Title of Unit: Geography and Environment Title of Lesson: Learning All About Maps Sansevero Submitted By: Breeze

A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This social studies lesson is designed for 2nd grade students to learn about maps and the globe. This lesson uses a world globe and map of the community. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 2nd grade Skill Level: Students of all learning levels Grouping: whole group and partners C. Materials: Venn Diagram Activity with Modifications Globe Map Pencil (hula hoops or strings) D. Objectives: NV State Social Studies Standards G5.2.1 Identify titles and symbols on maps. G5.2.2 Recognize spatial patterns, i.e., political units, physical features, on a map and globe. G.5.2.3 Construct a map key from given symbols and choose a map title.

Student-Friendly Standards I can name symbols on maps. I can pick out specific features on a map and globe. I can create a map key and name a map.

E. Procedure: 1. Show the students a globe and a map. Make a class list about things they already know about globes and maps. 2. Display a Venn diagram (could use hula hoops or string). Label one side Maps and the other Globes. Have students list similarities and differences between globes and maps and write these on the diagram in the appropriate places. 3. Find the compass rose on the map and the globe; discuss what it means. Discuss the idea of direction.

4. With a partner the students will create a map of the classroom including a map key (legend), symbols, compass rose (directions), and labels. CLOSURE: Partners will take turns telling each other one thing that they learned about maps or globes. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Teacher will evaluate the maps created by the students for accuracy. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will know that students understand if the maps are correct. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think this lesson is straight forward and that students will easily grasp concept. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I dont feel this lesson would be difficult to teach. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I am not sure that I would use an extension with this lesson. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? I would use the Modifications worksheet as needed for students who need scaffolding with this task. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I do feel that I will find the glitches after I attempt to teach this lesson for the first time. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? Gathering all the information and getting the Venn diagrams set up were the most difficult part of this lesson.
