One month left to have your say on the draft Auckland Unitary Plan
Mayor Len Brown will be attending the Birkdale and Beach Haven Residents and Ratepayers Association meeting on 13 May to discuss local issues and the draft Auckland Unitary Plan. Its a great opportunity to find out what the plan could mean for the area. When: 13 May 2013, 7.30pm Where: Beach Haven Hall, 336 Rangatira Road, Beach Haven We have had worthwhile and productive discussions at our community meetings focusing on the different aspects of the draft Auckland Unitary Plan. Kaiptikis consultation camper is still out in the community to help locals find out more so they can provide their feedback to help shape the plan. You also have the chance to find out more with the consultation campervan this month. Glenfield Market 12 and 26 May, 5pm Birkenhead Artisan Market 18 May, 8am-1pm

There have been many discussions about what the unitary plan will mean for our communities. We are getting lots of feedback around many issues, including housing density, the environment and infrastructure to support Aucklands growth. Feedback for the draft plan closes on Friday 31 May 2013 and we encourage you to visit www.shapeauckland.co.nz to find out what it means for your community and have your say.

Onepoto Pond to be de-silted

Onepoto Pond at Onepoto Domain will be de-silted next year. Kaiptiki Local Board, with support from Auckland Councils Governing Body, has secured funding to restore the pond. Local residents have asked for the pond to be de-silted for a number of years and the local board is pleased to have advocated successfully for the work to be progressed. The project is currently in a design phase, and more details about the work will be available later this year.

Big finish in Shore to Shore race

Kaiptiki Local Board would like to congratulate Birkenhead local Jayden Burrell for his achievement in the Shore to Shore Fun Run in March. Jaden has an extremely rare genetic disorder that makes even simple tasks painful and difficult. Doctors initially did not expect him to be able to walk, but the 21 year old has overcome many obstacles to complete the fun run in one hour and four minutes 56 minutes ahead of his original goal. Congratulations, Jayden, your story is inspiring!

Kaiptikis youth panel gets to work

The Kaiptiki Local Youth Board will be representing the areas young people and feeding into the local boards discussions and decision-making. The youth members will provide young peoples perspectives and advocate on behalf of Kaiptikis younger residents. Local board Chairperson Lindsay Waugh is looking forward to working with the youth board. One of the first things wed like to work with them on is getting their views on the draft Regional Public Transport Plan, as the mapping of bus routes has a direct bearing on how young people get around Auckland.

Kaiptiki Community Policing Project wins national award

A police and community project to reduce crime around Beach Haven has won the inaugural National ProblemOriented Policing Award. For two years, the police team has worked in partnership with community leaders to focus on targeted crime reduction and enhancing strong networks between residents and community groups. During the first year, the new approach resulted in a 45 per cent drop in burglaries which has been sustained over the last year. Police, Auckland Council and our community partners worked together on a number of levels. Kaiptiki Local Board funded a playground upgrade in one street, after a neighbourhood street group which formed out of the project, made a submission. Kaiptiki Local Board wants to congratulate the community and police for their joint efforts in fostering stronger communities that have made Kaiptiki a safer place to live. The project will now go forward to an international judging panel, and could be selected to compete in the international Goldstein Awards for problem-oriented policing in October.

Ferry numbers on the up

Beach Haven and Hobsonvilles ferry services are performing ahead of expectations and the long summer saw more Aucklanders taking to the water and using the citys ferry services. In March the number of people using the ferries was up nine per cent to 555,143 across all routes. Kaiptiki Local Board is always keen to get feedback on the new Beach Haven service and timetabling. Stand to represent your community

Do you have what it takes to lead Auckland into the future? Do you want to make a difference in your local community? If so, you may want to stand in the 2013 local government elections in October, which will see Aucklanders voting for their preferred local board members, councillors and mayor. Starting in May, a series of information evenings across Auckland will help prospective candidates find out more about the elected representative roles and the election process, before candidate nominations open in mid-July.
