By-election win for Labour LABOURS Phillip Brightmore is the new councillor for Pensby and Thingwall ward after the Lib Dems, Conservatives and UK Independence Party votes were split. In the by-election at the end of February, Mr Brightmore polled 1,411 votes, with Sheila Clarke (Cons) second with 868, Damien Cummins (Lib Dem) third on 834 and Jan Davison (UKIP) on 426. This means that the make-up of Wirral Council now stands at Labour 37, Conservative 22, Lib Dem 7. The turnout was 35 per cent. Other candidates were Allen Burton (Green) on 74 and Neil Kennyh (English Democrats) with 53 votes. Linghams in the running for book store prize Once again, for the second year running, Linghams, in Heswall, is the regional winner of Independent Bookseller of the year (North) , which means they have again been shortlisted for the Independent Bookseller of the Year Award 2013 for the whole of the UK. The nationwide winner will be announced on 13th May at the Hilton Hotel Booksellers Awards Dinner. Stay of execution for day centre A DAY CARE centre in Heswall threatened with closure has been given a temporary reprieve. Wirral Council wants to shut the day centres at Heswall, Moreton and Eastham as part of a series of cuts to balance the books. Heswall councillor Andrew Hodson accused the ruling Labour group of a slash and burn policy. The council decided on a three month consultation process to give people the chance to have their say but it refused to guarantee that the service would remain. Surgery highlights troublespots A surgery to highlight anti-social behaviour concerns was held at Heswall One Stop Shop recently. The Wirral Anti-Social Behaviour Team stopped off at Heswall to meet people in their neighbourhoods and find out where the troublespots are. Youth sports evenings Friday youth sports activities, including football, cricket, dodgeball, rounders and more are available for young people at Pensby Sports College, Irby Road, 7pm 9pm. New name for family history group The West Kirby branch of the Family History Society for Cheshire meets on the second Wednesday of each month at Westbourne Community Centre, Westbourne Road, West Kirby. There is a help desk from 1.30pm where you are invited to bring along any problems you may having regarding your family tree research and experienced members will endeavour to help you. From 1st June the group will be known as West Wirral Family History group as it covers Neston up to West Kirby. Water companys major works

Welsh Water is currently spending over 8million on building giant underground storage tanks in Heswall. The work is being carried out at the Heswall Wastewater Treatment Works and the Riverbank Road Wastewater Treatment Works.. It forms part of the European Shellfish Waters Directive which is aimed at improving wastewater treatment in the area. The overall aim is to protect and improve shellfish life and growth which will benefit the quality of shellfish products sourced from the local estuary. The new tanks will store water during storm weather conditions when the works are working at full capacity. This will improve the performance of the works which in turn will improve overall water quality in the Dee Estuary. One tank will store nearly 6 million litres of storm water enough to fill two Olympic size swimming pools, the other at Riverbank will have a capacity of 1.6million litres, thats over 250,000 toilet flushes. Work on the project began in May 2012 and it is anticipated that it will be finished by May this year. Richard Heaps, project manager, said: We have faced several challenges over the last few months due to a number of factors including difficult ground conditions and adverse weather. We would like to thank local customers for their patience during the work. As a result of the big volume of lorries entering and leaving the sites, the company has laid a second of tarmac from Regency Lodge to the site at Mostyn Avenue. As part of the scheme, Welsh Water will be separating the surface water from the wastewater network, which will allow the network in the area to operate more efficiently. Wirral to host month-long walking festival

The 2013 Wirral Walking Festival will take place from the 1st 31st May with over 100 walks throughout the peninsula and there is something suitable for everyone, regardless of age or ability. Highlights of the festival include a series of walks to mark the 40th anniversary of Wirral Country Park, one of the first designated Country Parks in Britain, and walks organised by the Wirral Footpaths and Open Spaces Preservation Society in this, their 125th year of existence. Other events are organised by Wirral Councils Rangers, local walking clubs and societies such as the Ramblers Association, while the festival also incorporates walks which are part of regular local initiatives such as Buggy Park Fitness alongside other events incorporated within the themes of History and Heritage, Habitats and Wildlife, Food and Drink and Health Walks. Tours of the tidal Hilbre Islands at the mouth of the River Dee and guided walks around the famous Ness Gardens will feature as part of the festival, as will the Wirral Coastal Walk, which attracts more than 5,000 people to the 15 mile route, taking place on Sunday 19th May. Cllr Chris Meaden, Wirral Council Cabinet member for Culture, Tourism and Leisure, said: Wirrals coast and countryside has for a long time attracted walkers from all over the area and beyond, but this is the first time the Council has joined together with local groups to put together a dedicated festival of walking. Some of the walks planned during the festival will be accessible to people with limited mobility and some are designed for all the family to take part in. It is recommended that people check with the walk organiser for each event if you have specific requirements, including wheelchair access or if you are unable to step over stiles. Flower clubs open evening HESWALL Flower Clubs charity open evening takes place on Wednesday 17th April with a demonstration by Nigel Whyles entitled The Bizarre World of Clarice Fliff. The event takes place at 7.30pm and proceeds go to St Johns Hospice. Earlier in the month, on Wednesday 3rd April, the flower clubs monthly meeting will be in the form of a Spring Workshop 8pm at Heswall Hall. The workman on the left had string tied round his trouser legs - a ploy used by manual workers to prevent vermin running up their legs! Spring flowers and foliage

produce tiny delicate, pale yellow, white or pink flowers in spring with rounded heart shaped leaves for the rest of the year colouring in autumn. Once the weather is warmer, you can start planting carrots, lettuce, radishes and other salads outside. Look out for frosts and cover small apple or pear blossom with fleece to try and protect it from frost. Last year I lost the crop on one apple tree but the second, flowering later, gave me some fruit. Also divide congested clumps of perennials such as Geraniums or Hostas. If you like visiting gardens I would suggest checking out the National Gardens Scheme which raises money for charities through opening gardens. You can see local gardens with ideas for planting you can use yourself and often buy plants. Saighton Grange near Chester is great for spring flowers and bulbs and Briarfield near Burton will give you great ideas for woodland planting.
April brings many delights to the garden from beautiful delicate flowers and wonderful fresh foliage.
One of my favourite shrubs is Amelanchier lamarkii or Snowy mesphilus, which is well named as the shrub is covered with white flowers in April in amongst the pale, bronzy new leaves. Although it likes moisture retentive, lime free soil I have grown it on neutral to alkaline soil.
If you want a climber, then Clematis alpine and Clematis macropetala varieties are in flower in April. Both have bell like flowers in pale pink, or blue on vigorous growth which will happily cover trellis. Easy to grow in a sunny sheltered site or Clematis alpina will take a more exposed position, in well drained soil. Flowers are produced on stems grown the previous year so cut back after flowering. Spring perennials for ground cover in shade includes Pulmonaria
with their blue, white, red and pink flowers, depending on variety, then attractive foliage for the rest of the year. Good for smothering weeds in shady places but you must keep their roots moist or you will have a collapsed plant in dry spells! Another shade loving perennial are the Epimediums.
