METHOD STATEMENT
FOR LAUNCHING OF PRE CAST CONCRETE GIRDERS ON OVERHEAD BRIDGE ON EMPRESS BUND AT N-5 (NORTHERN BYPASS) DISTRICT BAHAWALPUR .
This methodology is meant for mechanically launching of precast concrete girders spanning 100 long, for completion of a very important concrete bridge on the Northern Bypass over National Highway N-5 in district Bahawalpur. SEQUENCE OF OPERATION : Prior to undertake the task of launching of 100 precast concrete girders, all preparatory works, like the arrangement of tools & plants, iron/manila rope slings, wooden pads, iron pipes and other necessary accessories will be made. The prescribed seats/recesses designed over the transoms, as the bearing of the girders will be completed far earlier, from the commencement of launching of girders. A spacious site will be got cleared from all types of hindrances, like tree, poles, overhead wires of all kind prior to transportation of girders at site of launching. Precast girder will be transported from precast yard to the site by means of trailer specially designed and made for this purpose. The Girder then shall be placed on the end of the Bridge Girder Launcher to erect the girder at its final location. EQUIPMENT INVOLVED: Apart from the arrangement of the local machinery, the following special equipments will be deployed at site; i. A Bridge Girder Launcher of heavy capacity will be deployed and fixed over the Initial launching span for lifting and placing of a girder of approximately 58 tons and launching the same in correct position over the bridge spans. After finishing installation on the initial grid, the bridge girder launcher will move longitudinally from one pier to next pier ii. Two lifting trolleys move to the end part of the main girder, then lift auxiliary support legs of main girder, the bridge girder launcher begins to move forward. iii. After fixing the front end legs, the front lifting trolley lifts the end of the bottom launching nose to move forwards about half distance of main girder, auxiliary overhead crane under the front launching nose lifts the bottom launching nose to the front span, the longitudinal movement is finished. iv. Two gantry cranes lift one precast girder at the same time.

v. Trolley to move girders on the transporter carrys the precast girder to somewhere below the front lifting trolley of the bridge girder launcher. vi. The front lifting trolley lifts the precast girder to move forwards until the rear lifting trolley can lift the rear part of the precast girder, then they move forwards together. The girder will then put down into designated location. vii. When the bridge girder launcher installs the last girder, it folds up the bottom part of the front leg, and then longitudinally moves forwards. viii. Then disassemble the rear support leg of the bottom launching nose and remove the launching nose, put down the last girder to finish constructing the whole bridge. One crane of the same heavy capacity will be kept stand-by during the operation of launching. The Girder Launcher and the crane would be operated by the expert crew, with sound experience of such tasks. ix. One No trailer, specially designed for transportation of girders from the casting yard to site of spanning, will be arranged. The said trailer will be operated by an operator having adequate skill in transportation of such long girders. TIME INVOLVED: For launching of one girder, it will take normally one hour to complete the operation. For launching at least four girders in a day, four hours time will be required. In this connection, a detailed deliberation will be made with the Local Regulatory Authorities to arrive at a time schedule for an absolute re-routing of general traffic for the required period of time in the appropriate intervals. CLOSURE OF ROAD: During the operation of launching of girders, the passage will remain closed for all kinds of traffic. The traffic will adopt an alternative route, which will be managed by the local civil administration of city. SUPERVISION OF OPERATION: The operation of launching of girders will be supervised by the engineers of Punjab Highway Department Bahawalpur as well as the representative of the contractors M/s Sh. Abdur Razzaq & Co Pvt Ltd Multan. For execution of operation, two competent supervisors with their sound experience of such tasks will remain present all the time of operation. They will be provided skilled and unskilled labor, plant, equipment and the ample mechanical arrangements to overcome any unforeseen and sudden mechanical breakdown of any plant at site.

PRECAUTIONS & SAFETY MEASURES: In order to provide the safety and prevention of damage of all kind, adequate measures during the process of entire operation of launching will be made. All signs, barricades, obstruction and such other conveniences as necessary to protect the workmen and the other site staff from any damage and injury will be arranged. To minimize the risk of any mishap at site to the extent of zero %, during the operation, all possible security arrangements will be made. In this connection, a FIRST AID UNIT equipped with the fast running vehicles will remain ready at all time during the operation, at site.

SECURITY OF LAUNCHED GIRDERS: After the launching, every girder will immediately be secured at its designed bearings and will be provided temporary bracings & stays to prevent displacement caused by movement of any locomotive and other natural causes etc, till casting of diaphragms.
