EPCC Speech and Debate Team is Golden

Recyclables Will Not be Collected if Wind Gusts Reach 40 mph
El Paso, Texas The City of El Paso Environmental Services Department is reminding residents not to place their blue bins out for collection when wind gusts reach or exceed 40 mph. The department recommends that residents wait until their next regularly scheduled pick-up day to place their blue recycling bins out for collection. The action is necessary to help reduce wind-blown debris on severe weather days. Materials placed inside the blue recycling bins should not be bagged, which makes it easy for them scatter all over the street if recycling bins are tipped over by strong winds. Household garbage should always be taken to the curb on their collection day. Trash placed in the gray bins is not as likely to blow away on windy days if knocked out of the container because the GARBAGE SHOULD ALWAYS BE BAGGED. The El Paso Community College Intercollegiate Speech and Debate Team is having a historic year of competition. ited with beginning Dia in El Paso, a trend that spread throughout Texas and across the United States. She followed the Mexican tra-

dition of Dia de los Nios, and expanded it to include a day that would help her celebrate her love of books and to share it with America. The Mexican tradition evolved into what became the first World Conference for the Well-Being of Children, held in Geneva, Switzerland in August 1925. Several countries then passed the Geneva Declaration Protecting Children. As a mom I knew that children often ask, Why do we have a Mothers Day and a fathers Day, but not a Childrens Day? Mora said in her website, Bookjoy. As a reader I wanted to foster bookjoy. Aha. I said, what if we link a celebration of children with literacy, an issue central to the well-being of children. Continued from page 3 That day, Latino faculty and staff at the University of Arizona enthusiastically supported the concept of annual Dia celebrations, Mora said. Librarians and book lovers in schools across the country loved the idea. On April 30, 1997, the first annual Dia celebrations were held in cities including Tucson, El Paso, and Austin. Since then, Dia celebrations have increased like wild fire. With the slogan that: Literacy strengthens democracy, the goals of this observance from its inception have a included a daily commitment to: *honor children and childhood; *promote literacy, the impor-

tance of linking all children to books, languages and cultures; *honor home languages and cultures, and thus promoting bilingual and multilingual literacy in this multicultural nation and global understanding through reading,. *involve parents as valued members of the literacy team So, if youre a mom or a dad, or a grandmom and a granddad, come help us celebrate this day that's so important for the development of children. The book fair at the park features games, face painting, treats, and, of course, free books 3 used ones and 1 new. Who could say no to that?

NBA Playoff Edition

by the Ball Boy

Miner Basketball might be over for now but the NBA playoffs started this past weekend and its going to be an exciting postseason.
In the East we have several great storylines. The Miami Heat are 2-0 against the Milwaukee Bucks. Lebron and co. have been playing crazy basketball and they may have a sweep on their hands on the way to trying to get their back to back championship. Chicago lost to the Nets on Saturday in a pretty bad loss. Chicago regrouped on Monday with the addition of a previously hurt Joakim Noah. Chicago came back and won against the Nets to even the series at 1-1. No sign of Derrick Rose coming back to this series or the playoffs at all. Indiana leads 1-0 in this series against the Hawks. Paul George has been such an improved player this season and will be a huge factor in this series. New York is now winning the series 2-0 against Boston. Regular season scoring champ Carmelo Anthony is really forcing Boston to get heavy minutes from its bench to try all types of things to stop him. The West has a lot of really close matchups that will most likely be decided by a game 6 or 7 series. The Oklahoma City Thunder have a subplot in this series. Former Thunder player James Harden is now with the Houston Rockets and this will be a persona battle for both teams. OKC leads the series 10 and we will see if Jeremy lin and company can even if up. San Antonio is looking very banged up and bruised. Age is a big factor going against the Spurs but the Lakers have problems of their own. With Kobe Bryant being out for the remainder of the playoffs, we will see how much firepower and confidence does this Laker team really have. Stephen Curry helped even up the series 1-1 with Denver. Currys 30 points help even up this series with the heavily favored Nuggets. Chris Pauls last second winning shot was a huge confidence boost for the La Clippers in game one. La leads this series 2-0 against Memphis and Lob City is ready for the challenge of shutting this series down quickly.

