When is followed by alif it has a special form when separate and when
joined to a letter preceding it. This unique form is sometimes taught as a separate
letter called laam-alif.
The separate form is made by two downward strokes. The first begins
vertically, curves to the left at midway and ends at the line. The second starts
from the left slanting to the right until it reaches the line, then it extends along the
line to the left to meet the end of the first stroke.

Hamzah is not a letter of the alphabet but a sign indicating a consonant sound
known in English as a glottal stop. It is produced by blocking off the air flow at
the top of the windpipe, and then releasing it.1
Hamzah is sometimes written over or under certain letters, called seats, or
else it is written independently. At the beginning of a word, it is always written
with alif as its seat, either above the alif when the vowel is fat-hah or dammah (
e.g. , ) or under the alif when the vowel is kasrah ( e.g. . ). In the
middle and at the end of words, hamzah may be written independently, or on an
alif, a waaw or a yaa ( without the dots, e.g. not ) .2

This happens when a deep breath is taken, held and then released.
When it follows a sukoon or a long vowel at the end of a word, it is written independently ( e.g.
) . Otherwise it is written on the seat corresponding to the vowel preceding
it. Alif for fat-hah, yaa for kasrah and waaw for dammah ( ). In the middle of a
word, it is written independently when preceded by a waaw or between two alifs (
) or on one of the seats, according to the vowels on the hamzah and the letter preceding
it, following the order of priority: i - u - a- sukoon (e.g. . ).

Although the pronunciation changes, the spelling of the word does not
change. The alif is retained in all cases. This type of hamzah is called hamzatulwasli ( elidable hamzah ).

15
Hamzatul-wasli is also found in all imperative verbs beginning with alif, e.g.
( udrus : study ), all perfect tense verbs beginning with hamzah, e.g.
( ishtaraka : share ), all verbal nouns from verbs with two or more
additional letters, e.g. ( ikhtilaaf : difference ), and with the definite
article

TANWEEN ( NUNATION )
http://www.islamiconlineuniversity.com
17
Most Arabic nouns and adjectives indicate their indefiniteness by the addition
of a noon to their last vowel. The additional noon is represented in writing by a
doubling of the final vowel. This doubling is called in Arabic tanween (lit.
adding a noon ) and in English nunation.

The an ending is usually followed by an alif written as the last letter of the
word. This alif is a spelling convention used only with the an ending. In
unvowelled texts the nunation signs are omitted along with the short vowels.
However, the alif which accompanies the an ending remains. When a word is
paused upon during reading, the last vowel of this word is dropped along with its
nunation and replaced by a sukoon, except in the case of the an ending
accompanied by an alif. In this case, the last vowel is read as a long vowel aa.
