SAP Consultant Resume Guidelines

October 18, 2012, by Pete

If you are a SAP Consultant and decided that its time to seek out new opportunities that have better compensation package, new challenges, or employers that provide better learning / training then you need to create the best marketing tool, your Resume. There are many different styles of resume as there are professionals, so this article will focus on formats that work very well for consulting. Most people say that resumes should never be more than three or four pages long but this does not apply on consultants as they can easily have several different work or contracts over a few years. Such experience will be recent and pertinent and, therefore must be on the resume. Agents, HR personnel, and prospective clients skim through many resumes to find candidates with the qualifications they are looking for. The format suggested below gives the reader your key information within the top half of the page.

Essential Information This defines who you are and how to get in contact with you. Details such as name, address, phone numbers, and e-mail address go here. Formal Education List all you post secondary education, including diplomas and degrees, SAP trainings, SAP certifications, and other personal development course you may have. Technical Skill Set Details of you skill set goes here. This includes programming languages, operating systems, SAP versions, and software packages that you have strong experience with. Remember to include software version numbers whenever possible i.e. Microsoft Windows Server 2008, SAP ECC 6.0, SAP BW 7.0 etc. General Summary Give a brief summary of your consulting strengths and how you can help an organization. This is important because this is your only chance to elaborate on your capabilities in the areas of SAP. Keep this section to one or two brief paragraphs. Contract Summaries- This section contains a list of all your current and /or previous contracts, starting with the most recent. This should include the following: Client Name (You may need to list generic names if this information is confidential) Start / End Date of Contract (month/year format) Project Name (This is optional) Scope of your work in paragraph format. Describe your contribution, especially if your added value is more than just coding or configuring. Include the various modules of SAP you worked on.

Details you should not include in your Resume

References: Putting references in a resume is not recommended because you cannot be sure who will get a copy of it and you dont want just anyone calling your references. Prepare references in a separate document and give it only when you are in advanced in the interview process. Compensation received in past assignments: Resumes may

accidentally be circulated through offices in which compensation is confidential. If compensation expectations are requested, submit them in a separate letter or include them in a formal cover letter Address of past clients: Although listing names of past clients is all right, it is important to keep control and not to let prospective clients get in touch with your past clients without your knowledge. You want to make sure that prospective clients only contact people who know they are a reference and are prepared to talk about you. Names of past supervisors: Just like addresses, it is important to keep control of who has access to your past supervisors.

Common Resume Mistakes

As a consultant, your resume is in constant use and must be perfect. The following are things to check for and to avoid on your resume: Misspellings, typographical errors, poor grammar Irrelevant information such as health or sex Elaborate fonts, pictures, outlandish paper stock, italics Too much or not enough information; give enough, but not irrelevant information Poor type and print smears, which makes the rsum hard to read and looks unprofessional Unprofessional e-mail addresses or Web site references such as mickey_mouse143@email.com

Cover Letter
While the resume is a somewhat generic advertisement for yourself that you may send unaltered to many different companies, the cover letter allows you to tailor your application to each specific job. In the current SAP environment, cover letters are not much used. Typically, you contact or are contacted by an agent and your resume is all that passes hands. However, if you are new to the consulting field or if you find yourself needing to put a cover letter together, a format similar to the one below works well. Many of the

same mistakes that can be made in a rsum also can be made in the cover letter. Make sure that all of the information is accurate, that there are no typographical errors, and do not make the letter look too flashy. The following are mistakes to avoid: Clichs, amusing anecdotes, and anything else that is not relevant to the position for which you are applying. Desperation. Instead, make your letter reflect a determined person. Not ensuring that all information about the prospective employer is correct. Because the cover letter should be specific for the job/employer, make sure that all details in the letter about the employer are accurate. Mentioning your weaknesses. Instead, your cover letter should emphasize your strengths.
