Title of Unit: 1st Grade Civics Title of Lesson: Classroom Rules Submitted By: Jamie Holst

A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This social studies lesson is designed for 1st grade students to learn about the importance of classroom rules. This lesson uses the Respect worksheet from Education worlds website. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 1st Skill Level: on level Grouping: Whole group for respect worksheet and review. Pairs for brainstorming class room rules. Small groups for creating and sharing their Rules of Respect poster with class. C. Materials: Respect worksheet Pencils Poster board Markers

D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o C13.1.1 Identify and follow classroom and school rules that guide behavior and resolve conflicts. C13.1.3 Participate in class decision-making, i.e., individual responsibilities in the classroom and school.

Student-Friendly Standards I can follow classroom and school rules. I can participate in class decision-making.

E. Procedure: 1. Teacher will hand out respect worksheet and review what respect means. Teacher will give examples on how respect is shown and then have the students fill out the form giving an example of when they have seen another classmate show respect. 2. Teacher will draw a T-chart on the board and students will brainstorm examples of what respect is and is not. Teacher will write them on board for students. 3. Teacher will then show how important rules are. Providing examples: listening when someone speaks, following directions, etc. 4. Students will brainstorms with partners ideas for classroom rules.

5. Teacher will provide each table with a poster board and ask groups to create a Rule of Respect poster. Students will each draw or write something to represent their view of respect and how rules are used to help create respect in the classroom. 6. Teacher will hang these posters around the room. F. CLOSURE: Each group will share their poster with the class. G. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Teacher will use the poster sharing as a measure of student understanding. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will be able to determine students met the objective of the lesson based on observations I will make throughout the lesson as well as the completed respect worksheets. Students will need to work together by following classroom and school rules discussed the day before. Students also need to show that they understand how to make decisions by completing their poster as a group.
