A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This social studies lesson is designed for 1st grade students to lean the definition of weather and seasons and how weather affects peoples lives. This lesson uses the 1st grade Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook School and Family (p. 96-99). B. Target Population: Grade Level: 1st grade Skill Level: students at all learning levels Grouping: whole group reading and discussion, independent for activity and assessment. C. Materials: Houghton Mifflin 1st Grade Social Studies Book: School and Family (p. 96-99) Vocabulary & Study Guide (Unit Resource p. 27) for each student example on last page of lesson plan Blank paper and colored pencils, crayons and markers D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards G8.1.1 Tell how the physical environment affects activity at school, i.e., inside/outside recess. Student-Friendly Standards I can name the four seasons and at least two types of weather that affects recess.

E. Procedure: 1. Refer to notes on TE p. 96 Get Set to Read Explain the Study Guide students will complete as we read Guide students to fill in a class graph organizer showing how changing seasons cause changes in temperature and the amount of water in the air, which affects what people wear. Introduce vocabulary (weather, season)

2. As a class, read p. 96-99, stopping to ask questions as indicated in the margins of the TE. 3. Students should take notes and record information on their Study Guide while we are reading. 4. Ask questions listed in the margins of the TE as an ongoing check for understanding.

5. CLOSURE: Discuss the two questions in the Review & Assess section of TE p. 99 F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Make a picture book about the four seasons of themselves doing a seasonal activity or wearing seasonal clothing. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will assess the students understanding of seasons using the Performance Task Rubric in margin of TE p. 99. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the easiest part of this lesson to teach will be how weather affects our outside activities. They are keenly aware that when it rains, we have indoor recess. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think the most challenging part of this lesson to teach is defining the terms weather and season. Las Vegas seasons have very slight changes in weather and out little people might be unfamiliar with snow, sleet, hail, etc 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? As an extension to the lesson, I would use Extend Lesson 4 about predicting weather. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who are struggling with understanding the concepts of this lesson, I would use the Reteach Minilesson found on the bottom of TE p. 99. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? As with almost all these textbook lessons, hands-on activities are lacking. I would include a sorting activity for independent use. This activity would include photographs of different types of weather and the student would sort the photos under the appropriate season headings. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part about writing any lesson is the assessment. They need to authentic and creative while actually assessing the students knowledge.
