A teacher of mathematics has a variety of methods and techniques which he might use in his everyday classroom teaching.

The main objective of these methods is to make teaching learning process more interactive and effective. There are various kinds of teaching methods and techniques by which a teacher can select the most relevant one keeping in view the needs of the learner and its relevance to the contents. Some of the commonly used methods are, project method, heuristic method, inductive & deductive methods and analytical & synthetic method etc. To grasp on the subject matter of mathematics it is necessary to use multiple methods in the teaching learning process. Following discussion explain how the use of analytic-syntheic method makes the teaching of mathematics effective. Analytic method ; It is derived from the word analysis which mean breaking up. According to the Webster Comprehensive Dictionary (1982), the Analysis means, the resolution of a whole unit into its parts or elements or the process of resolving a problem into its first element Hence it involves breaking up of the problem in hand so that it ultimately gets connected with something obvious or already known. It proceeds from unknown to known. It starts with what is to be find out & Then think of further steps and possibilities which may connect the unknown with the known and find out the desired result. A statement is analysed into simpler statements and then truth is discovered. It is based on inductive reasoning and critical thinking. All the related facts are analysed to seek help in proceeding to the known conclusion Merits: It develops the power of thinking and reasoning It develops originality and creativity amongst the students. It helps in a clear understanding of the subject because the students have to go thorough the whole process themselves. There is least home work Students participation is maximum No cramming is required in this method. Knowledge gained by this method is more solid and durable. Demerits : It is time consuming and lengthy method, so it is uneconomical. In it, facts are not presented in a neat and systematic order. This method is not suitable for all the topics in mathematics. This does not find favour with all the students because below average students fail to follow this method. Every teacher cannot use this method successfully

So this method is particularly suitable for teaching of Arithmetic, algebra and Geometry as it analyses the problem into sub-parts and various parts are reorganized and the already learnt facts are used to connect the known with unknown. It puts more stress on reasoning and development of power of reasoning is one of the major aims of teaching of mathematics. Eg. If a/b=c/d, prove that (ac-2b2)/b= (c2-2bd)/d The unknown part is (ac-2b2)/b= (c2-2bd)/d In analytic method, we proceed from unknown to known, Hence in ths eg, it is assumed that (ac-2b2)/b= (c2-2bd)/d is true Therefore, a c d 2 b2 d = b c2 2 b2 d is true, if a c d = b c2 is true, if a d = b c is true that is, if a/b = c/d is true, which is known. Synthetic method: The word Synthetic is derived from the word synthesis. To synthesis is to combine the elements to produce something new. It is a process of reasoning from whole to a part and from general to the particular. According to Trowbridge (1986), the synthesis requires the formulation of new understanding of scientific systems. If analysis stresses the parts, synthesis stresses the whole components of scientific systems may be recognized into new patterns Synthetic approach is just apposite to the analytical method. In this method we proceed from known to unknown as synthesis means combing together various parts. In mathematics various facts are collected and combined to find out the result which is unknown Merits: It saves the time and labour. It is short method It is a neat method in which we present the facts in a systematic way. It suits majority of students. It can be applied to majority of topics in teaching of mathematics. It glorifies the memory of the child. Accuracy is developed by the method Demerits: It is an unpsychological method. There is a scope for forgetting. It makes the students passive listeners and encourages cramming In this method confidence is generally lacking in the student. There is no scope of discovery. The recall of each step cannot be possible for every child.

Eg. If a/b=c/d, prove that (ac-2b2)/b= (c2-2bd)/d To solve this example by synthetic method, we proceed from known to unknown. The known part is a/b=c/d Subtract 2b/c on both sides (But why and how the child should remember to subtract 2b/c and not any other quantity) a/b 2b/c = c/d 2b/c or, (ac 2 b2)/b c = (c2 -2 b d ) / c d or, (ac 2 b2)/b = (c2 -2 b d ) / d which is unknown. Thus, we conclude that both the methods go together. Analysis help in understanding and synthetic helps in retaining knowledge. From the above discussion it is clear that the teaching of mathematics becomes holistic & effective by the use of analytic synthetic method.