SENATE APPROVES PAYDAY LOAN LIMITS

4/22/13 (Austin) Consumers would gain additional protections when financing short term loans, called payday loads, under a bill approved by the Senate late Monday. Critics say that some short term lenders rack up interest rates against customers and make it virtually impossible for them to ever escape debt. The bill passed Monday includes tough regulations on interest rates and seeks to prevent a number of potential abuses. "It's important to consumers because in some instances the reported APRs on the products exceed one thousand percent," bill author Senator John Carona of Dallas said of his bill. "I don't believe any of us can feel good about that." The bill was amended fifteen times before being passed. As amended, the bill would cap the annual percentage rate of short term loans at 36 percent, which matches the limit the federal government has placed on short term loans to military service members. It would also allow consumers to make partial repayment of the principle in installments, rather than paying back the entire loan plus interest at once, which is required in many of these loan agreements. The bill was amended to not preempt city ordinances that might be more restrictive, and under the bill, companies that violate the proposed regulations would face fines and would be open to civil suits from customers. The bill now heads to the House for consideration. The Senate will reconvene Tuesday, April 23 at 11 a.m.

Hows Elephant Butte Looking?

The drought is not only having an impact on farmers across the region that rely on Elephant Butte lake for irrigated water but also for those who enjoy the water for boating, recreation and fishing. Elephant Butte is known as the Diamond in the Desert. Its the largest body of water in New Mexico that offers a beautiful desert atmosphere. The lake runs about 12 miles long from the dam to the black bluffs area. Elephant Butte has been in a severe drought for about 12 years now. According to Frank Vilorio, owner of Land of Enchantment Fishing Adventures, the lake level is only at 10 to 15 percent of capacity. This is not the lowest Ive seen the lake, the lowest Ive seen this body of water was in 2004 when it dropped to four percent of capacity. Vilorio says the lake has never dried up completely since they completed the dam in 1916 but water levels are a concern for boaters who are not very familiar with the lake. There are main channel marker buoys placed out on the lake (red and green). If you are between them you are in the main body of water and safe to navigate up and down the lake. The long range forecast does not look good at all for southern New Mexico and far west Texas. The Climate Prediction Center shows that for the next several months (at least through July) we will experience above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation. In fact, the rest of the year (including our upcoming Monsoon season) is likely to be a dud for gaining much precipitation.

As the weather warms up and you shed all those winter layers, you may shiver a little at some of those extra pounds gained over the last few months. But as you lighten up for the spring and summer days ahead, think about emphasizing the best parts of your body shape and forget the lumps and bumps for now. At least until you put that swimsuit on for the first time!

First, take a spin in front of the mirror and assess the situation What are the best things
about your body, and what are the "not-so-good" things. We're talking legs, waist, arms, etc. The trick is to play up the best parts and learn how to disguise the flabby arms or the thick waist or the big hips.

One of the fastest ways to shape up your wardrobe is to

pay attention to your waist. Cinching in a jacket or dress with a belt gives your waist instant definition. Or you can do the same thing with Asian-inspired obi sashes or ribbon belts. Peplum tops are still a stylish way to shape up your mid-section, too.

Here are some quick tips for accentuating your positive assets this season:

Then think about what your favorite "go-to" outfit is the "uniform" you turn to that makes
you feel great. There are usually several versions of this in our closets, and we intuitively know what looks best on us. Take stock of the condition of your favorite pieces. Often, it's these essentials that we wear day in and day out that may need replacing the great pair of jeans, the simple pencil skirts, the knit cardigans, tees and tanks.

Don't be afraid to play with prints. The new colorblock graphics

can actually trick the eye with strategically placed patterns that flatter your body. Look for bold stripes that line up in all the right places and provide an optical hourglass illusion that slims you down fast.

Proportion is key. You may

love to wear flowing bohemian tunics in the summer, but if you do choose these roomy tops, then keep it simple and streamlined on the bottom. Slim white jeans or cropped pants will balance out the top half. If your tops are sleeker, then a flowing pant or A-line skirt will be your best bet on the bottom. Remember, opposite silhouettes attract fitted tops with looser bottoms and vice versa.

Then get ready to shop for this season's

interpretation of what you feel is your most flattering outfit. Some of the most flattering shapes for most women, no matter what season it is, are fashion classics that are always in style. Some of this spring and summer's best options may be the wrap dress in a pretty floral print, the sheath dress in a dramatic contrasting stripe, the black suit with a tuxedo jacket or the tailored trench coat in a bold color.

Stock up!

