Real World Quadratics Application Project

Objective: To select and solve a real world problem that involves using the material we learned in our Quadratics Unit. Due Date: Monday (4/21). We will spend all of class Friday (4/12) as well as Monday (4/15) working on this project in class. If you use your time efficiently, you should not need to do much, if anything, outside of class for this project. Grading: One mini-quiz grade out of 15 points following the rubric below. The Glog part will be graded as a team grade and the peer feedback will be individually assessed. Lets get started! 1. Take a look at this example of what I am looking for: https://kmalg1.wikispaces.com/home One person in your group needs to sign up for a Glogster Student account and share this login information with their partner and me (in case of absence). a. http://edu.glogster.com/register?edu_type=student b. Educator Code: 67BA6C With your partner, brainstorm different real world places you have seen the parabolic shape. If you are stuck, try to think about the word problems weve seen this unit as a starting place. Do a little online research about places or attractions in the real world. Once you have settled on a real world problem, please clear your topic with me so we avoid duplicates. Click on Create New Glog you may use any of the templates available in Glogster. With your partner, you need to create a glog with the following essential components: a. A brief description of your real world problem. b. A written explanation of the steps you took to solve your problem, including any key pieces of information you researched and used. c. Several pictures that pertain to your problem, including a hand-drawn sketch of the setup of your problem (can be created in oneNote and then snipped using the snipping tool). d. A screencast of your group explaining how you solved your real world problem. When finished with your glog (or at the end of class) make sure to Save your glog by choosing Save. Give your glog a name (Both of your Last Names and the Word Quadratics: MorrisonQuadratics). Use the unfinished option until you are sure you are finished since it submits to us when you select finished.

To modify a glog template, youll double click anywhere you want to edit and an editing control panel is brought to the foreground.

To add an image from a link (google images, etc): 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Double click and select image Click on link Paste the link Click on Add to My Files Select image from visual list You can Add a Frame Click Use it. Resize as needed.

To add a saved image from your computer: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Double click and select image Click on upload Browse to the file Click Open Select file from visual list Add a Frame Click Use it. Resize as needed.

To add a video from a link (youTube): 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Double click and select video Click on link Paste the link Click on Add to My Files Select the uploaded video Add a Frame if youd like Click Use it. Resize as needed.

To add text: 1. 2. 3. 4. Double click and choose Text Choose your favorite type Choose Use it Double click to edit the text

Screencasting is a process during which you can record what is on your screen and you talking over it. As a part of this project, we are asking you and your partner to create a screencast explaining how you solved your problem. First, plan out what you plan to say a bit. You may do a run-through a few times. Go to http://screencast-o-matic.com/ Click on Start Recording o If you have trouble with your java, you may need to try a different browser. Permit Java to run if you get any popups. Frame in the space in oneNote you want to record. Press Alt-P (this toggles between recording and paused if you want to pause at any time) Record When finished, click on Done Preview your screencast If satisfied, choose Publish to YouTube o In order to upload your screencast to YouTube, one of your partners needs a YouTube account. If neither you nor your partner have already signed up for a YouTube account, please sign up for one. You may alternatively save it to your harddrive and add it into your glog by uploading it. Wait for the screencast to upload (it may take a few minutes) Select the link and make sure it uploaded correctly (may take a few minutes to be available on youTube). Use the directions above to add the video to your Glog via pasting the link.
