The Micro Toy Company Security will have global security responsibility and Synchronized Toy Company Security will report to Micros Columbus Office. The Micro security team will be flying to Gothenburg, Sweden for a meeting with the Synchronized Toy Company security team. The Micro Toy Company expects production to operate smoothly and without interruption in order to supply the components necessary to produce toys for the coming Christmas season. CULTURE EXERCISE #4, part 1 Micro Toy Company Columbus, Ohio You are the security manager of the Micro Toy Company, with corporate headquarters located in Columbus, Ohio. Your company has just been rated as one of the most aggressive and current leaders in United States toy manufacturing. The company has increase toy orders, which are exceeding current global production capacity. Christmas season production and sales are expected to top sales from the previous five years. The company provides toys to all the leading retail companies in the world. In February the Micro Toy Company purchased the Synchronized Toy Company in Gothenburg, Sweden, to meet the increase in sales. The Micro Toy Company knows the purchase of Synchronized can enhance the production of toys for the coming Christmas season. Micro is very concern how the Synchronized employees will respond to the sudden increase in production. Synchronized will be producing several components that will be used in production of a new toy line to be introduced in the holiday season. This line is expected to be the hot item for the season. Your security team will be flying to Gothenburg, Sweden for a meeting with the Synchronized Toy Company security team. Your executive vice president wants you to establish a security program and philosophy at Synchronized similar to what you have designed for the US operations. He does not want any losses or disruption of production. Micro must have the components to produce toys for the coming Christmas season. Micro underwent a global restructuring 5 years ago when Germany, Brazil, and several Asia locations were consolidated with US operations. You are also in charge of security operations in those countries. Your US security program which reflects Micros culture, operates in the following manner: US Security team is in charge of global security functions and operations. Security is very traditional with guards at gates and on patrol. Access control, close circuit television, and other forms of technology are being phased in. Security is very military and rigid. Rank and order are the buzz words. Security programs are closely aligned with employees and management and establish programs meeting production requirements. This results in high overtime with very little advance notice. The company has an established higherachy with Directors and above having their own executive dining rooms, workout facilities, and other recreational perks. The US security manager is not at the Director level.

Security personnel average 60-hour workweeks and are on call 24 hours, including vacation periods. Security employees are exhausted. There are similar signs of employee fatigue within the company. Security has observed an increase in internal theft. Most manufacturing facilities are operating on three shifts. Security operations is not able to obtain any personnel increases. Personnel are working excessive overtime to accommodate this increase in production. Most employees earn 3 weeks vacation annually but employees take an average of 1- weeks vacation a year with a number of vacation days going back to the company. Many employees are exhausted from working long hours and view another acquisition as something they dont need. The company has undergone a number of cut backs and benefit reductions within the past two years. The person you report to, Vice President Human Resources has been with the company six months and was brought into the company to determine if there is a better way to conduct human resources business. There are some thoughts within Micro that security can be more cost efficient if contracted out. Security guards belong to an international union, but not the same union as Synchronized security guards. US union relations have not been good in the last several years since no new positions have been added and there are outsourcing rumors. The company has established a policy of community work projects and security personnel are expected to participate in these programs. Employees complain they have no family life now and do not need another special program. The company is starting a program of assigning personnel to project teams consisting of persons from different departments. These teams will review ways to cut cost and increases efficiencies. These changes have made the company unpredictable. In fact Micros new CEO has indicated to employees, dont look for predictability in the work place since we must constantly change to meet the needs of the global customer. Because of the leaner meaner company approach, managers are expected to train their next level. Each management/supervisory level in turn is responsible for training those below them. The formal training function has been reduced and outside consultants are not allowed. Each employee is expected to act as an owner of the company. The security trainer is proud of what is has learned from its global experience.
