Spring 2013

As the evenings get lighter and the warmer weather beckons, most of us start to think about being more active. It may be starting to get to grips with the garden, playing a bit of tennis, or simply going out for a walk. It is very good to do more, but sometimes it can be uncomfortable. At the Batheaston, Bradford on Avon and Devizes Chiropractic clinics we have nearly 30 years of experience of dealing with these spring ailments. Usually it is nothing serious, and in most cases with some simple advice, and treatment as necessary, there should be very little reason to interrupt things. There is nothing more frustrating than planning something for the following weekend and then finding that the minute you start to do whatever it is, your back twinges and you have to stop. Rather than soldiering on in the belief that it will go away, it is so much better to understand what is going on and get it sorted out. That means you can get on with things and not risk any long-term injury. All of our clinical team, the Chiropractors, Physiotherapists and Training staff, are very experienced in managing these types of problems and they are all available at this time of the year at relatively short notice. If you want any advice or help just call any of the three clinics on the numbers below. tunate to have been able to have access to some of the best new graduates and I am very confident in the quality of the team that we have built at Dixon Health. Please see the reverse of this newsletter to meet the team and learn what they do. (If you click on their faces or names it will take you to their profile on our website where you can read more about them.) In this issue, Rona Wyatt is discussing Feldenkrais . We have also recently re-vamped our website and we would welcome any feedback so please take a look at it: www.dixon-health.co.uk. We are also now on facebook, twitter and Linkedin so if you are on one of these sites then please feel free to add, like, follow, tweet or link with us! The practices have become integral parts of the communities in Devizes, Batheaston and Bradford on Avon, and we are very proud of the support that we give to the local community and the high quality of care we provide. If you know somebody who is suffering from lower back pain, neck pain or headaches, or is simply feeling below par, then why not suggest that they call us and come in for a chat. We dont charge for that sort of consultation, there is no obligation, and it can be really helpful in building peoples confidence and encouraging them to try an approach that they might previously not have considered. We have very good links with local GP surgeries, and also with the local Consultant community, so if there is a need for further investigation then that can be arranged very easily. It is a safe way to get those simple things sorted out before they become either more serious or chronic. Again if you know someone who might want to take advantage of a free consultation then simply ask him or her to give one of the clinics a call, pop in to see us or send us an email. I hope that we all get a chance to enjoy some warmer and sunnier weather in the weeks to come, and remain fit enough to take advantage of it.

In the practice we work as a team, and where a case may require the specific skills or experience of another member of the team then you will simply be referred on to them. Having personally been involved in the regulation of the profession, and also in the development of standards at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, I am for-

This issue features Rona Wyatt, Feldenkrais Practitioner...

Originally from NZ, I now live in Bradford on Avon where I work as a Feldenkrais practitioner. My first experience of the Feldenkrais Method was in 1998 and I was so taken by it that I went on to re-train; graduating from the 4 year practitioner training in 2002, and also completing a Masters in Educational Psychology in 2003. I subsequently worked in part-time private practice as a Feldenkrais practitioner, and part-time for the Ministry of Education as a Special Education Advisor working with children and young people experiencing severe learning and/or behavioural difficulties. THE FELDENKRAIS METHOD May 6th to May 13th is Feldenkrais Awareness Week. Dr Moshe Feldenkrais D.Sc. (1910-1984) was keenly interested in how individuals sought to express and fulfil their sense of potential and creativity in everyday life. As a result, he developed a unique and practical approach that uses your personal experiences of movement to help you develop your mindfulness and awareness, and to facilitate deep personal learning so you are better able to live the life you aspire to. Movement sequences are used in novel ways to help you identify your habitual patterns of movement, and to discover and experiment with new patterns of movement that then enable you to do the activities you love or want to do with more ease, freedom, and skill. Attention is paid to the interplay between moving, sensing, feeling, thinking, spatial orientation and your organisation as a whole which brings about changes, such as: the release of habitual patterns of tension and stress, improved posture and breathing, greater ease, skill and freedom in doing everyday activities, a deep meditative relaxation and increased vitality and well-being. There are two complementary techniques used: Functional Integration - a 1-1 session using gentle practitioner touch to guide and facilitate new patterns of movement that enable you to do a specific activity more easily. Awareness Through Movement - a group session using verbal instructions to guide you through specific movement sequences that evolve like a physical riddle and help you to learn how to move with more skill, ease and pleasure.
