7FDL Engines power over 15,000 locomotives around the world

GE has been designing and building high horsepower, diesel-electric locomotives for over 30 years. We know the demands placed on engines used in locomotive service better than any other engine maker. The proof is in the 7FDL engine.
The 7FDL Engine is a high-compression, four-stroke, medium-speed, turbo-diesel engine designed specifically for locomotive applications. The engine is available in 8-cylinder, 12-cylinder and 16-cylinder designs. It works harder. The 7FDL is proven in operation at altitudes over 3000 meters (9850 feet) and temperatures from 50C to +50C (-58F to 120F). It withstands high cyclic thermal loads, a feature often underestimated by other suppliers who try to adapt their engines to locomotive service. It goes longer. The 7FDL is capable of running for millions of cost-effective kilometers. On the 16-cylinder 7FDL engine, for example, overhaul of most components is unnecessary until the engine reaches 26,000 megawatt hours or about eight years of operation in the most demanding environments. It runs smarter. A high-capacity turbocharger, efficient combustion system and electronic fuel injection all combine in the 7FDL engine to offer superior fuel and lube oil consumption capabilities while meeting strict emissions levels. The 7FDL complies with EPA, Kyoto and UIC standards.

Overhaul and upgrade

To get improved performance and greater fuel savings from your 7FDL engines
To get the greatest reliability from your 7FDL engines, GE recommends engine overhauls on a regular basis. Overhauls also let you take advantage of the latest upgrades. Since 1962, when we introduced the 7FDL engine, we have been continuously improving its design and features. With 7FDL engines overhauled and upgraded by GE, customers gain improved reliability and horsepower as well as fuel savings of up to 15%.

High-Performance Turbocharger The 7FDL engine uses a single freespinning, exhaust-driven turbocharger that provides air to the cylinders at approximately four times atmospheric pressure. Tunnel conditions of more than 65C (150F) put unusual demands on turbochargers. We worked with GE Aircraft Engines to develop a turbocharger that handles these conditions while providing efficiency and reliability.

Welded Head-Liner Assemblies Higher peak firing pressures create greater stress on the head-to-liner seal. 7FDL steel heads and liners have a fullpenetration weld that eliminates the upper liner seal. This one-piece design minimizes the effects of heat and stress and prevents leaks. The heads have welded stainless steel valve seats and valve rotators to ensure uniform seating and even wear.

High-Strength Pistons Forged steel crowns on the engines pistons effectively resist high stress and heat conditions. The piston crown is bolted to aluminum-alloy skirts for lighter weight and increased material recovery in overhauls. The piston uses two rings for compression and a third ring for oil control.

Solid Engine Block The 7FDL engine block features a sturdy one-piece cast iron construction. Oil passages are cast into the frame to reduce the potential for leaks. No cooling water, intake air or exhaust gases touch the frame. Access doors can be quickly removed for easy inspection of bearings and other internal crankcase components.

Heavy-Duty Crankshaft The engines one-piece crankshaft is forged from high-quality steel and nitride-hardened for long life. Journal surfaces are precision ground, and all bearing surfaces are force-fed with lubricating oil. Welded counterweights ensure reliability and reflect the overall solid engine structure.
