Title of Unit: 3rd Grade Geography Title of Lesson: Learning the names of the state capitals Submitted By:

A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson requires time in the computer lab. Students will continue to research their given state, but this time taking note of the different terrains (mountains, valleys, etc.) and where different cities are located. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 3 Skill Level: on level Grouping: Whole group for procedure steps 1-4. Individual practice completing the state map for step 5. C. Materials: pencils Crayons, colored pencils, markers Computers Computer lab Cut out of each state Elmo D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards G5.3.5 Construct a simple map including a title, symbols, and directions from a birds eye view. Student-Friendly Standards G5.3.2 I can create a map showing different characteristics about my state.

E. Procedure: 1. To review capitals from the previous day, students will take out their lyrics paper and sing the 50 State Capitals Song. 2. Explain that each state is different-some have a handful of mountains, some have a lot of trees, while others are made of mainly valleys or plains. 3. Using the Elmo and a print out of Nevada, TW demonstrate how to label where different cities are and how to show where mountains, forests and valleys are located. 4. While in computer lab, students should research information on where cities, forests and valleys are located in their assigned states. 5. Students will work on the state, labeling and drawing individually.

6. CLOSURE: Students will show their shoulder partner their state maps and explain one or two of the characteristics on their map. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? The finished state map will be used to show the student understands, as they will need to have the different components labeled. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. Since the students will need to label the mountains, forests and valleys in the state map, it will be apparent almost immediately if the student understood the concepts. 1.
