El Dorado LunchBox program

A program sponsored by: El Dorado Schools (USD 490) Kansas Food Bank Kids Need To Eat, Inc. (KN2E) Free breakfast & lunch for children attending the USD 490 Summer Academy during June, Monday - Thursday (part of the USD 490 food service program). Need-Based Weekend Foodpacks, June 6 - Aug. 8 (10 weekends), distributed on Thursdays -- KN2E is handling the referral process, packing, and distribution. Free lunches, July 1 - Aug. 8, Mon.-Thurs., noon-1pm, Skelly School, all children under age 18 can pick up. Teen Volunteer-to-Work program, June 1 - Aug. 8 Four (4) teens, ages 14 - 16 (who have completed 8th grade) USD 490 students recruited & selected by Tonya Cogan (Summer Academy Principal) Food Safety for Volunteers & Students (2013) [28 pgs] o Youth must read this before June 3, and participate in discussion class on Monday, June 3, 10:15 - 11:15 am. o Discussion leader: Barb Roths, RD/LR, Butler Co. Extension Ofc Volunteer/Community Service (June) o Assist with Summer Academy Food Service during June: o Monday - Thursday - 11:15 - 12:15 o Help pack Weekend Foodpacks on Thursdays in Skelly Storage room with volunteers recruited by KN2E (9:30-11:30am) Complete Work Readiness curriculum during June. o Instructor: Marcy Aycock with BCC o seven 1-hour classes, 10:15 - 11:15 am o 2 classes first week (Tues. & Wed.), o 3 classes 2nd week (Mon., Tues. & Wed.) o 2 classes 3rd week (Mon. & Tues.) Attend 1-hour Orientation by KN2E during 4th week of June.

Financial literacy modules

Complete the online DollarWise Financial Literacy modules at: bedollarwise.org/syc - a set of 6 brief financial education modules. A weekly lottery will be held on Fridays from June 21 - July 26; each week 3 participants will be picked to win an assortment of prizes including iPads, Kindles, and iPod Shuffles.

Workforce Alliance Summer Youth Program

July 1 - Aug. 8: Paid work program funded by the Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas. Will be paid minimum wage for 10 hours/week for 6 weeks. Youth will be deemed employees of Manpower. It uses an online time sheet, and youth will be paid weekly by electronic debit card within 3 business days of end of work week. Youth can be excused for family events up to 4 work days, but wont be paid for those days. Work hours: o 2 hours, Mon. - Wed. o 4 hours, Thurs. o Week of July 4: 2 hours on Mon. & Tues., 4 hours on Wed. Celebration & debriefing with youth: Thurs., Aug. 8: 1:30-2:30 pm June (4 weeks): Volunteer/Service Monday - Wed., 10:15 - 11:15 am, class Mon. - Thurs., 11:15 am - 12:15 pm, Food Service Helpers Thursdays, 9:30 - 11:15 am: pack Weekend Foodpacks July 1 - Aug. 8: Work component Mon. - Wed.: 11:30 am - 1:30 pm (2 hours/day) Thursdays: 9:30 am - 1:30pm (4 hours) In recognition that families have summer events and kids might have special church or other outings, LunchBoxers can be excused for up to 4 work days July 1 - Aug. 8, making arrangements in advance with KN2E. However, they wont get paid for those days. BCC is sponsoring her time to deliver this curriculum at no cost, and will fund her travel expenses. USD 490 will pay for materials Attire. To make them easy to identify by children & others, KN2E will provide T-shirts (all the same color) that provide the LunchBoxers an opportunity to decorate them (with paints provided) - during Orientation. Name badges: USD 490 offered to provide for both the LunchBoxers and volunteers.

LunchBoxers duties (all at Skelly School)

11:30 am, arrive, entering via west entrance to set up. Sign-in. Set up tables outside west entrance. Open boxes, put lunch sacks & supplemental foods on tables. Mon. - Wed. Open plastic grocery bags and stack them for easy use. Bring milk in from chillers just before noon. Noon: Assist with distributing lunch sacks as children arrive. 1pm: Clean-up Break down empty boxes Bring remaining sack lunches & food back into Storage Room Bring tables back into building Pick up visible trash / litter on school lawn near distribution site. Stock milk cartons in chillers as needed for next day. Sign out.

Thurs.: 9:30 am - arrive & sign in. Assist with packing Weekend Foodpacks in Storage Room. 11:30 am Begin Mon. - Wed. routine. LunchBoxers: LunchBoxers might be able to use the USD 490 shuttle to get to Skelly, Transportation July 1 - Aug. 8, depending on its schedule. Rides might also be arranged as needed. Numana Gardens (NG) fresh produce July 1 - Aug. 8 In addition to the above, LunchBoxers and volunteers will prepare produce donated by Numana Gardens (NG). Cantaloupe, carrots & beans are among possible donations. Produce given an initial quick wash at gardens before delivery. Best not to deliver on Thurs. & Friday afternoons if feasible. NG will coordinate delivery with Skellys principal and/or Head Custodian, and let KN2E know by email what has been delivered. Volunteers & LunchBoxers will slice cantaloupe in Skelly kitchen & pack in sealable plastic bags for distribution; ;ditto carrots. NG offered to provide plastic bags. We can use USD 490 knives and other utensils. NG wants to compost waste from the food preparation. 6 - 10 volunteers & LunchBoxers needed to function as: Greeter: 1 person to welcome children and direct them to sign in. Record keeper: 1 or 2 persons to assist children with signing their first name & age on sign-in sheets Servers: 2 persons at lunch sack table + 2 persons at supplemental foods and milk cartons table Expediter: 1 - 2 persons to thank children for coming, remind them about days/hours, asks them not to litter on way home. Site Supervisor: A volunteer who answers questions, monitors activities, responsible for paperwork, fills in as needed. An intergenerational mix of college students, parents with children, and older adults selected to interact positively with and mentor youth. Acquire Work Readiness skills to help them find work; can use SWE Certificate of Completion on their resume Come into contact with adults who might serve as references when they look for employment. Volunteer/Service component in June makes them eligible for the July-Aug. Internship slots. Likely to have an advantage if apply for a job with the City at age 16. A pilot project that can be expanded in the future. Keep kids busy and constructively occupied during the summer. Helps build youth self-confidence by doing something positive. Promotes work readiness skills, and the potential for participating youth to become constructive citizens. Participating youth more likely to be better students when school year beings.
