From the Director

Dear Faculty, Friends, Students, and Members, As you may know, we are planning an exciting renovation of portions of the Art Center in order to create a more engaging, welcoming, and comfortable creative space for our community. I want to thank the many people who have already given generously to make this possible, and encourage everyone else to join in this transformative moment for the Art Center by donating today. Our last renovation project in 1999 included a new gallery and sculpture studio. We are now focusing our attention to other areas. Highlights include creating new painting and jewelry studios, making the front door to the galleries our new main entrance, bringing natural light into the ceramics studio, and developing a digital media program. As with all projects of this scale and scope, the processes of fundraising and construction can be unpredictable. We ask for your understanding about the unavoidable adjustments that may affect our building plans and schedule. Construction will begin on June 4, and is expected to be complete in late October of 2013. While our building is closed for renovations beginning on May 24, we will be providing the high quality offerings you know and love as well as new programs offsite throughout the community. We very much appreciate your interest and involvement in this transformative moment as we create the best possible environment for teaching, learning, and creating. We hope that we can count on your support to make it a reality. To date, we have raised over $1.2 million towards an overall project budget of close to $2 million, through grants and generous donations from community members like you. You can help make this project a reality by making a tax deductible donation to Main Line Art Center. Thank you, in advance, for your understanding, encouragement, and support as we navigate this exciting process and move towards a refreshed and improved creative home. Sincerely, Amie Potsic, Executive Director

Lectures & Enjoying Art Trips

Join us for an informative yet fun panel discussion about enjoying the process of acquiring art and presenting it in your home. Panelists include: Mary Anne Dutt Justice, Exhibition Juror, Eileen Tognini, Curator, Collaborator and Innovator, and Alice Hardenbergh, Interior Designer. Amie Potsic, Executive Director for Main Line Art Center, will moderate the panel, which will be followed by a lively gallery reception featuring a signature cocktail.

Just north of NYC in the sleepy hamlet of Beacon, New York, where a former Nabisco Printing plant stands on the banks of the Hudson River, resides the Dia Beacon. Dia Beacon pioneered the conversion of an industrial complex to a building to house Contemporary Art. The collection contains large scale installations of paintings and sculpture from the 1960's to present. Unlike most collections, each gallery was designed for the presentation of one artists work. Examples of included artists are Joseph Beuys, Donald Judd, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, Agnes Martin, and Richard Serra. Dia Beacon will ignite your senses as well as expand your information on art, artists, and presentation. Next stop is Storm King, an open air museum, which has extended the concept of a sculpture garden. There are scheduled exhibitions, as well as a permanent collection of monumental works by modern masters such as, Alexander Calder, David Smith, and Richard Serra. A private docent will take us on tour. This trip is a must for the contemporary artist. Overnight accommodations and breakfast included at the Hampton Inn.

Drawing & Painting

As we observe the intricacies and beauty found in nature, you will paint them bigger than life size or large format. Inspiration will come from work of masters such as Georgia OKeefe. This manner of working allows for opening up your freedom of expression (color, texture, form, etc) and gives the possibility of making something lush and unusual, transforming it beyond the literal representation. Demos and instruction will focus on the use of pastels and/or waterbased oils. Both mediums provide a great non-toxic alternative to students who are interested in working in a medium that provides vibrant colors, quick drying time, and is easy to use.

Color in painting is composed of three elements: value, hue and intensity. In this class we will break down these elements and examine each individually before using them to create compositions. Discover how color can create space and emotional tone within a painting.

This class will focus on different techniques which will enable you to start painting with confidence and tap into your intuitive process and inspiration more easily. Learn how to gather inspiration for a painting from anything, from observation, pictures or from simply brainstorming on the canvas, creating chaos and then making order out of it. Focus on composition, movement, harmony, busy, and calm, and the use of line independent of color. Demos and individual and group critiques will enhance your knowledge of the process of painting.