When you do find the pieces that fit and flatter you the best, don't be afraid to stock up. Buy several styles of long tank tops in several colors to layer under sheer tops and short jackets. Buy two pairs of those cropped pants that fit you so well. Stick to the basics you love and just add a few new pieces that will transform your wardrobe and flatter your body at the same time.

week 04/25 - 05/01

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). The good thing about worries is that they can fuel you to do something better than you would have had you not considered the worst-case scenario. Instead of one backup plan, consider having three or four just because the process of thinking them up helps you get to your most brilliant solution yet. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). It will feel as though you're working on what should have been finished yesterday or weeks ago. It's best to strike "should" from your mental vocabulary, though. Things are what they are. Keep working and doing your best, and you'll soon see why the timing, though not entirely under your control, is perfect. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Youthful folly is more easily forgiven than the mistakes of older people who should know better. But the truth is that those who know better do better. Maturity isn't as uniform a process as you might expect. Once you accept that learning can occur at different stages and ages, you become more forgiving. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You're usually grateful when people chip in to help you take care of a need, but there are other thoughts going through your head these days. Perhaps you've pre-paid in some way for the service. Reaping what you've sown is only fair. For people to really touch you now, they must go above and beyond the norm. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Do you remember what you wanted things to be like before you knew what they were really like? Expectations may lead to disappointing real-life experience, but they also open a window of possibility, fantasy and creativity. Being aware of your expectations, you can take measures to create a fantastic reality. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Your body will dictate so much about how things develop for you this week that you would do well to make its needs sacred or at least a top priority. Getting proper nutrition as well as enough sleep and exercise will be absolutely crucial to your mood and success.

Tips for Changing Schools

DR. WALLACE: I am in the ninth grade, and our family will soon be moving to a suburb of Detroit because my dad has been transferred there. I have lived in Rockford all my life. I have a lot of friends here, so I'm a little bit nervous about moving to another state and especially living in a large metropolitan area. At the same time, I'm happy for my dad, and the thought of being in the Detroit area is sort of exciting. Any tips you might provide to help my move be successful will be appreciated. Lynn, Rockford, Ill. LYNN: It's never easy changing schools, especially when the new school is more than 400 miles from old friends. But as you say, it can be an exciting adventure. Dr. Judith Meyers-Walls, a professor of child development at Purdue University, offers the following tips to help teens get started on the right foot: Take the time to find what the norm is at your school. Girls, before you wear that vinyl miniskirt, or guys, those torn blue jeans, look around. Is everyone else dressed conservatively? Pay close attention to the way things are run and the things people wear and say. Then when you make your fashion decisions, you'll have an idea whether you're likely to fit in or stand out. Don't hesitate to let people know you're new. Say something like, "Excuse me, but I'm new here. Could you please show me where the cafeteria is?" The other students will probably enjoy the chance to show you around and fill you in on things. And you're sure to learn more if you admit you don't know everything. Join an extracurricular club. You won't feel like a stranger for long if you belong to a school club. "If you worked for the newspaper at your old school, join the staff of the paper at your new one. It helps to keep some consistency in your life when everything around you is changing," Myers-Walls advises. Don't miss the first meeting. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to join. Be outgoing. As the new teen, you'll have to make an extra effort to talk to others. Strike up a conversation with someone as you leave class. Discuss the homework assignment or something the teacher said. Don't pretend to be something you're not. Boasting, lying about your experiences or putting on airs in order to get along with a new group of kids won't get you very far. Even if it does help you break into a group, you'll feel uncomfortable if you have adopted behavior that is in conflict with your real beliefs and values.
Dr. Robert Wallace welcomes questions from readers. Although he is unable to reply to all of them individually, he will answer as many as possible in this column. Email him at rwallace@galesburg.net.

