1.0 INTRODUCTION
Open source software (OSS) is defined as computer software for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that meets the Open Source Definition or that is in the public domain. This permits users to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms

Meaning of Hardware
A computer's hardware consists of the physical components necessary to operate and interact with a computer. Since a computer's primary language is binary, devices are necessary to convert our input into that language. The binary code coming out of the computer must also be translated into something usable for the operator.

Meaning of Software
Software is often divided into two categories: 1.System software: Includes the operating system and all the utilities thatenables the computer to function. 2.Application software

:Includes programs that do real work for users. For example, word processing, spreadsheets, and database management systems fall under the category of applications software

2.0The Latest Open Source Operating System (OS)

2.1 Meaning of open source OS Open Source Operating System is the most important program that runs on a computer that is free to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms. Every general-purpose computer must have an operating system to run other programs. Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers. 2.2 Example of open source OS

Elive Linux
A complete operating system alternative for computers to replace the proprietary, highcostsystem. It is built on top of Debian GNU/Linux and customized to meet the needs for a complete operating system while still offering the user eye-candy, with minimal hardware requirements. Elive Linux comes with a full suite of applications both work-wise and multimedia-wise. This OS gives users the ability to make 3D animations, or compose movies in a real-time non-linear video editor from simple videos taken with the video camera. Users can edit and manipulate audio and image files for better quality, effects, or design. Elive Linux is a very stable system with ultra-fast desktop and perfectly secure with no random errors or surprises.

React OS
An advanced free open source operating system providing a ground-up implementation of a Microsoft Windows XP compatible operating system. React OS aims to achieve complete binary compatibility with both applications and device drivers meant for NT and XP operating systems, by using a similar architecture and providing a complete and equivalent public interface. React OS has and will continue to incorporating features from newer versions and sometimes even define the state of the art in operating system technology.

3.0The Latest Open Source Application Software 3.1 Meaning of Open Source Application Software
Application software is a defined subclass of computer software that employs the capabilities of a computer directly to a task that the user wishes to perform. This should be contrasted with system software which is involved in integrating a computer's various capabilities, but typically

does not directly apply them in the performance of tasks that benefit the user. The term application refers to both the application software and its implementation.

Mozilla Firefox 14 is the latest version of the popular web browser and brings with it a few key and welcome new features. First among them is the company's claim to a speedier, safer browsing experience. Tests reveal that this newest version of Mozilla Firefox is certainly quick to load even the most graphics intense pages. Firefox 14 also now features secure connections when performing Google searches to improve privacy and there's an updated site identity indicator in the URL bar. Windows users also now get silent updates while Mac users on Lion or above can use Firefox in full-screen mode. Mozilla Firefox's new tab layout itself is a pretty noticeable new feature. Quite similar to Google's Chrome browser, instead of seeing a blank page whenever a new tab is opened Firefox users will now be treated to icons that offer quick access to everything from bookmarks to most recently accessed and most frequently visited sites. These icons are fully customizable in Mozilla Firefox as well. You can click and drag them to any spot you like on your name tab's page. If you're not a fan, you can also go to the grid icon on the upper right side of your browser and erase them entirely.Mozilla Firefox 14's interface isn't much different from previous versions, but the features it has added certainly make for a nicer, more enjoyable browsing experience overall.

VLC media player is the most successful free open source multimedia player out there with over 500 million downloads according to the developers. In particular, VLC media player is a great alternative to Windows Media Player, iTunes, and RealPlayer. It's lightweight, fast, easy to use and most importantly, plays almost anything. It's been two and a half years since version 1.0 was released and version 2 ("Twoflower") brings a new interface, faster decoding, support for more formats and the ability to play HD and BluRay. It still remains however the most stable, flexible and lightweight audio and video player around today. While other media players will play unusual formats after downloading a codec, or simply refuse to play things, VLC media player handles tons of formats, from MPEG to FLV and RMBV files. Version 2 has seen some important additions too such as support for 10 bit codes plus multi-threaded decoding for H.264, MPEG-4/Xvid and WebM.

