GSM BASED AUTOMATIC BILLING SYSTEM

Date: 4 March 2013

BS (COMPUTER ENGINEERING) FYP PROPOSAL BATCH 2010

GROUP LEADER ABID RIZWAN ALI KHAN (2010-CE-306) QAIM SHAFI (2010-CE-319)

1. Motivation
The motivation behind designing a digital wireless energy meter was that it involved the study of many of the core subjects just like electronics, mobile networking, microprocessor, electric circuit analysis, basic electrical engineering and most of all computer language C .Combination of all makes it a good project. Another reason of designing this project was its practical application in daily life as well as in commercial field..

2.Overview
Most domestic electricity meters must be read manually, therefore supply company needs to send a meter reader monthly to read the meter reading and supplied to the company. The problem is that it need a human meter reader, it require a lot of time and men power. To overcome the problem we are making gsm based wireless meter which does not require any human to check it manually but it works on gsm wirelessly through mobile.

2.1 Significance of project

Nowadays, the communication becomes very simple, fast , interactive and more compact. That makes the world as a global village. So it is very easy for anyone to subscribe in the local or global telecommunication networks with individual mobile phone device. Mobile devices, such as mobile phones are becoming multipurpose devices. These devices are capable of storing data as well as running custom application. The importance of this project is that in our country electricity theft is a common phenomena.. tempering and reversing of a meter reader is common in our country. To overcome that problem we decided to make a project which will help electricity providers to overcome this crisis or problem. Through our project the problem is solved by the introduction of digital energy meter. In this energy meter. It is impossible to reverse the reading manually. Even if someone tempers with the energy meter, LCD connected to the circuit, displays the actual meter reading on the power consumption, so power stealing is prevented. It can be practically implemented by the power supplying companies to overcome the loss of electricity.

2.2 Description of project

Most domestic electricity meters must be read manually, by a representative of the power company . When the meter reader reads the meter; the reading is supplied to the power company. The electricity company will normally require sending a representative at least monthly in order to check the meter-readings. The problem that there is need of human meter reader. He will have to visit the meter to check and note the reading. Then he will have to return and save the reading for billing purpose. So it will consume a lot of time. Another drawback that rises in household energy meter is the problem of stealing power by the customers. Often it is noticed that the customers reverse their meter reading by tempering the meter after utilizing a big amount of power. When the meter reader comes to check the meter reading, then he gets wrong reading and hence a good amount of power is stolen. The first problem that human meter reader is needed solved by wireless energy meter. The reading data is transmitted from the transmitter to the receiver through a wireless link so there is no need of human meter reader and it will save man-power as well as time. The second problem is solved by the introduction of digital energy meter. In this energy meter, it is impossible to reverse the reading manually. Even if someone tempers with the energy meter, LCD, connected to the circuit, displays the actual meter reading depending on the power consumption, so power stealing is prevented.

2.3 Background of project

The new age of technology has redefined communication. Most people nowadays have access to mobile phones and thus the world indeed has become global village. At any given moment, any particular individual can be contacted with the mobile phone. But the application of mobile phone cannot just be restricted to sending SMS or starting conversations. New innovations and ides can be generated from it that can further enhance its capabilities. Technologies such as Infra-red Bluetooth etc which has developed in recent years goes to show the very fact that improvement are in fact possible and these improvements have eased our life and the way we live. So, we choose gsm technology because of its availability and easiness in the society.

3. Methodology
Our methodology is set according to the below phases so that in the end we can achieve our goal easily.

3.1 Design phase

This phase is expected in first 2 months. The execution of the design phase will begin by establishing the specifications and the criterion that the system will need to meet. These will translate into the specification and the criterion of the equipment required. A comprehensive bill of materials will be compiled along with expected costs that will be incurred. Materials and equipment will be identified along with their suppliers.

3.2 Implementation phase

This phase is expected to last 4 months. As with the design, we would intend to tackle the mechanical assembly on a priority basis. Firstly, the system will be developed with all ancillary hardware, working stand-alone and in their own right. Small test setup will confirm these. The software application will be developed independently from the hardware. Both will be brought together at the end. The implementation phase will also continue the effort of documentation.

3.3 Testing phase

This phase is expected to last 1 month. As with the design and implementation, we intend to tackle the mechanical assembly on a priority basis. Testing is going to require modification to existing project. Since a certain amount of back-and-forth work is going to be required, testing has been budgeted a large chunk of time. Please refer to the methodology section for the details of the testing process. The testing phase will also end the continued effort of documentation that will have continued through out the project.
