Successful RISC Nehemiah Action! Grace Covenant Swaying with Joyful Justice!
On Thursday, April 18, Grace Covenant hosted a wonderful gathering of faithful Richmonders committed to seeking God's justice in Richmond at RISC's "Nehemiah Action." RISC (Richmonders Involved to Strengthen our Communities) is a diverse organization of local congregations aimed at doing justice ministry in Richmond. Grace Covenant has been a member congregation of RISC for almost five years now, and, like us, RISC recognizes God's call via the prophet Micah that God requires us "to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8). On April 18, over 600 people poured into our sanctuary for RISC's annual "Nehemiah Action," which is scripturally modeled on Nehemiah, chapter five, when Nehemiah brought together a great assembly of Gods people in order to hold its leaders to account for addressing injustices plaguing the community. Like Nehemiah, RISC focuses on listening for communal concerns, researching means to address them, and then at the Nehemiah Action gathering together a great assembly of Gods people to provide our local leaders with the support, encouragement, and perhaps pressure they need to push forward for justice in our communities. The main focus at this year's Action was affordable housing (RISC is also presently working on issues of unemployment and transportation). Currently about 35% of Richmond households pay over 30% of their income for housing and as a result struggle mightily just to make ends meet. At this year's Action, three City Council members were present, Hon. Ellen Robertson, Hon. Parker Agelasto, and Hon. Chris Hilbert, along with Peter Chapman, representative from Mayor Jones. Each expressed strong support for Richmond's Affordable Housing Trust Fund, and the three council members also made commitments to dedicate a specific stream of revenue to fill this fund. This kind of trust fund leverages money for affordable housing on an impressive scale of six dollars raised to every one dollar in the trust fund. It does so primarily by supporting private development projects that provide for the acquisition, construction, or preservation of affordable housing. It has been a great blessing for many other communities nationwide, and we as part of RISC are striving to bring that blessing to families in our area as well. It was wonderful seeing our pews filled on April 18, with an amazingly diverse, vibrant gathering of God's faithful from across the Greater Richmond Area united in the call to do justice.

Stewardship Corner
Contributions of $68,200 in March were particularly strong, due partially to gifts attributed to last years pledges and also to March having Easter and five Sundays. The total was almost double that of February. For the first quarter of the year contributions were 29% higher than the first quarter of last year, due to the strong showing in March. Expenses last month of $44,500 were fairly routine and included $4,700 in mission contributions. In March income exceeded expenses by $29,700, and for the first quarter, by $19,400. March's Five-Cents-Per-Meal offering was $152 and our Loaves and Fishes offering was $1,340. -Lloyd Bostian, Treasurer Emeritus -Eric Spitzer, Treasurer//305-0139, ericjspitzer@gmail.com

Loaves and Fishes Mission Giving

The Loaves and Fishes Fund supports local families in need and international missions. We completed our annual pledge drive for the fund in March, which was a definite success! We received pledges of $845 per month. Together with the founding donors and other matching pledges, we expect to receive over $19,000 in donations this year. Praise God for your generosity! The Missions Ministry is humbled and honored to be stewards of your gifts, and we are looking forward to seeing what is in store for the coming year. As always, we are looking for local families in crisis situations that we may be able to help. If you know of someone, please contact Matt Hartman, mchartman@vcu.edu, 212-1961.

Farewell Party for Brint!!

Brint's last day in the pulpit will be May 19; please plan to be in worship that day and join us immediately after for a reception to honor and thank Brint for all his hard work at Grace Covenant. Please mark the date on your calendars and join the party on May 19. All are welcome!

Grace Covenant Service Day TBD

The Missions Ministry Team is delighted to announce and invite you to a congregation-wide service day TBD. It will be a time for fellowship, discussion, and activities focused on loving God and loving our neighbors as ourselves. Plans are still being finalized, but the day will likely be on Saturday and begin with lunch and Bible study; continue with an afternoon of service activities (some at the church and some in the community); and conclude with dinner, Bible study, and reflections on the day. This promises to be an excellent time of fellowship and community building. Organizations we hope to partner with that day include CHAT, Shalom Farms, the Better Housing Coalition, and our very own Honduras Mission (likely getting a head start on packing supplies for the next KHISH Mission Trip). Please mark your calendars now, and keep an eye out for further details. Note: this Service Day will in some respects take the place of Vacation Bible School this summer. Since most VBS leaders this year are enjoying the blessings of newborn and infant children (eager participants of future VBSs!), the Missions and Christian Education/Discipleship Ministry Teams have decided this year to focus on this meaningful and more compact day of service.