4.2 Software (Adobe Photoshop CS5, CS6 and touch) Adobe Photoshop CS5
Photoshop CS5 was launched on April 12, 2010.[53] In a video posted on its official Facebook page, the development team revealed the new technologies under development, including threedimensional brushes and warping tools.[54] In May 2011, Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 (CS5.5) was released, with new versions of some of the applications. Its version of Photoshop, 12.1, is identical to the concurrently released update for Photoshop CS5, version 12.0.4, except for support for the new subscription pricing that was introduced with CS5.5.[55] CS5 introduces new tools such as the Content-Aware Fill, Refine Edge, Mixer Brush, Bristle Tips and Puppet Warp.[56] The community also had a hand in the additions made to CS5 as 30 new features and improvements were included by request.[56] These include automatic image straightening, the Rule-of-Thirds cropping tool, color pickup and saving an 16-bit image as a JPEG.[56] Another feature includes the Adobe Mini Bridge which allows for efficient file browsing and management.[56] CS5 Extended includes everything in CS5 plus features in 3D and video editing. A new materials library was added, providing more options such as Chrome, Glass, and Cork.[56] The new Shadow Catcher tool can be used to further enhance 3D objects.[56] For motion graphics, the tools can be applied to over more than one frame in a video sequence.[56]CS5 and CS5 Extended were made available through Adobe's online store, Adobe Authorized Resellers and Adobe direct sales.[56] Both CS5 and CS5 Extended are offered as either a stand-alone application or feature of Adobe Creative Suite 5.[56] The price for CS5 is US$699 and the extended version is US$999.[56] Both

products are compatible with Intel-based Mac OS and Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.[57]

Adobe Photoshop CS6 On March 21, 2012, Adobe released a beta version of Photoshop CS6. It adds new creative design tools and a redesigned interface[58] with a focus on enhanced performance.[59] New features have been added to the Content-Aware tool such as the Content-Aware Patch and ContentAware Move.[59] Adobe Photoshop CS6 also brings suite of tools for video editing. Color and exposure adjustments, as well as layers are among a few things that are featured in this new editor. Upon completion of editing, the user is presented with a handful of options of exporting into a few popular formats.[60] CS6 brings the "straighten" tool to Photoshop, where a user simply draws a line anywhere on an image, and the canvas will reorient itself so that the line drawn becomes horizontal, and adjusts the media accordingly. This was created with the intention that users will draw a line parallel to a plane in the image, and reorient the image to that plane to easier achieve certain perspectives.[60] CS6 also allows background saving, which means that while another document is compiling and archiving itself, it is possible to simultaneously edit an image.[60] CS6 also features a customizable auto-save feature, preventing any work from being lost.[60] Adobe has responded to feedback from graphic designers and has modified the User Interface accordingly. Now, it boasts a more unified, static look, and is easier to keep track of all the palettes and documents.[60]

Photoshop Touch

Photoshop Touch is an application designed specifically for tablets and touch screen devices.

5.0 Pervasive Computing 5.1Meaning The idea that technology is moving beyond the personal computer to everyday devices with embedded technology and connectivity as computing devices become progressively smaller and more powerful. Also called ubiquitous computing, pervasive computing is the result of computer technology advancing at exponential speeds - a trend toward all man-made and some natural products having hardware and software. Pervasive computing goes beyond the realm of personal computers. It is the idea that almost any device, from clothing to tools to appliances tocars to homes to the human body to your coffee mug, can be imbedded with chips to connect the device to an infinite network of other devices. The goal of pervasive computing, which combines current network technologies with wireless computing, voice recognition, Internet capability andartificial intelligence, is to create an environment where the connectivity of devices is embedded in such a way that the connectivity is unobtrusive and always available. 5.2Examples Smartphone A smart phone is a mobile phone offering advanced capabilities, often with PC-like functionality. There is no industry standard definition of a smart phone. For some, a smart phone is a phone that runs complete operating system software providing a standardized interface and platform for application developers. For others, a smart phone is simply a phone with advanced features like e-mail, Internet and e-book reader capabilities, and/or a built-in full keyboard or external USB keyboard and VGA connector. In other words, it is a miniature computer that has phone capability. Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)

A personal digital assistant (PDA) is a handheld computer, also known as a palm top computer. Newer PDAs also have both color screens and audio capabilities, enabling them to be used as mobile phones, web browsers, or portable media players. Many PDAs can access the Internet via Wi-Fi, or Wireless Wide-Area Networks (WWANs).Many PDAs employ touch screen technology. 6.0 CONCLUSION Open source software has natural strengths which benefit individual users. Above and beyond this, the widespread use of open source software holds advantages for the U.S. economy as a whole, and it is for this reason that a careful program of government promotion and encouragement would be justified and beneficial. The aim of the research presented in this thesis is to contribute to the design of CSdCL environments of good pedagogical quality. This is approached by exploration of the research question: What are the most crucial limitations and possibilities of Internet related to performing collaborative activities in distributed learning situations? The research question is primarily illuminated through the process of developing a prototype of a CSdCL computer system and the application of this in a CSdCL situation. This development is founded on literature studies and initial studies at two distance education institutions.
