This document contains supplemental information for installing and configuring the Datalogic PD8330 PowerScan Barcode Reader as a USB device for use with Telesis marking systems. This supplement is to be used in conjunction with the PowerScan Users Guide.

Installation & Configuration

INTRODUCTION
Barcode readers purchased with Telesis Marking Systems are typically configured at Telesis prior to shipping to our customers. However, if you purchase a barcode reader as an add-on, or after-order item, the reader may not be properly configured to communicate with the marking system software. This supplement contains the information youll need to connect and configure your PowerScan barcode reader. It does not, however, attempt to address the complete operating instructions for the reader. For those details, please refer to the PowerScan Users Guide that is provided with the reader. The installation and configuration process requires the following steps:

Download the bar code reader USB driver Extract the driver file(s) Configure the reader View the reader COM port assignment Configure Merlin serial communication parameters

DOWNLOAD THE BAR CODE READER USB DRIVER

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Open your web browser and go to www.adc.datalogic.com. From the main menu, select Products, then browse under Industrial Handhelds to find model PD8300. Click on the Downloads tab. Scroll down to Utilities. Select the appropriate USB-COM Driver (32-bit or 64-bit) for your marking system computers operating system. Download (save) the compressed driver file to the system computer that runs the Merlin software.

EXTRACT THE DRIVER FILES

1. 2. 3. 4. Extract (unzip) the downloaded driver file. Double-click the extracted file and following the Installation Wizard instructions to install the driver. Choose the directory where you want to store the driver files (or use a default folder C:\WINDOWS\TEMP). Close the Installation Wizard and close the file-extraction program.

CONFIGURE THE READER
1. 2. 3. 4. Connect the bar code reader to the USB port on the system computer. Note: Windows will recognize the new hardware and prompt you to identify the driver location. Select the directory where you stored the extracted driver files (e.g., C:\windows\temp\drivercom). Complete the installation by as directed by the on-screen instructions. After the reader is installed, scan the following codes to configure the reader. Note: Refer to the PowerScan Quick Reference Guide for bar codes and additional information.

RESTORE DEFAULT Interface Selection: USB-COM Keyboard Nationality (as applicable) Aiming System: ENABLE or DISABLE (as applicable) Data Format Terminator: CR-LF, ENTER, TAB, or NONE (as applicable)

After the reader is configured, scan the OPERATING TEST bar code to verify proper configuration and operation.

VIEW THE READER COM PORT ASSIGNMENT

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. On the Windows Desktop, right-click on the My Computer icon.

From the pop-up window, select Properties. Click on the Hardware tab. Click on the Device Manager button. From the list of devices, locate the Ports (COM & LPT) category. Click the + sign to expand the list. Note the Port assignment for the Datalogic reader. (e.g., COM3)

Close the Device Manager and System Hardware windows.

CONFIGURE MERLIN SERIAL COMMUNICATION PARAMETERS

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. On the system computer, start the Merlin Place the system in Supervisor mode. From the main menu choose Setup, then choose Serial Tool. Set the Port Number parameter to the port number assigned in the Device Manager, above (e.g. COM3). Use the default settings for the remaining parameters (19200, None, 8, 1, and Station ID 0). Click OK to save the port parameters for the Serial Commands Tool.
