Summary of Lesson Plan NV State Social Studies Objectives
NV State Standards: G5.1.1A- Identify water and land on a map and globe. Correctly use the terms ocean and continent.

Week 1 of 2
Notes

MONDAY week #1

This is the first lesson in a unit about where we live. This lesson will introduce information about the shape of the Earth and its continents and oceans. Students will use the Houghton Mifflin 1st grade Social Studies textbook: School and Family, pages 74-77.

Create KWL chart outline on butcher paper

Student-friendly Standards: I will know Make 30 copies of a blank map of the world the difference between land and water on a map and globe. I can Put vocabulary words on board correctly label the oceans and continents on a map and globe. NV State Standards: G6.1.1- Sort and group pictures displaying geographic features, e.g. forest, deserts, lake regions. Student-Friendly Standards- I will be able to compare and contrast different geographic and physical regions such as mountains, plains, rivers and lakes. Make 30 copies of a compare and contrast chart Print and laminate pictures of plains, mountains, rivers and lakes. Cut pictures and put in ziplock baggies for each table. Write vocabulary words on board.

This is the second lesson in a geography unit about where we live. The lesson will compare and contrast various physical features in different regions. Students will use the Houghton Mifflin 1st grade social studies textbook: School and Family, pages 82-85

TUESDAY week #1 WEDNESDAY week #1

This is the 3rd lesson in a unit about where we live. This lesson introduces natural resources-where they come from and the importance of conservation. Students will use the Houghton Mifflin 1st grade social studies textbook: School and Family, pages 88-93.

NV State Standards: G8.1.2- Identify locations for accessing basic resources available to the student. Student-Friendly Standards: I can identify and give examples of natural resources we use on a daily basis.

Cut enough butcher paper for students to work in pairs to create their posters Write vocabulary words on board

THURSDAY week #1

This is the 4th lesson in a unit about where we live. In this lesson students will learn about characteristics of weather and how they are different in various regions. Students will use the Houghton Mifflin 1st grade social studies textbook: School and Family, pages 96-99.

NV State Standards: G8.1.1- Tell how the physical environment affects activity at school, i.e., inside/outside recess. Student-Friendly Standards: I will be able to describe characteristics of weather and how they affect us at school.

Print 30 copies of the weather worksheet Write vocabulary words on board

FRIDAY week #1

This is the 5th lesson in a unit about where we live. In this lesson students will learn about the differences between a city, suburb, and town. Students will use the Houghton Mifflin 1st grade social studies textbook: School and Family, pages 102-105.

NV State Standards: G7.1.3- Identify characteristics of rural and urban communities. Student-Friendly Standards: I will be able to identify characteristics of a city, suburb and town.

Write vocabulary words on board

NV State Standards: G5.1.3Recognize the shape of North America on a map. G6.2.7- Locate his/her city and state on a map. Student-Friendly Standards: I will be able to locate the United States on a map of North America. I will be able to locate my state and city on a map of the United States.

MONDAY week #2

This is the 6th lesson in a unit about where we live. In this lesson students will identify the United States on a map and be able to locate their state within the United States. Students will use the Houghton Mifflin 1st grade social studies textbook: School and Family, pages 110-113

Make 30 copies of blank North America map. Make 30 copies of blank United States map. Write vocabulary words on board.

TUESDAY week #2

This is the last lesson in a unit about where we live. In this lesson, students will compare the United States with neighbors Canada and Mexico. Students will use the Houghton Mifflin 1st grade social studies textbook: School and Family, pages 116-119.

NV State Standards: G6.1.2- Identify similarities and differences between people in communities. Student-Friendly Standards: I will be able to identify neighbors of the United States and characteristics of those regions.

Make 30 copies of the comparison chart Write vocabulary words on board

This is the conclusion to a unit about where we live. Students will play a concentration/memory game of concepts learned throughout the unit as a review, and then take a unit test to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of material. Students can use the Houghton Mifflin 1st grade social studies textbook: School and Family, pages 74-119 as a resource.

Make enough copies of concentration cards for students to work in pairs- laminate, cut and put in baggies. Make 30 copies of the unit test