Super Senior Luncheon

Sunday, April 14, 2013, will be remembered in the annals of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church history as a day of joyful celebration of our SUPER SENIORS who were honored at a beautiful congregational luncheon provided by the Fellowship Committee. Individual gold stars suspended from silk cords were placed around our honorees necks. A delicious roast beef meal was served to more than 100 attendees by a smiling staff of Fellowship volunteers. With Pete Sizemore as our competent emcee, each attendee 80 years young and beyond was recognized individually. As Pete related thoughtful personal remembrances, young Cameron Baird and her mother Katherine moved from table to table holding a large glittering wand-like gold star above each honoree. To hear the countless contributions of time, love, energy, and commitment was an inspiration to all. Because of our Super Seniors, and those who preceded them, our church is deeply blessed to have a foundation built on love for God and each other. Now it is up to all younger generations to maintain this incredible example. God bless each one of our Seniors, and God bless Grace Covenant!

A special thank you to Phil Coltrain for taking photos the day of the event to capture many memories.

Psalm 127:3 Children are an inheritance from the Lord And it looks like we are being blessed abundantly! We celebrate the arrival of our tiniest members.

Parents Cheryl and James Atchison and big sister Elena welcomed Julia on October 24, 2012. Ellery Jane Hartman was born November 22, 2012, to proud parents, Leslie and Matt Hartman. Her big brothers, Callan and Thatcher, love her and are a huge help. Willem Justin Key Meyer was born on April 17, 2013, on his actual due date. Both Megan and Christof Meyer both barely made it to the hospital in time for his debut. Willem has a big sister, Analiese. Baby Eason was due May 15, but made an early appearance and was born April 26, 2013. James Eason Bonney Reveley is Jessica and Nelsons first baby. Drs. Christine Anderson and Karl Rubis are expecting their first child and do not know the sex (it will be a surprise as will their child's name!). Her due date is July 22, 2013. Their child will be a dual citizen of the U.S. and Finland. Although he/she will be born in the U.S., because citizenship is passed through the maternal line in Finland, he/she will be eligible for Finnish citizenship after the birth. Debbie and Mason Pritchett are expecting their first baby, with an estimated due date of October 7, 2013. They are so excited!! They hope to find out whether they will have a boy or a girl in the next 3-4 weeks.

The pastors relationship with the flock is unique, and particularly prone to misunderstanding when a pastor departs. The policy of the Presbytery of the James is similar to that of other presbyteries, in that a departing pastor is asked to suspend interaction with members of the congregation for at least a season following his/her departure. This policy has been augmented recently to reflect the phenomenon of social media (consequently, please do not take offense when I unfriend you on Facebook in a few weeks). This is as it should be, for it frees up space in the hearts and minds of the congregation to welcome the new pastor. Lastly, I am deeply grateful to everyone at Grace Covenant. You welcomed me during a difficult and trying time. You trusted enough to listen. Some of you trusted enough to openly disagree (which requires deeper trust). In the midst of hurt, unknowing, and ministry challenges, you did not give up, but sought to know Gods will for you, and to follow it. You wrestled against the common tendency to have a church, and instead pursued the narrow path to Be The Church. As for myself, I have sought to be faithful to Christ in this, my first interim pastorate. I have sought to preach His Word, to reflect His grace, to witness to His love, and to shepherd you in this interim pasture. I have not always been successful, nor faithful. But I am grateful for your mercy and grace shown to me, and for your abiding faith in the only One Who is ever faithful. Most of all, I am deeply humbled and grateful to have been part of Gods ministry at Grace Covenant, and to help you prepare to walk with a new pastor, one whom I am confident has been called here by God. You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world. Go forth in joy, and in the strength of Christ, to make disciples of all nations, and to awaken a love for Him in Richmond. Grace and peace to you, in Christs name --

Construction Work
If you have been upstairs recently, then you have noticed that the ceiling tiles have been removed throughout the second floor. This is the first of four stages involved in refurbishing our chill water piping for the air conditioning system in the education building. Thanks to Cal Gray, Wayne Casey, Rob Rosebro, Dick Cardwell, and everyone on the Property and Maintenance Ministry for their help in coordinating this project with James River Air. The tentative schedule of work is displayed in the glass office, so I invite you to take a look. However, that schedule is very fluid, so if you plan to make any use of any rooms in the education building between now and the first week of June, please check first with Vanessa in the church office. She has been designated Grace Covenants point of contact for all coordination issues with the builders.

