug use.[18] According to a 2008 report by UNAIDS, the HIV epidemic in Russia continues to grow, but at a slower pace than in the late 1990s.

- Suicide Russia has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, although it has been steadily decreasing since it peaked at around 40 per 100,000 in the mid-late 90s. In 2007 about 22% of all suicides were committed by people aged 4049, and almost six times as many Russian males commit suicide than females. HEALTH SYSTEM: The Russian health care system is massive, with many more physicians, many more and larger hospitals, and many more health care workers than almost any other country in the world. Inherited from the Soviet Union, the Russian Federation was faced with a legacy of guarantees for a wide range of social services, including citizens right to free medical services. The guarantee of a full range of free healthcare services has not changed with independence, but rather has been confirmed through the new Russian Constitution and the new healthcare financing law.

Hospitals / Healthcare providers

There are a number of different types of hospitals and healthcare clinics in use. They include:

Rural Health Posts These offer basic health checks and facilities including routine examinations, immunizations and minor injuries. They cover a population of about 4,000 people. Health Centres These cover larger rural populations of approximately 7,000 people and offer a range of primary care services. They are able to perform minor surgeries and are normally staffed by a team of nurses in conjunction with a paediatrician, a therapist and a midwife/gynaecologist. Urban Polyclinics These provide services which are normally considered general practice and include screening, treatment for chronic illnesses and on-going care. Depending on their size, urban polyclinics would also house approximately 3-4 specialists from fields such as cardio, oncology and obstetrics. Special Focus Polyclinics This is where paediatricians and specialist ambulatory paediatric care treat children up to the age of 19.

ISSUES SURROUNDING: The Crisis of Russian Health Care and Attempts at Reform The crisis in Russia's health care system has continued for a number of years. Despite the large number of hospitals and a huge army of medical doctors, they been unable to provide people with an acceptable level of health care services. This is mainly due to a continued lack of funds, medical and technical equipment and supplies, and, finally, to the ineffective organization of health care delivery services. As a result, the quality of services and their accessibility remains quite low. The Health Care Financing Crisis Under present conditions of economic crisis, most medical facilities have given the highest priority to problems of lack of finances and financial instability. The initial reforms liberalized economic relationships and placed the health care system in a market environment. Fee-for-Service Financing It is dangerous to overestimate the likely desire of the population for charged services. The demand for high quality services is not yet formulated, and family budgets are already heavily stressed by other financial pressures