Mercury Enters Taurus

Mercury is a busy planet, the fastest around the sun and the most changeable in mood, too thus the word "mercurial," which is synonymous with "fickle." May features three big moves for Mercury, the first being an entrance into Taurus on May 1. This will be a hot time for commerce. Those who see a good deal will act quickly to nab it. Merchants beware: Your customer desires quality and knows the difference! ARIES (March 21-April 19). People who desperately need help are also afraid that asking for it will only present more problems. For instance, training people takes time; hiring is expensive; responsibility is daunting. Override worries by taking initiative. Demonstrate that you can solve a problem for another person, and you'll be paid. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). If you think "the die has been cast," you are wrong. This is a temporary color. It will wash away in time or be covered up by a bolder hue. You will change your destiny. Doing one thing right will undo a dozen previous wrongs or at least make those wrongs seem faded and forgettable. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Chemistry matters. Your visceral reaction to people will inform you more than any other information you can gather. This applies to love, business and friendship. Whenever possible this week, it's best to meet in person. Even if this creates a momentary inconvenience, it will be better for your life in the long run. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Even though you know making mistakes is just a part of life, you'd rather prevent them all the same. You are open to new ideas, but you also don't have time to waste in the role of "guinea pig." Wait for the test market to report a good result before you jump into the game. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Creative people are often glamorized and put on pedestals. Perhaps others sense that it's not so easy to be creative. Creativity requires that you pay closer attention, notice more and often feel more, too. Being creative can be painful, but it's a pain you're willing to endure because your heart is full when you create. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). If you stick with what you know, you might be able to achieve flawless accuracy. But you'll also be uninspired. Instead, branch out on a limb extended just far enough from the main trunk to set your mind spinning freely. Do you dare leap? Could you take flight? Happiness is accepting the process of trial and error.

Brighten the Corner Where You Are

Q: We are rehabbing an elegant old townhouse (l889). It's a row house, and the only windows are on the front and back. The dining room is very dark, so we are looking for ways to brighten it up that work with the Victorian atmosphere of the house.

A: Of course, you will add new lighting fixtures, say, cove lighting if you have a cove ceiling. Or consider lighting up the entire ceiling. A couple of torcheres should do the trick. What's really good about a torchere is that the lamp itself virtually disappears. You see the light above you, but not the source. At the same time, color all other major surfaces light: walls and floor. As your house is vintage, chances are you have a darkish hardwood floor. Cover it with a light area rug or room-sized rug. The Victorians had a thing for sisal, at least, in warm weather. In today's climate-controlled environments, a natural-colored wool sisal would be appropriate all year 'round. About the walls: Wallpaper is the right answer in a Victorian house. Just not the dark, heavy patterns that once gave wallpaper a bad name. Thanks to modern technology and inspired innovators like Ronald Redding, today's wallpapers can be metalized, glamorized and sparkling with silvered surfaces and finishes like sand, glass (from recycled auto windshield) and even real crystals. We're not talking bling, however. These papers are as elegant and classic as, say, cashmere, silk and diamonds. In the room we show here, the wall wears "Cypress Gardens," a 9 x 13-1/2-foot mural by the award-winning designer, who was inspired by an antique Chinese silk embroidery from the fabulous archives at York Wallcoverings in York, Pa.

Silvered and sparkling, a wallpaper mural inspired by an antique Chinese embroidery brightens this entire room. Photo: Courtesy York.

THIS WEEK'S BIRTHDAYS: This month's social activities, partnerships and fun will set the tone for the year to come. Negotiations come to a favorable close in May. June features a blending of forces. You'll feel that you're being formed and also having an effect. July introduces a romantic scenario that feels somewhat, but not entirely, under your control. Will you embrace this newness or chalk it up to experience?

That's another story worth telling: how the thennew owners of York acquired hundreds of priceless "documents" (as original designs are known) that had been stacked away in dozens of crumbling cardboard boxes. The collection had belonged to a German designer who ran a New York studio in the early 20th century. Now it brightens the walls of the world. As Ron attests, "We're in the archives every day" looking among the old fabrics and paper scraps - some dating to the l7th and l8th centuries for new inspiration for today's homes. 'Guacamelee!' is in Season
ing to save her. Fortunately, Juan is raised from the dead and transformed into a mighty Luchadore, complete with a magical mask and ultra-broad shoulders! Although Juan is limited to jumping and one type of punching attack at the beginning of this action platformer, he soon learns a fiesta of spicy new moves. Eventually, he can pull off powerful attacks like the pile driver, rooster uppercut and suplex as well as the ability to toss enemies into each other. This makes it extremely fun to build up powerful combos and smash through enemies. I also like how new platforming moves, like running on walls, are required to traverse certain areas. As a result, it's tempting to return to previous areas to explore them for worthwhile rewards. My favorite platforming move, simply because it's so silly, has to be transforming into a nonthreatening chicken to strut through tunnels. Also cool is the ability to travel between the Land of the Living and the Land of the Dead. At first this can only be achieved by using special portals, but eventually players can do it at will. Not only is it visually compelling to travel between worlds, but some areas later in the game make it a requirement. "Guacamelee!" may be ridiculous, but how can you not love a game filled with luchadores, sugar skulls, drunken enemies and chickens?

