Retaining Wall Design Example

1/8

Design a reinforced concrete retaining wall for the following conditions.

surcharge = qs = 400psf

Fill: = 32o Unit wt = 100 pcf HT = 18 ft

tf wtoe tstem wheel Natural Soil: = 32o allowable bearing pressure = 5000psf

Development of Structural Design Equations. In this example, the structural design of the three retaining wall components is performed by hand. Two equations are developed in this section for determining the thickness & reinforcement required to resist the bending moment in the retaining wall components (stem, toe and heel). Equation to calculate effective depth, d: Three basic equations will be used to develop an equation for d. (1) M u = M n a M n = As f y d , 2 (2) C = T , 0.85 f a b = As f y ,
' c

a M u = As f y d [ Eqn1] 2 f c' As = 0.85 ab [ Eqn 2] fy

(3) strain compatibility :

0.003 s + 0.003 a 0.003 = , = 1 a / 1 d d s + 0.003 a/d 0.319 0.235 0.196

Assuming 1 = 0.85 (true for fc <= 4,000 psi) s 0.005 0.00785 0.010

and choosing a value for s in about the middle of the practical design range,

a = 0.235, d Substituting Eqn. 2 into Eqn. 1:

a = 0.235 d

[ Eqn 3]

CE 433, Fall 2006

Retaining Wall Design Example

2/8

f' a M u = 0.85 c ab f y d fy 2

And substituting Eqn. 3 into the above:

M u = 0.85 f c' 0.235 d ' 2 0.235d b f y d = (0.90)(0.85)(0.235)(0.883) f c b d fy 2

0.883d

M u = 0.159 f c' b d 2 [ Eqn. 4]

Equation for area of reinforcement, As. The area of reinforcement required is calculated from Eqn. 1:

a M u = As f y (d = ) = 0.90 As f y 0.883 d 2

M u = 0.795 As f y d

[Eqn. 5]

Design Procedure Example (after Phil Ferguson, Univ. Texas) 1. Determine HT. Usually, the top-of-wall elevation is determined by the client. The bottom-of-wall elevation is determined by foundation conditions. HT = 18 feet. 2. Estimate thickness of base (footing). tf 10% HT (12" minimum) tf = 0.1 (18' x 12"/') = 21.6"

use tf = 22"

3. Design stem (tstem, Asstem). The stem is a vertical cantilever beam, acted on by the horizontal earth pressure.