Grace Notes

Brothers and sisters in Christ For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven So writes Qoheleth (The Teacher) in the opening verses of Ecclesiastes, Chapter 3. As this season of ministry comes to an end, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the blessing of walking with you as your interim pastor these last two-and-a-half years. I will resist the temptation to take up space recounting the highlights of this brief journey. Suffice to say that, guided by Gods Holy Spirit, we covenanted to walk together in faith at a time of hurt and confusion, when none of us yet knew what the future held; and that God once again proved faithful to Himself and to His people in leading us forward to this day. Before I take my leave, I would like to thank: Your Ruling Elders for their willingness to shoulder the responsibilities of leadership, including leaning upon the grace of the Holy Spirit to trust one another with their struggles, and to humbly (and sometimes not so humbly) express disagreement with one another. Only by bringing our human weakness and inevitable discord before the Cross of Christ can His Spirit work through them to bring all His disciples into the One Body and One Mind that we are called both to seek and to display. Your Deacons not only for their hearts of compassion and service, but also for their patience and commitment during a prolonged season of seeking Gods direction for this essential ministry. They are to be commended for their persistence, their flexibility, and their continuing dedication to Christs call to serve others. Your Care Team though technically a ministry of the Deacons, its membership has included others as well. They met with me for two hours every week to discuss, to pray for, and to coordinate visitation for those in our congregation who were sick, in the hospital, grieving, in distress, and absent from our fellowship. Your Presbyterian Women (PW) Descended from faithful women excluded from church leadership over 200 years ago, the PW here at Grace Covenant has a strong and impressive history of prayer, scripture study, mission, and service as an independent womens fellowship. They have now begun a season of discernment to determine how God would have them continue in a culture that is much closer to the scriptural ideal of no longer male nor female in Christ (albeit with still a ways to go). Their faithfulness in this endeavor is an inspiration, and I am grateful for their courage to move forward into future that is yet unknown to them, trusting that Gods Spirit will bless their faithful seeking. Your Mission Study Team Though it now seems a distant memory, this group also met weekly (and then some) for six months to labor in prayer, research, scripture study, questioning, and frequent conversation with the congregation to discern Grace Covenants way forward as Gods people in Richmond. This ministry is critical to a
12

congregations interim period, and their faithful efforts have borne fruit in our focus and direction, in the Church Information Form (CIF), and ultimately in the calling of Bobby as your next installed pastor. Your Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) Grace Covenant has had a little more experience with this ministry over the past few years than most congregations. Many of you have an idea about the demands of this ministry upon ones time, ones energy, and ones faith. Yet I hope that you also are aware of the fulsome blessings that the Spirit bestows upon those who seek earnestly in prayer, in fellowship, in scripture study, and in discussion to discern together the mind of God, and particularly with respect to pastoral leadership. Like the PNCs before it, this committee worked diligently and faithfully in the ministry assigned to it. In accordance with my terms of call, the PNC sought my advice in drafting the CIF, and then kept its own counsel during the search process. The mark of the Spirits leading is apparent in the unity of mind and spirit shared by a committee membership diverse in age, backgrounds, perspectives, and concerns. I am deeply grateful for their ministry, and for the freedom to leave Grace Covenant confidently testifying that they have called the man whom God has prepared for this next chapter. Your staff While congregations regularly see their pastor in worship, at meetings, and at church events, few people have reason to think much about the pastors ministry as head of the churchs paid staff (this includes seminaries, which almost universally lack instruction on personnel management). Yet the staff often work more, and more closely, with the pastor than any member of the congregation. They have to deal with his personality quirks and his work habits, all the while trying to perform a job under the oversight of a boss who is not their pastor, but who is a pastor. Chris, Vanessa, Martha, Willie, Pat, and James all spent enough time with me to see some of my warts, and I, likewise, with them. I truly believe that the day-in, day-out, mundane particulars of sharing office space and responsibilities are where ones walk as a disciple of Christ are most unrelentingly put to the test. We have experienced disagreement as well as encouragement, conflict as well as fellowship. Those on the second floor have suffered my work habits (particularly my ineptitude with paperwork, detail, and punctuality) with much more indulgence than they would likely extend to one another. At the same time, I have been blessed by their dedication, their commitment to Grace Covenant, and their faith. As anyone who has served on a church staff will tell you, it takes a special person to be able to take direction from every member who has an interest in your ministry. I count it a joy and a blessing to have worked with all these people, and am grateful to have shared my ministry here with them. Grace Covenant is truly blessed by their ministry.