Adult dogs can be perfect matches for many families

By Dr. Marty Becker and Gina Spadafori Universal Uclick In recent years weve seen a shift in attitude when it comes to adopting an adult dog. Recycled rovers used to be a hard sell, not only because puppies have the cute factor advantage, but also because many people believed adult dogs were less likely than puppies to bond with a new family. Rescue groups, shelters, veterinarians and trainers alike have long argued thats not the case, and the message has gotten through: Adult dogs are now widely considered a wonderful adoption option, especially for people who arent in a good position to raise a puppy. When choosing an adult dog, however, you need to ask questions and then think about the answers. While expecting to work on some things as your new dog gets used to you is reasonable, you want to make sure that you know what youre getting into when it comes to such things as health, behavior and even shedding. There are no wrong answers, but here are some questions to ask about any dog youre considering adopting:

T P O D A ME
Why is this dog available for adoption?
Dogs become available for lots of reasons. Losing our home, divorce and death dont reflect badly on the dog; bit our daughter should give you pause, at the very least. Listen, too, for what isnt said: He needs more exercise than we can give him may mean a dog with exercise requirements only a marathoner could meet, or it could mean the previous owners really wanted a dog with the exercise requirements of a stuffed animal. When in doubt, ask more questions.

What do you know of this dogs history?

You may be dealing with a shelter, a rescue volunteer, the dogs original owner or breeder, or a nice person who found a stray. While its certainly possible for a dog found as a stray to be a perfect candidate for rehoming, knowing a dogs history is usually helpful when it comes to predicting his potential future in your home.

What behavior problems does this dog have? What health problems? Many things are
fixable and worth considering if you honestly believe youll take the time to work with the dog. Remember, too, that some problems dont need anything more than a dose of common sense to fix. Wont stay in the yard, for example, may be easily cured by a decent fence and neutering. As for health, some dogs (like some people) need daily medication for chronic conditions, which might be a problem in some families. How is he with children? Other dogs? Cats? Even if you dont have children, youre going to run into some from time to time. The same is true with other dogs. You can successfully avoid cats if you dont have them, but make certain your prospective pet at least tolerates them well if you do share your home with a cat or two. As for dogs with aggression issues, in many cases these can be worked out, but you may need the help of good trainer or behaviorist, plus a dedication of time and money. Love is not enough for a good match.

An adult dog cant swear hell be the perfect adoption candidate, but if you ask the right questions, he can get pretty close.

While almost any dog can be successfully rehomed with experienced, patient new owners, dogs with severe problems are usually not good projects for beginners. Youll be happier and better able to offer your dog a great new home if you take your time to make sure the fit is a good one. Follow your head as well as listen to your heart, and youll be off to a great start on a new life with the adopted dog you finally choose. In recent years weve both taken adult dogs into our homes, including ones with health or behavior problems. Because we knew what we were getting and knew what we could deal with, everything worked out just fine. And it can for you, too.

Tips on Kitchen Remodeling

of what's trendy. Enough pedantry. Let's talk about the fun part of doing over a kitchen, such as choosing a style that suits your house, colors that suit you and conveniences that will make you love coming into your kitchen every morning. That's just what its owner says about the kitchen we show here. She worked with a professional kitchen designer a good idea for you, too. A kitchen pro can banish your "bewilderment of riches," explain all your options and then order everything you desire and see it properly installed. (To find a certified kitchen designer in your area, go to the Kitchen and Bath Association ProSearch at nkba.com.)

Most of the work is done by hand, including "distressing," that is, beating up cabinets with chains and awls to make them look time worn, worm eaten and loved. In fact, the same craftsperson does the work on every piece that's going into the same kitchen because "everyone has a signature style of distressing," Plain and Fancy sales manager Brian Yahn told reporters during a recent visit. Brian also passed along insider info on what's currently hot we won't say "trendy" with Plain and Fancy's customers. White or light-colored cabinets with a darker center work island. In this kitchen, the homeowner was inspired by a piece of furniture she'd seen in Savannah and asked Plain and Fancy to match it. No problem: The color lab can match almost anything. "People have sent us fabric swatches, photos of antiques, even a toilet seat for color matching," Brian reported. Brighter colors are coming back with the rising economy. "Colors get muted when a recession hits," he said. A good sign for the times: Emerald green is Pantone's Color of the Year for 2013. Watch for new hardware that facilitates space-saving doors that slide open or lift (like the Delorean auto). Also, look for LED lights built into cabinets and drawers a bright idea we didn't know we shouldn't be living without.

