Basler Electric Rotating Exciter Diode Replacement Modules

Typical Questions and Answers

Q: What is the best delivery time? A. We need a sample diode module for all applications to determine the proper replacement module and to prepare a formal quote. If we havent manufactured a module that duplicates the original, we can provide a prototype for review in four (4) weeks after receiving a sample module from the customer. . After approval of the prototype module, we can deliver as many modules as required in an additional four (4) weeks. If a design already exists, we can provide as many modules as required in four (4) weeks.

Q: Can only a few modules be replaced during an outage or must all modules be replaced at one time? In other words, can the Basler modules be mixed with functional existing OEM modules?

A: All diodes in a single phase of the three phase armature winding must be replaced with new Basler replacement modules. If the failed diode modules are in multiple phases, then all of the modules in a defective phase must be replaced. A sample module is required to match the weight of the replacement diode to insure all replacement Basler diodes in that phase are matched electrically and mechanically.

Q: What is the purpose of the endplates on the sample module with the hockey puck diodes?

A: The original sample unit supplied for our examination had the endplates on them. The purpose for the original endplate was to cover the epoxy filled capacitor cavity behind it. To keep the new design as close as possible to the original, the endplates were retained in the design of the new replacement module. The endplates provide beneficial electrical insulation between the module base and other components in the brushless exciter.

Q: What is the material composition of the spacers for the hardware that compresses the hockey puck diode heat sinks?

A: The material is G-10, same as the material used in the original Westinghouse module.

Page 2 Q: Are the capacitors in the hockey puck design replaceable even though they are enclosed in potting material? A: Yes, the capacitors are replaceable, but not in the field. Basler Electric must replace the capacitors at the factory to meet the tight weight tolerances required to minimize balancing problems at the postoutage startup.

Q: With the hockey puck design, is the connection post in the center of the module silver plated, plated with some other material, or is it manufactured from a different metal than what that used for the module base? Q: How do you make sure that hardware doesnt vibrate loose in operation?

A: The connection post is tin plated aluminum. The base is not plated at all at the request of the original customer for which the new product was designed.

A: On production diode modules, lock washers and Loctite are used on all hardware. Note: Sample units used for demonstration purposes are made for easy disassembly.

Q. Can Basler Electric exactly match the weight of the original module?

A. Yes, with a sample provided, Basler Electric can duplicate the weight of the original sample, within a tolerance of 0.03%.

Q: How do you avoid problems with patent rights/ infringement?

A: The patents for the OEM designs have expired. Therefore, anybody is free to reverse engineer the original module designs.

Q. Who can I call for more information?

A. Contact the Basler factory at 618-654-2341 or send an email to info@basler.com.
