Job Description: iConnect Mentor

iConnect Mentors are volunteers who will be responsible for mentoring a small group of international students (up to 6) by acting as their cultural guide and resource person, and to assist in their transition to the University, to Toronto, and to Canada. Mentors will also be encouraged to help iConnect Event Leaders to organize and facilitate workshops and social events that promote cross-cultural understanding, diversity, and community among the iConnect international student family. Mentors will be expected to attend all training and be available in the summer time for online mentoring. This role will require about 8 to 12 hours of dedication each month. Higher need for mentor support can be expected between late August and early October, as mentees first become oriented to the University of Toronto. Responsibilities of Mentors include, but are not limited to: Proactively support mentees in their transition to the University of Toronto by providing information and referrals to appropriate campus resources Promote a sense of belonging and inclusion by maintaining regular contact with mentees and encouraging active involvement in iConnect, University or community-based activities Share your knowledge about Canadian culture and have an interest in learning about other cultures Create a safe, open environment that encourages mentees to talk, discuss their concerns and to ask questions Meet with group of mentees at least once/month and meet individually with each mentee at least once/month Be in contact with mentees as needed through their preferred method of communication (ie. telephone, text, email, social media, in person, etc.). This contact may vary, especially during August and October. Discuss any questions, difficulties, or concerns with your iConnect Leader and/or iConnect coordinator. Attend the following events: o Mentor Training: April 19, 2013 OR May 2, 2013 o iConnect Leader/Mentor meeting: August 21, 2013 o iConnect Welcome Party: September 12, 2013 o Monthly Check-Ins with Leaders and CIE staff: 1 hour, last week of every month Organize a group event with your mentees once per semester Submit a brief check-in report once per month, summarizing your activities Advise your Leader or the iConnect coordinator if any mentee is not engaged in the iConnect program Attend your Leaders group meeting once/semester Skills required for this role: Strong interpersonal, listening, and communication skills Cross-cultural awareness, understanding, and sensitivity Empathy and interest in helping others Dedication to mentoring role and iConnect events Enthusiasm and a desire to learn about all cultures Number of positions for this role: 32 To apply, please fill out an application form.