Q: We are finally redoing the kitchen in our l898 house (after living here for nine years!) I am struggling with a "bewilderment of riches," to quote my husband. There are so many options. I can't make a decision. All I know for sure is that I don't want dark wood the rest of the house is paneled in oak. Could you give me a few tips on current kitchen trends, mainly colors? A: "Trends" and "kitchen" really don't belong in the same sentence. You're about to spend a lot of money and endure a long spell of inconvenience during renovation, so don't even think about being "trendy." You want to make decisions you'll enjoy living with for many years, not something that comes and goes on the tide

A very personal kitchen is centered with an island painted a color the owner remembered from a trip to Savannah. Photo courtesy Plain and Fancy Cabinetry. In this case, the homeowner teamed with a pro designer who works with one of the top custom cabinetry makers in the U.S., Plain and Fancy (plainfancycabinetry.com), smack in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Acclaimed for its craftsmanship for the past 45 or so years, Plain and Fancy builds every door, drawer and cabinet to order in the vanishing point perspective of its 250,000-square-foot-Schaefferstown facility.

Big Idea in Today's Crowded World -Rose Bennett Gilbert

Think Small

Q: In an earlier column, you mention a 325-square-foot apartment that's been built in a New York museum. As a single guy, I am very interested in small-space living. At the rate we're filling up the planet, it may soon be the only option. You said the furniture was "transformable." Can you show and tell me more? A: There's nothing new about transformable or doubleduty furniture. Even before the planet began "filling up," people wrestled with the problem of how to make small spaces work better.
The l7th-century colonists had settle chairs with chests on the bottom and tops that flipped over to create a table. The l8thcentury added tables with drop leaves. And the 19th-century Victorians adored furniture that did "tricks," like the child's highchair on wheels that turned into a stroller. The early 20th gave us the mother of all transformables, the sofa bed that is actually comfortable enough to sleep in. And here we are in the 21st with even more good news: double-duty furniture that is actually good-looking, mostly thanks to the European taste for lean, clean contemporary styling. They love right angles and sleek surfaces and hate the very thought of "clutter," which includes frisky fabric designs, architectural embellishment like carvings and OMG! patterned wallpaper. If memory serves, however, the "brick" wall in the mico-studio apartment built inside the Museum of the City of New York is actually wallpaper. Adding a touch of the familiar was a smart move by architect Pierluigi Colombo, who designed

the room in collaboration with Clei, the Italian manufacturer (clei.it), and Resource Furniture (resourcefurniture.com). Packing eight rooms into just 325 square feet makes every inch count, bringing to mind the old advertising slogan, "Better living through modern technology." Innovative new hardware powers the transformables: The bed folds down over the sofa without upsetting objects on the shelves. Doors slide sideways. Hassocks open to hidden storage. The bath has wall-hung fixtures (by Duravit), and there's a fully functioning kitchen. This tiny home may be no bigger than many closets, but claustrophobic it's not. Think beds of thorns and blood-red roses hung headdown over knife-like snake plants! Dark, foggy, ominous, the seven-room "Jack" display drew the longest line at last months' huge Philadelphia Flower Show (theflowershow.com). for the U.N.-endorsed International Year of Snow and Ice. Vox Natuare also plans to install an iceberg from the glacier lagoon Jokulsarlon in Iceland as a huge and slowly melting sculpture in New York next year (vox-natuare.org). hold the memories of life ... where you've been ... who you loved (at that time) ... who your parents were," reminded Nate, who said he manages to work some 80 percent vintage furnishings into any design project. But he added a word of caution about collecting things: "Shopping for vintage is not a team sport ... especially with friends who have the same taste as you!"

Q: Keeping an Idea Notebook? A: Some tidbits to jot down from the round of spring design shows: Scary flower arrangements? Contradiction of terms? Not in the hands of Schaffer Designs of Philadelphia, who conjured Whitechapel, London, in l888, the days of Jack the Ripper.

