Introduction/Overview of Topic

After this assignment I hope to discover if there is any correlation between global location and amount of technological media utilization rate, and to further define those connections. How I came across this topic: As my English class and I were about to start a video on the negative effects of social medias among kids, my sister sent me a text. My sister, Alexia lives in London, England and attends Kings College for graduate school. At that moment I then wondered if kids in London have this social media issues also. Then my thoughts spread to the rest of the world in comparison to the United states, and I immediately began scribbling down people I knew in foreign developed countries. Research for this topic has not fully completed yet, but I have started. I Plan to interview many close friends from exotic foreign places in comparison to myself that will better help me draw connections between global media use differences. Just a small amount of research online leads me to many concrete websites that will aid me in my papers development. I also noticed that some of these studies were done from foreign places, but their view of the United States wasnt quite accurate. I also plan to further elaborate on ideas not quite finished by others. Different stances on this topic: The different positions that can be taken on my topic are not the fact that media use does in fact vary in comparison to where one is in the world. The debate about my topic will occur WHY technology and media use levels vary with respects to global location. For example, some may think that the availability of technology is the sole reason media use varies all over the world, because some countries are so poor that no one even has a cell phone or access to the web. Others may believe that media use differs due to the different lifestyles regions offer. Finally some truly think that technology does not vary with respects to location, but with respects to age. Period.

Initial Inquiry question(s)

Does your location truly affect how important social networking is to a person? Do global location differences affect technological dependency? And if so **How do different global locations of developed countries affect social networking dependency?** Does global location affect the amount of media use? What is the correlation between ones location and social networking?

My interest in this topic: Ever since my sister has had me revise her papers for her projects in graduate school over

in London, England I have been hooked on foreign affairs. This was also around the same time I had coincidentally switched my major to International Business. I love to learn, and I have a passion to travel. I also despise social media networking. This was a way to make my topic about social media more interesting, by adding what I am already interested in. Not relating it to my major at all, but instead the parts about my major, the international part, that makes learning worth wild to me. I already know: Differences in social networking can be exhibited in a distance as small as state to state which I have personally experienced firsthand. I also know that social networking has grown so largely that its obsession has become a global phenomenon. What I hope to learn: This is where I hope to learn how much of a difference global positioning makes in terms the amount of social networking people do. Does your location truly affect how important social networking is to a person? If so how? What specifically effects it? Country stature? Population? Wealth? All of the above? Reflective think book notes? This topic came to me in installments rather than my topic question hitting me all at once. Few but impactful instances kept bringing this matter to my attention but I never really thought about it until I watched a video in class. It all began when I had noticed the difference in media addiction when I made the move from Ohio to North Carolina. In Ohio, few are constantly on

Facebook and if one was to live a life of solitude by becoming constantly represented online instead of reality than that person would have a automatic negative and unsocial image prelabeled onto them. Facebook was just a fad that Ohio had already overgrown and no longer cared much about. After the move to North Carolina I was overwhelmed by the constant need for media networking. People literally asked me why I was never on Facebook, in which I always replied because I have a life. This point was also suggested when I took a trip to Greece following high school graduation. If you could get someone to leave their phone and take in the breathtaking scenery surrounding them that they take for granted it was a miracle. This was the very first instance that made me think about my topic from a global perspective and wonder exactly how media dependency varied globally.

Next steps The next step is to solidify all the people who live in foreign places on the list. I must

also make a list of specific questions to ask while interviewing so I can easily compare the data and results. Then figure out the time differences and what not in order to make a solid date and time to either Skype or at least answer a twenty question survey over Facebook or email. Also I have to find analytical research or surveys from a noteworthy source to also get data and information from.
