Governments of the Northern Hemisphere

Author: Hayley Hood Revision Date of Lesson Plan (if applicable): April 23, 2013 Overall Goal for the Lesson: For students to create a video displaying an aspect of either the government of Canada, United States or Mexico. Description of classroom, grade level, and students: The class will consist of 25-30 6th graders who are at grade level. Typical classroom with smart board, desks, and maps. Student Objectives for the lesson. (Given a condition, the students will, to what level). Given a handout with the guidelines and an iPad, students will create a video in groups of 4-6 showing an interesting aspect of their chosen government that lasts at least 4 minutes. Length of Lesson: (minutes, number of class periods, or days or weeks needed). 3 class periods at 45 minutes each Schedule of Activities: (Break down your activity into a timeline of events. Focus on what students will be doing and what teachers will be doing during each part of the activity.) Ist day: Explanation and plan 10 minutes- review basic aspects of the governments 20 minutes- explanation of project, show example and formation of groups 15 minutes- give groups time to come up with their idea teacher will walk around room to help 2nd day: Creation of video 45 minutes- give them time to create their video teacher will be around to answer any questions 3rd day: Edit and Present 15 minutes- give students time to edit their video (teacher will help) 30 minutes- watch the videos that the groups created

Content Standard 4: The student will analyze the human systems of the Western Hemisphere in the context of the worlds peoples and cultures. 3. Describe the major political systems of representative governments (democracy, republic, constitutional monarchy) and authoritarian systems (dictatorship) including the role of the citizen in the selection of government officials, lawmaking, and the liberties guaranteed under different forms of government.

Assessments: How will these activities be assessed? (Go back to your objectives, what will the students do? Make sure that each objective is paired to an assessment measure that allows students to show it). Students will be assessed on their creation of a 4 minute video and whether they were able to follow the guidelines accurately. Accommodations: How might the lesson need to be adapted for students with special needs? I will make a larger print hangout for a student with visual impairment. App to be used for lesson (if applicable): iMovie Materials Needed: Go through each activity and identify what items (both technology and not) are needed to complete this lesson. Include a breakdown according to individual student or student groups. Include materials that need to be created as well. 1. iPads 2. Handout to explain use of iMovie and guidelines for project 3. A handout showing the basic outline of the 3 countries