Artist Spotlight | Icona Pop

Aino Jawo and Caroline Hjelt met on a Saturday night in February 2009. It was, Aino says quite reasonably, the best thing that ever happened. So the day after the best thing that ever happened happened, these two girls from the Stockholm suburbs formed a electronic pop duo band, and on the Monday when the hangovers had cleared and it still all seemed like the best thing that had ever happened they booked their first gig Icona Pop was born. This felt all very well, but then they realised they had four weeks until their gig, but no songs. Autumn of 2011, Icona Pop moved from Stockholm to London, and with an album ready to go the tunes are in no short supply. Icona Pop says: We like galloping drums, and synthesisers, but we still like the classical pop melodies. And thats what we are. We dont have to decide, because theres no decision to be made. We just have to do exactly what we want. In the intervening years theyve working with The Knocks (voted one of NMEs hottest production outfits of the hour), Patrik Berger (Robyn), Elof Loelv (Niki & The Dove), Fredrik Berger (The Good Natured) and Style of

Eye, as well as sessions with UK producers like Starsmith (Kylie, Ellie Goulding) and Burns. Their Neon Gold-released double a-side single Manners / Top Rated prompted journals like NME and The Guardian say things along the lines of effortlessly cool and all the makings of a 24-carat pop hit, and the duo have perfected their live show, too that first performance back in 2009 went rather well, all things considered, while their first London gig was impressive enough to bag them a management deal with Artist Company TEN, the team behind Niki & The Dove and Erik Hassle. Theres plenty more of this evocative stuff right across

We both had a crush at home, Caroline recalls, and we were thinking about our lovely men on the other side of the ocean, singing, I will be waiting for you until the sun goes down. The sound of it all is hard to pinpoint, but there are some unmistakeable Madonnaisms on spirited anthem Beat The L. So that original plan for Caroline to give Aino her best night ever? Well, that night they met in 2009 has since been immortalised in song, on the vivid and joyous Nights Like This Caroline explains, everything that night was like magic, and the lyric nights like this, you will never be alone, is what Icona Pop is all about. Its about being together and having fun, and inviting as many people as possible because the best nights out are the ones you want to share with everyone. As nights out go, Icona Pops first must of one of pops most vital, and its still in full effect four years later. In fact, it feels like its just getting going. Were having so much fun all the time, Aino smiles. Its kind of scary.

Matt Kenseths dominating win at Kansas Speedway on Sunday, coupled with his victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway last month, make it clear why Kenseths former car owner, Jack Roush, expressed regret when he let him get away to rival Joe Gibbs Racing.

If I had been as vigilant and diligent and interested in that side of the business as I am on finding why a fuel pump broke or why a connection rod bearing failed or how we could get the next pound of downforce if I had been taking care of the business side of the

business as hard as I tried to take care of the technical side, I might have been able to stop that, Roush said last summer. But after Kenseth scored his 26th career Cup victory on Sunday by leading 163 of 267 laps at Kansas after starting from the pole, he said

that Gibbs team is the place he feels most comfortable, and that making the move wasnt as difficult as one might imagine. And thats considering the fact that before joining Gibbs, hed spent his entire career, save one race, in Roushs No. 17 Ford. Kenseth said the decision to change teams was his alone, with the support of his wife. I didnt talk to anybody about it except for Katie, he said. She would never tell me what to do, necessarily pick for my profession. She would let me do that. But certainly she had a positive feeling about it, as well. I didnt really tell anybody else about it. I really didnt need to. It wasnt really a hard decision, believe it or not.

He said that one of the things that lured him to Gibbs was the chance to work with two highly talented Gibbs drivers Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin. He said he liked the idea of working with

drivers who were different from him and different from each other. I think we all have different personalities, we all have a different approach to things, we all have a different way we handle things, he said. Its all different. And I think thats good. He said that if everyone wants and likes the same things, its difficult for the group to improve their overall performance. There are no different viewpoints to consider and to think about and to look at or a different setup or idea or a different approach to driving the race track, he said. That was really interesting, and I think weve been doing a good ...Continues on page 19

Dodge resurrects the Dart aims at the compact car market By Christopher A. Randazzo
When I think of the Dodge Dart, I am reminded of the early-to-mid 70s version of the car, and how unattractive I thought it was. But the Dart has a rich history with Dodge, going back to its 1960 debut as a full-size car, then a few years later becoming a mid-size. When it finally ended its run in 1976, the Dart was considered a compact. For 2013, the Dart returns smaller than ever this time taking aim at the compact car market. The 2013 Dodge Dart is the first child from the Chrysler-Fiat marriage and genes from both are evident. The platform is borrowed from the Alfa Romeo Giulietta yet the styling is more like an adolescent version of the Charger. There are familiar cues like the Dodge crosshair grille and available racetrack LED taillights, making the overall appearance work well with no reminisce of the Caliber, the car the Dart replaces, can be found. Dodge is offering the Dart in four trim levels: the base SE, the SXT, the Limited and the GT (initially called the R/T). A Rallye package is available on the SXT that adds more flare (but no extra power) to the Dart. The front-wheel drive Dart is available with three different engines. All (except the GT) come standard with a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder that makes 160 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. If more power is needed, that engine can be swapped with a 1.4 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. It makes the same 160 horses, but feels stronger as torque gets a boost to 184 lb-ft. The GT comes with the most powerful engine offered in the Dart a 2.4 liter 4-cylinder making 184 hp and 171 lb-ft of torque. All engines come standard with a six-speed manual transmission. The base 2.0 and 2.4 in the GT can be had with an optional six-speed automatic, while the 1.4 turbo can be had with a six-speed automated manual. I had the opportunity to spend time in a Dart SXT Rallye and a Dart Limited. The SXT Rallye was in Header Orange a color that made the car easily spotted from miles away. Having the Rallye package, this Dart sported an aggressive blackaccented front fasica, fog lamps, and dual exhaust tips. Under the hood of the SXT was the optional 1.4 turbo engine with the six-speed automatic manual, which for the most part behaved like an automatic. The interior of the SXT is more function than fashion. Controls are easy to use and there are lots of storage bins including under the cushion of the front passenger seat. But the rest of the interior reminded me of a rental car quite forgettable. With the turbo engine, the Dart drove with acceptable power, but the automated manual seemed more hurtful than helpful. Sure it shifted quickly, but it seemed to pick the wrong gear at

times, and the engine seemed slow to respond to throttle input. Its best feature comes at the gas pump where its rated at 27 mpg in town and 37 mpg on the highway. The Dart Limited was in a more calm Diesel Gray color and had the base 2.0 4-cylinder with the six-speed automatic. But where the Limited won me over the SXT was inside. An 8.4 inch touchscreen dominated the center stack and was easy to use for the entertainment and nav systems. And instead of basic gauges as found in the SXT, the Limited gets a reconfigurable electronic gauge cluster, so you can set the display to how you want it to appear. Heated leather seats, a heated steering wheel and blind spot detection were also nice, unexpected features to find in the Dart Limited. Being that the Limited had the base engine, I didnt find it lacked that much power over the turbo. It did feel smoother and I much preferred the way the old fashion transmission shifted gears. EPA numbers are a bit lower though, coming in at 24 mpg in town and 34 mpg on the highway. Neither engine will satisfy your need for speed; possibly the Dart GT will take care of that. With the Dart SXT Rallye coming in at $24,390 versus the Dart Limited being right under the $25,000 mark, the Limited is the Dart of my choice. Im not sure if the Dart will hit the bulls-eye in the compact car market, especially when it competes with the likes of the Chevy Cruze and Ford Focus. But it is a very good first attempt and it appears to be right on target. By The Numbers: Base Price: $19,995.00 Price as Tested: $24,965.00 Layout: front-engine /front-wheel drive Engine: 2.0 liter four-cylinder Transmission: 6-speed automatic Horsepower: 160 hp Torque: 148 ft-lbs EPA Fuel Economy: 24 city / 34 highway mpg [Visit me at www.carsbycar.blogspot.com or email me at autocran@gmail.com]

I think its really helped me become a better driver, really elevates your game when you have guys like that that can go out and win any week. Kenseth also said that his early season success isnt surprising. I think as an organization, one of our cars if all the stars would have aligned could have won every race this year, if everything would have worked out, he said. The only place I feel like we really kind of somewhat missed it was California, and [Busch] won there. Other than that, weve had cars that have been capable of running in the top three or four every week. Despite his wins, Kenseth is eighth in the standings, 59 points behind leader Jimmie Johnson, who finished third at Kansas. Kenseths crew chief Jason Ratcliff expressed

Were running well, and yes, were winning races and doing the things we need to do, but I feel like we have a lot of room to grow as far as our race car, he said. I feel like theres still a lot of speed to find to be a contender in the Chase. Were looking forward to it, but we still have a lot of work ahead of us. Kenseths win at Kansas from the pole marked the third straight Cup race that the top qualifier went on to win. That hasnt happened since 1985, when Bill Elliott did it at Michigan and Darlington, with Dale Earnhardt getting both pole and win at Bristol in between.
